Abstract

We derive a governing equation for a Kelvin wave supported on a vortex line in a Bose-Einstein condensate, in a rotating cylindrically symmetric parabolic trap, where it is assumed that the shape of the vortex line is dominated by the properties of the condensate at the center of the trap. From this solution the Kelvin wave dispersion relation is determined. In the limit of an oblate trap and in the absence of longitudinal trapping our results are consistent with previous work. We show that the derived Kelvin wave dispersion in the general case is in quantitative agreement with numerical calculations of the Bogoliubov spectrum.

Kelvin Waves of Quantized Vortex Lines in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

Tapio Simula, Takeshi Mizushima, K. Machida

We have theoretically investigated Kelvin waves of quantized vortex lines in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Counterrotating perturbation induces an elliptical instability to the initially straight vortex line, driven by a parametric resonance between a quadrupole mode and a pair of Kelvin modes of opposite momenta. Subsequently, Kelvin waves rapidly decay to longer wavelengths emitting sound waves in the process. We present a modified Kelvin wave dispersion relation for trapped superfluids and propose a simple method to excite Kelvin waves of specific wave number.

Collective dynamics of vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Tapio Simula

We have calculated collective-mode spectra for three-dimensional, rotating Bose-Einstein condensates in oblate harmonic traps using the microscopic Bogoliubov--de Gennes field theory. For condensates with ${N}_{v}$ vortices, ${N}_{v}$ Kelvin-Tkachenko-mode branches are obtained. The features of these modes are compared with those predicted by a classical point-vortex model. We have created movies to visualize the motion of the vortices corresponding to the Kelvin-Tkachenko waves.

Beliaev Damping and Kelvin Mode Spectroscopy of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the Presence of a Vortex Line

Takeshi Mizushima, Masanori Ichioka, K. Machida

It is demonstrated theoretically that the counter-rotating quadrupole mode in a vortex of Bose-Einstein condensates can decay into a pair of Kelvin modes via the Beliaev process. We calculate the spectral weight of a density-response function within the Bogoliubov framework, taking account of both Beliaev and Landau processes. Good agreement with experiment on 87 Rb by Bretin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 100403 (2003)]] allows us to unambiguously identify the decayed mode as the Kelvin wave propagating along a vortex line.

Gyroscopic motion of superfluid-trapped atomic condensates

Halvor M ll Nilsen, Dermot McPeake, J F McCann

The gyroscopic motion of a trapped Bose gas containing a vortex is studied. We model the system as a classical top, as a superposition of coherent hydrodynamic states, by solution of the Bogoliubov equations, and by integration of the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The frequency spectrum of Bogoliubov excitations, including quantum frequency shifts, is calculated and the quantal precession frequency is found to be consistent with experimental results, although a small discrepancy does exist. The superfluid precession is found to be well described by the classical and hydrodynamic models. However, the frequency shifts and helical oscillations associated with vortex bending and twisting require a quantal treatment. In gyroscopic precession, the Kelvin modes m = ±1 are the dominant features giving a vortex kink or bend, while the m = +2 mode is found to be the dominant Kelvin wave associated with vortex twisting.

Perturbative behavior of a vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

Lyndon Koens, A. Martin

We derive a set of equations that describes the shape and behavior of a single perturbed vortex line in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Through the use of a matched asymptotic expansion and a unique coordinate transform, a relation for a vortex's velocity, anywhere along the line, is found in terms of the trapping, rotation, and distortion of the line at that location. This relation is then used to find a set of differential equations that give the line's specific shape and motion. This work extends a previous similar derivation by Svidzinsky and Fetter [Phys. Rev. A 62, 063617 (2000)], and enables a comparison with recent numerical results.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates with dominant dipolar interactions

Marta Abad, M. Guilleumas, R. Mayol +2 more

We present full three-dimensional numerical calculations of single vortex states in rotating dipolar condensates. We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}\text{C}\text{r}$ atoms with dipole-dipole and $s$-wave contact interactions confined in an axially symmetric harmonic trap. We obtain the vortex states by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the rotating frame with no further approximations. We investigate the properties of a single vortex and calculate the critical angular velocity for different values of the $s$-wave scattering length. We show that, whereas the standard variational approach breaks down in the limit of pure dipolar interactions, exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can be obtained for values of the $s$-wave scattering length down to zero. The energy barrier for the nucleation of a vortex is calculated as a function of the vortex displacement from the rotation axis for different values of the angular velocity of the rotating trap.

We present full three-dimensional numerical calculations of single vortex states in rotating dipolar condensates.
