Abstract

The momentum distribution is a powerful probe of strongly interacting systems that are expected to display universal behavior. This is contained in the contact parameters which relate few- and many-body properties. Here we consider a Bose gas in two dimensions and explicitly show that the two-body contact parameter is universal and then demonstrate that the momentum distribution at next-to-leading order has a logarithmic dependence on momentum which is vastly different from the three-dimensional case. Based on this, we propose a scheme for measuring the effective dimensionality of a quantum many-body system by exploiting the functional form of the momentum distribution.

Efimov correlations in strongly interacting Bose gases

Marcus Barth, Johannes Hofmann

We compute the virial coefficients, the contact parameters, and the momentum distribution of a strongly interacting three-dimensional Bose gas by means of a virial expansion up to third order in the fugacity, which takes into account three-body correlations exactly. Our results characterize the nondegenerate regime of the interacting Bose gas, where the thermal wavelength is smaller than the interparticle spacing but the scattering length may be arbitrarily large. We observe a rapid variation of the third virial coefficient as the scattering length is tuned across the three-atom and the atom-dimer thresholds. The momentum distribution at unitarity displays a universal high-momentum tail with a log-periodic momentum dependence, which is a direct signature of Efimov physics. We provide a quantitative description of the momentum distribution at high momentum as measured by P. Makotyn et al. [Nat. Phys. 10, 116 (2014)], and our calculations indicate that the lowest trimer state might not be occupied in the experiment. Our results allow for a spectroscopy of Efimov states in the unitary limit.

Two- and three- dimensional few-body systems in the universal regime

F. F. Bellotti

Macro properties of cold atomic gases are driven by few-body correlations, even if the gas has thousands of particles. Quantum systems composed of two and three particles with attractive zero\=/range pairwise interactions are considered for general masses and interaction strengths in two and three dimensions (2D and 3D). The Faddeev decomposition is used to derive the equations for the bound state, which is the starting point for the investigation of universal properties of few\=/body systems, i.e. those that all potentials with the same physics at low energy are able to describe in a model\=/independent form. In 2D, the number of bound states in a three\=/body system increases without bound as the mass of one particle becomes much lighter than the other two. The analytic form of an effective potential between the heavy particles explains the mass\=/dependence on the number of bound energy levels. An exact analytic expression for the large\=/momentum asymptotic behaviour of the spectator function in the Faddeev equation is presented. The spectator function and its asymptotic form define the two- and three\=/body contact parameters. The two\=/body parameter is found to be independent of the quantum state in some specific 2D systems. The 2D and 3D momentum distributions have a distinct sub\=/leading form whereas the 3D term depends on the mass of the particles. A model that interpolates between 2D and 3D is proposed and a sharp transition in the energy spectrum of three-body systems is found.

Tan’s Two-Body Contact in a Planar Bose Gas: Experiment versus Theory

Adam Rançon, N. Dupuis

We determine the two-body contact in a planar Bose gas confined by a transverse harmonic potential, using the nonperturbative functional renormalization group. We use the three-dimensional thermodynamic definition of the contact where the latter is related to the derivation of the pressure of the quasi-two-dimensional system with respect to the three-dimensional scattering length of the bosons. Without any free parameter, we find a remarkable agreement with the experimental data of Zou et al. [Tan's two-body contact across the superfluid transition of a planar Bose gas, Nat. Commun. 12, 760 (2021).NCAOBW2041-172310.1038/s41467-020-20647-6] from low to high temperatures, including the vicinity of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We also show that the short-distance behavior of the pair distribution function and the high-momentum behavior of the momentum distribution are determined by two contacts: the three-dimensional contact for length scales smaller than the characteristic length ℓ_{z}=sqrt[ℏ/mω_{z}] of the harmonic potential and, for length scales larger than ℓ_{z}, an effective two-dimensional contact, related to the three-dimensional one by a geometric factor depending on ℓ_{z}.

Comparative study of one-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions from the viewpoint of universal relations for correlation functions

Yuta Sekino, Shina Tan, Yusuke Nishida

One-dimensional spinless Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions have the close interrelation via Girardeau's Bose-Fermi mapping, leading to the correspondences in their energy spectra and thermodynamics. However, correlation functions are in general not identical between these systems. We derive in both systems the exact universal relations for correlation functions, which hold for any energy eigenstate and any statistical ensemble of the eigenstates with or without a trapping potential. These relations include the large-momentum behaviors of static structure factors and of momentum distributions as well as energy relations, which connect the sums of kinetic and interaction energies to the momentum distributions. The relations involve two- and three-body contacts, which are the integrals of local pair and triad correlations, respectively. We clarify how the relations for bosons and fermions differ and are connected with each other. In particular, we find that the three-body contact makes no contribution to the bosonic energy relation, but it plays a crucial role in the fermionic one. In addition, we compute the exact momentum distribution for any number of fermions in the unitary limit.

Single-particle momentum distribution of Efimov states in noninteger dimensions

D. S. Rosa, T. Frederico, Gastão I. Krein +1 more

We studied the single-particle momentum distribution of mass-imbalanced Efimov states embedded in noninteger dimensions. The contact parameters, which can be related to the thermodynamic properties of the gas, were extracted from the tail of the single-particle momentum densities. We studied the dependence of the contact parameters on the progressive change in the noninteger dimension, ranging from three ($D=3$) to two ($D=2$) dimensions. Within this interval, we move from the $D=3$ regime where the Efimov discrete-scale symmetry drives the physics to close to the critical dimension, which depends on the mass imbalance, where the continuum-scale symmetry takes place. We found that the two- and three-body contacts grow significantly in magnitude with the decrease of the noninteger dimension towards the critical dimension, impacting observables of resonantly interacting trapped Bose gases.

Contact parameters in two dimensions for general three-body systems

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

We study the two-dimensional three-body problem in the general case of three distinguishable particles interacting through zero-range potentials. The Faddeev decomposition is used to write the momentum-space wave function. We show that the large-momentum asymptotic spectator function has the same functional form as derived previously for three identical particles. We derive the analytic relations between the three different Faddeev components for the three distinguishable particles. We investigate the one-body momentum distributions both analytically and numerically and analyze the tail of the distributions to obtain two- and three-body contact parameters. We specialize from the general cases to the examples of two identical, interacting or non-interacting, particles. We find that the two-body contact parameter is not a universal constant in the general case and show that the universality is recovered when a subsystem is composed of two identical non-interacting particles. We also show that the three-body contact parameter is negligible in the case of one non-interacting subsystem compared to the situation where all the subsystems are bound. As an example, we present the results for mixtures of lithium with two cesium or two potassium atoms, which are systems of current experimental interest.
