Abstract

We propose a fast and efficient technique to create classes of highly entangled states of trapped ions, such as arbitrary Dicke states and superpositions of them, e.g. NOON states. The ions are initialized in the phonon ground state and are addressed globally with a composite pulse that is resonant with the first motional sideband. The technique is fairly robust to parameter fluctuations and operates on comparatively short time scales, as resonant interactions allow one to use the minimum laser pulse area. The number of single pulses from the composite sequence is equal to the number of ions; thus the implementation complexity grows only linearly with the size of the system. The approach does not require individual addressing of the ions in the trap and can be applied both inside and outside the Lamb–Dicke regime.

Simplified scalable construction of highly-conditional quantum gates

Svetoslav S. Ivanov, Nikolay V. Vitanov

We present a scalable uniform technique for construction of highly conditional C$^n$-NOT quantum gates of trapped ion qubits, such as the Toffoli gate, without using ancilla states and circuits of an exorbitant number of concatenated one- and two-qubit gates. Apart from the initial dressing of the internal qubit states with vibrational phonons and the final restoration of the phonon ground state, our technique requires the application of just a single composite pulse on the target qubit and is applicable both in and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime. We design special narrowband composite pulses, which suppress all transitions but the conditional transition of the target qubit; moreover, these composite pulses significantly improve the spatial addressing selectivity.

Fast multi-qubit global-entangling gates without individual addressing of trapped ions

Kaizhao Wang, Jing-Fan Yu, Pengfei Wang +3 more

Abstract We propose and study ways speeding up of the entangling operations in the trapped ions system with high fidelity. First, we find a scheme to increase the speed of a two-qubit gate without the limitation of trap frequency, which was considered as the fundamental limit. Second, we study the fast gate scheme for entangling more than two qubits simultaneously. We apply the method of applying multiple frequency components on laser beams for the gate operations. In particular, in order to avoid infinite terms from the coupling to carrier transition, we focus on the phase-insensitive gate scheme here. We carefully study the effect of large excitation of motional mode beyond the limit of Lamb–Dicke approximation by including up to second order terms of the Lamb–Dicke parameter. We study the speed limit of multi-qubit global entangling gates without individual addressing requirements. Furthermore, our gates can be made insensitive to the fluctuation of initial motional phases which are difficult to stabilise in the phase-insensitive gate scheme.

Robust creation of arbitrary-sized Dicke states of trapped ions by global addressing

I. E. Linington, Nikolay V. Vitanov

We propose a technique for the creation of maximally entangled symmetric Dicke states in an ion trap using adiabatic passage, which requires only a pair of chirped pulses from a single laser and is applicable to any number of ions and excitations. By utilizing a particular factorization of the Hilbert space for multilevel ladders we show that the problem can be reduced to ``bow-tie''-configuration energy-level crossings. This technique is naturally robust against fluctuations in the laser intensity and the chirp rate. Even when realistic heating rates are considered, we estimate that the overall fidelity should remain high (e.g., 98% for a ten-ion Dicke state), which represents a significant improvement over traditional approaches.

A simple Scheme for Generating an n -Qubit W State in a Trapped-Ion System without a Lamb–Dicke Limit

Zheng Xiao-Juan, Xue-mei Xu, Fangping Ouyang +1 more

A simple and scalable scheme is proposed to generate a n-qubit W state in a trapped-ion system without the Lamb–Dicke limit. The n-qubit W state can be generated by the interaction between the ions and the laser field if the collective mode is initially prepared in the single-phonon state and each ion is in the ground state. The scheme only requires a single laser and avoids laser manipulation of the individual ion. The time required to complete the process decreases with the number of ions. The present scheme is not limited to small values of the LD parameter, which greatly enhances operation speeds.

Robust control of quantized motional states of a chain of trapped ions by collective adiabatic passage

I. E. Linington, Peter A. Ivanov, Nikolay V. Vitanov +1 more

A simple technique for robust generation of vibrational Fock states in a chain of trapped ions is proposed. The method is fast and easy to implement, since only a single chirped laser pulse, simultaneously addressing all of the ions, is required. Furthermore, because the approach uses collective adiabatic passage, significant fluctuations in the intensity or frequency of the laser pulse can be tolerated, and the technique performs well even on the border of the Lamb-Dicke regime. We also demonstrate how this technique may be extended in order to create nonclassical superposition states of the ions' collective motion and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of their internal states. Because only a single laser pulse is required, heating effects arising under realistic experimental conditions are negligibly small.
