Simpler semidefinite programs for completely bounded norms

Abstract

The completely bounded trace and spectral norms, for finite-dimensional spaces, are known to be efficiently expressible by semidefinite programs (J. Watrous, Theory of Computing 5: 11, 2009). This paper presents two new, and arguably much simpler, semidefinite programming formulations of these norms.

A Family of Norms With Applications In Quantum Information Theory II

Nathaniel Johnston, David W. Kribs

We consider the problem of computing the family of operator norms recently introduced in arXiv:0909.3907. We develop a family of semidefinite programs that can be used to exactly compute them in small dimensions and bound them in general. Some theoretical consequences follow from the duality theory of semidefinite programming, including a new constructive proof that there are non-positive partial transpose Werner states that are r-undistillable for arbitrary r. Several examples are considered via a MATLAB implementation of the semidefinite program, including the case of Werner states and randomly generated states via the Bures measure, and approximate distributions of the norms are provided. We extend these norms to arbitrary convex mapping cones and explore their implications with positive partial transpose states.

Semidefinite programming formulations for the completely bounded norm of a tensor

Sander Gribling, Monique Laurent

We show that a certain tensor norm, the completely bounded norm, can be expressed by a semidefinite program. This tensor norm recently attracted attention in the field of quantum computing, where it was used by Arunachalam, Briët and Palazuelos for characterizing the quantum query complexity of Boolean functions. Combined with their results, we obtain a new characterization of the quantum query complexity through semidefinite programming. Using the duality theory of semidefinite programming we obtain a new type of certificates for large query complexity. We show that our class of certificates encompasses the linear programming certificates corresponding to the approximate degree of a Boolean function.

Tightening Continuity Bounds for Entropies and Bounds on Quantum Capacities

Michael G. Jabbour, Nilanjana Datta

Uniform continuity bounds on entropies are generally expressed in terms of a single distance measure between probability distributions or quantum states, typically, the total variation- or trace distance. However, if an additional distance measure is known, the continuity bounds can be significantly strengthened. Here, we prove a tight uniform continuity bound for the Shannon entropy in terms of both the local- and total variation distances, sharpening an inequality in (Sason, 2013). We also obtain a uniform continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in terms of both the operator norm- and trace distances. We then apply our results to compute upper bounds on channel capacities. We first refine the concept of approximate degradable channels by introducing$(\varepsilon ,\nu)$–degradable channels. These are$\varepsilon $–close in diamond norm and$\nu $–close in completely bounded spectral norm to their complementary channel when composed with a degrading channel. This leads to improved upper bounds to the quantum- and private classical capacities of such channels. Moreover, these bounds can be further improved by considering certain unstabilized versions of the above norms. We show that upper bounds on the latter can be efficiently expressed as semidefinite programs. As an application, we obtain a new upper bound on the quantum capacity of the qubit depolarizing channel.

A fast semidefinite approach to solving binary quadratic problems

Peng Wang, Chunhua Shen, Anton van den Hengel

Many computer vision problems can be formulated as binary quadratic programs (BQPs). Two classic relaxation methods are widely used for solving BQPs, namely, spec-tral methods and semidefinite programming (SDP), each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Spectral relaxation is simple and easy to implement, but its bound is loose. Semidefinite relaxation has a tighter bound, but its computational complexity is high for large scale prob-lems. We present a new SDP formulation for BQPs, with two desirable properties. First, it has a similar relaxation bound to conventional SDP formulations. Second, com-pared with conventional SDP methods, the new SDP for-mulation leads to a significantly more efficient and scalable dual optimization approach, which has the same degree of complexity as spectral methods. Extensive experiments on various applications including clustering, image segmen-tation, co-segmentation and registration demonstrate the usefulness of our SDP formulation for solving large-scale BQPs. 1.
