Abstract

We provide a general decomposition of the two-photon state produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in Hermite-Gaussian modes, in the case that the pump beam is described by a Hermite-Gaussian beam of any order. We show that the spatial correlations depend explicitly on the order of the pump beam, as well as other experimental parameters. We use the decomposition to demonstrate a few interesting cases. Our results are applicable to the engineering of two-photon spatial entanglement, in particular for non-Gaussian states.

Transverse spatial entanglement in parametric down-conversion

Stephen Patrick Walborn, Carlos Henrique Monken

It is known that the entanglement present in the transverse spatial properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion depends explicitly on the characteristics of the pump laser beam. Here we show that, for pump beams described by a Hermite-Gaussian mode, the entanglement depends on the beam width as well as the order of the beam. The amount of entanglement generally increases with the order of the beam and is less dependent on the beam width for higher orders. We propose a method to measure the spatial entanglement directly, independent of the dimension of the subsystems.

Conservation and entanglement of Hermite-Gaussian modes in parametric down-conversion

Stephen Patrick Walborn, Sebastião Pádua, Carlos Henrique Monken

We show that the transfer of the angular spectrum of the pump beam to the two-photon state in spontaneous parametric down-conversion enables the generation of entangled Hermite-Gaussian modes. We derive an analytical expression for the two-photon state in terms of these modes and show that there are restrictions on both the parity and order of the down-converted Hermite-Gaussian fields. Using these results, we show that the two-photon state is indeed entangled in Hermite-Gaussian modes. We propose experimental methods of creating maximally-entangled Bell states and nonmaximally entangled pure states of first order Hermite-Gaussian modes.

Spatial two-photon coherence of the entangled field produced by down-conversion using a partially spatially coherent pump beam

Anand K. Jha, Robert W. Boyd

We study the spatial coherence properties of the entangled two-photon field produced by parametric down-conversion (PDC) when the pump field is, spatially, a partially coherent beam. By explicitly treating the case of a pump beam of the Gaussian Schell-model type, we show that in PDC the spatial coherence properties of the pump field get entirely transferred to the spatial coherence properties of the down-converted two-photon field. As one important consequence of this study, we find that, for two-qubit states based on the position correlations of the two-photon field, the maximum achievable entanglement, as quantified by concurrence, is bounded by the degree of spatial coherence of the pump field. These results could be important by providing a means of controlling the entanglement of down-converted photons by tailoring the degree of coherence of the pump field.

Enhanced entanglement from Ince-Gaussian pump beams in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Baghdasar Baghdasaryan, S. Fritzsche

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) has been a reliable process for the generation of entangled photon pairs. In this process, a nonlinear quadratic crystal is pumped by a laser field in order to convert (high-energy) photons into correlated photon pairs whose efficient control plays an essential role in various applications of quantum information processing. In particular, the amount of entanglement has been successfully controlled by adjusting the spatial structure of the incident pump field. Here, we theoretically analyze how the entanglement of the down-converted two-photon state can be further enhanced by using Ince-Gaussian beams with well-defined ellipticity $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$, i.e., solutions of the paraxial wave equation in elliptical coordinates. These spatially structured beams are quite universal as they include both the Laguerre-Gaussian beams for $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ as well as the Hermite-Gaussian beams for $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. We demonstrate that the entanglement of the generated photon pairs in SPDC can be maximized by a proper choice of $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ and that such an enhanced entanglement can be observed experimentally in terms of the Schmidt number.

Pump-tailored alternative Bell state generation in the first-order Hermite–Gaussian basis

Zhe Kan, Andrew A. Voitiv, Patrick C. Ford +2 more

We demonstrate entangled-state swapping, within the Hermite–Gaussian (HG) basis of first-order modes, directly from the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion within a nonlinear crystal. The method works by explicitly tailoring the spatial structure of the pump photon such that it resembles the product of the desired entangled spatial modes exiting the crystal. Importantly, the result is an entangled state of balanced HG modes, which may be beneficial in applications that depend on symmetric accumulations of geometric phase through optics or in applications of quantum sensing and imaging with azimuthal sensitivity. Furthermore, the methods are readily adaptable to other spatial mode bases.

Partially coherent spontaneous parametric downconversion: Twisted Gaussian biphotons

Lucas Hutter, Esteban S. Gómez, G. Lima +1 more

Partially coherent optical beams present phenomena that may not appear in perfectly coherent beams. In this regard, spontaneous parametric downconversion is an intriguing physical process, since the optical properties of the pump laser beam are transferred to the quantum properties of the down-converted photon pairs. Here, the authors study the transfer of twist phase, a novel property of the so-called twisted Gaussian Schell model beams, from a pump beam to down-converted photons. The authors show that a non-zero twist phase can lead to highly entangled yet highly mixed states. The correlations that appear in near/far-field intensity measurements, in the two-photon covariance matrix as well as in orbital angular momentum modes, are explored. The authors derive expressions for the purity of the two-photon state and relate it to the transverse spatial coherence of the pump beam. Their main results utilize a Wigner function formalism that can be applied to a number of scenarios involving partially coherent downconversion sources and contribute to the recent interest in spatially correlated photon pairs produced in mixed states, with possible applications in quantum communication and imaging.
