Abstract

We study the nature of edge states in extrinsically and spontaneously dimerized states of two-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnets, by performing quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We show that a gapless edge mode emerges in the wide region of the dimerized phases, and the critical exponent of spin correlators along the edge deviates from the value of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) universality in large but finite systems at low temperatures. We also demonstrate that the gapless nature at edges is stable against several perturbations such as external magnetic field, easy-plane XXZ anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and further-neighbor exchange interactions. The edge states exhibit non-TLL behavior, depending strongly on model parameters and kinds of perturbations. Possible ways of detecting these edge states are discussed. Properties of edge states we show in this paper could also be used as reference points to study other edge states of more exotic gapped magnetic phases such as spin liquids.

Nonordinary edge criticality of two-dimensional quantum critical magnets

Lukas Weber, Francesco Parisen Toldin, Stefan Weßel

Based on large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the correlations along the edges of two-dimensional semi-infinite quantum critical Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ systems. In particular, we consider coupled quantum spin-dimer systems at their bulk quantum critical points, including the columnar-dimer model and the plaquette-square lattice. The alignment of the edge spins strongly affects these correlations and the corresponding scaling exponents, with remarkably similar values obtained for various quantum spin-dimer systems. We furthermore observe subtle effects on the scaling behavior from perturbing the edge spins that exhibit the genuine quantum nature of these edge states. Our observations furthermore challenge recent attempts that relate the edge spin criticality to the presence of symmetry-protected topological phases in such quantum spin systems.

Quantum phase transitions in effective spin-ladder models for graphene zigzag nanoribbons

Cornelie Koop, Stefan Weßel

We examine the magnetic correlations in quantum spin models that were derived recently as effective low-energy theories for electronic correlation effects on the edge states of graphene nanoribbons. For this purpose, we employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations to access the large-distance properties, accounting for quantum fluctuations beyond mean-field-theory approaches to edge magnetism. For certain chiral nanoribbons, antiferromagnetic interedge couplings were previously found to induce a gapped quantum disordered ground state of the effective spin model. We find that the extended nature of the intraedge couplings in the effective spin model for zigzag nanoribbons leads to a quantum phase transition at a large, finite value of the interedge coupling. This quantum critical point separates the quantum disordered region from a gapless phase of stable edge magnetism at weak intraedge coupling, which includes the ground states of spin-ladder models for wide zigzag nanoribbons. To study the quantum critical behavior, the effective spin model can be related to a model of two antiferromagnetically coupled Haldane-Shastry spin-half chains with long-ranged ferromagnetic intrachain couplings. The results for the critical exponents are compared also to several recent renormalization-group calculations for related long-ranged interacting quantum systems.

Quantum Spin Liquid in Spin 1/2J1–J2Heisenberg Model on Square Lattice: Many-Variable Variational Monte Carlo Study Combined with Quantum-Number Projections

Satoshi Morita, Ryui Kaneko, Masatoshi Imada

The nature of quantum spin liquids is studied for the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a square lattice containing exchange interactions between nearest-neighbor sites, $J_1$, and those between next-nearest-neighbor sites, $J_2$. We perform variational Monte Carlo simulations together with the quantum-number-projection technique and clarify the phase diagram in the ground state together with its excitation spectra. We obtain the nonmagnetic phase in the region $0.4< J_2/J_1\le 0.6$ sandwiched by the staggered and stripe antiferromagnetic (AF) phases. Our direct calculations of the spin gap support the notion that the triplet excitation from the singlet ground state is gapless in the range of $0.4 < J_2/J_1 \le 0.5$, while the gapped valence-bond-crystal (VBC) phase is stabilized for $0.5 < J_2/J_1 \le 0.6$. The VBC order is likely to have the columnar symmetry with a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the $C_{4v}$ symmetry. The power-law behaviors of the spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the gapless region are consistent with the emergence of the algebraic quantum-spin-liquid phase (critical phase). The exponent of the spin correlation $\langle S(0)S(r)\rangle \propto 1/r^{z+η}$ at a long distance $r$ appears to increase from $z+η\sim 1$ at $J_2/J_1\sim0.4$ toward the continuous transition to the VBC phase at $J_1/J_1\sim0.5$. Our results, however, do not fully exclude the possibility of a direct quantum transition between the staggered AF and VBC phases with a wide critical region and deconfined criticality.

Correlated spin liquids in the quantum kagome antiferromagnet at finite field: a renormalization group analysis

Santanu Pal, Anirban Mukherjee, Siddhartha Lal

We analyze the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ model on the kagome lattice at finite external magnetic field with the help of a non-perturbative zero-temperature renormalization group (RG) technique. The exact nature of the ground and excited state properties (e.g. gapped or gapless spectrum etc) of this system are still debated. Approximate methods have typically been adopted towards understanding the low-energy spectrum. Following the work of Kumar et al (2014 Phys. Rev. B 90 174409), we use a Jordan–Wigner transformation to map the spin problem into one of spinless fermions (spinons) in the presence of a statistical gauge field, and with nearest-neighbor interactions. While the work of Kumar et al was confined mostly to the plateau at 1/3-filling (magnetization per site) in the XY regime, we analyze the role of inter-spinon interactions in shaping the phases around this plateau in the entire XXZ model. The RG phase diagram obtained contains three spin liquid phases whose position is determined as a function of the exchange anisotropy and the energy scale for fluctuations arising from spinon scattering. Two of these spins liquids are topologically ordered states of matter with gapped, degenerate states on the torus. The gap for one of these phases corresponds to the one-spinon band gap of the Azbel–Hofstadter spectrum for the XY part of the Hamiltonian, while the other arises from two-spinon interactions. The Heisenberg point of this problem is found to lie within the interaction gapped spin liquid phase, in broad agreement with a recent experimental finding. The third phase is an algebraic spin liquid with a gapless Dirac spectrum for spinon excitations, and possess properties that show departures from the Fermi liquid paradigm. The three phase boundaries correspond to critical theories, and meet at a SU (2)-symmetric multicritical point. This special critical point agrees well with the gap-closing transition point predicted by Kumar et al . We discuss the relevance of our findings to various recent experiments, as well as results obtained from other theoretical analyses.

Quantum criticality of spinons

Feng He, Yuzhu Jiang, Yi-Cong Yu +2 more

Magnon bound states emerging in one-dimensional (1D) spin chains still lack a rigorous understanding. In this Rapid Communication we show that the length-1 spin strings significantly dominate the critical properties of spinons, magnons, and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution, we analytically calculate the scaling functions of the thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double maxima in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning out from the critical point, indicating three quantum phases: the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), the quantum critical, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phases. For the TLL phase, the Wilson ratio ${R}_{W}=4{K}_{s}$ remains almost temperature independent, where ${K}_{s}$ is the Luttinger parameter. Furthermore, by applying our results, we precisely determine the quantum scalings and critical exponents of all magnetic properties in the ideal 1D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{C}{}_{4}\mathrm{H}{}_{4}\mathrm{N}{}_{2})(\mathrm{NO}{}_{3}){}_{2}$, recently studied by Kono et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015)]. We further find that the magnetization maximum used in experiments is not a good quantity to map out the finite-temperature TLL phase boundary.
