Abstract

Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chain materials are known to substantially alter their static and dynamic properties when experiencing an effective transverse staggered field originating from the varying local environment of the individual spins. We present a temperature-, angular- and field-dependent ${}^{29}$Si NMR study of the model compound BaCu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$O${}_{7}$. The experimental data are interpreted in terms of the divergent low-temperature transverse susceptibility, predicted by theory for spin chains in coexisting longitudinal and transverse staggered fields. First, our analysis employs a finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the relevant one-dimensional Hamiltonian. Next, we compare our numerical with the presently known analytical results. With an analysis based on crystal symmetries, we show how the anisotropic contribution to the sample magnetization is experimentally accessible even below the ordering temperature, in spite of its competition with the collinear order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase. The modification of static and dynamic properties of the system due to the presence of a local transverse staggered field (LTSF) acting on the one-dimensional spin array are argued to cause the unusual spin reorientation transitions observed in BaCu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$O${}_{7}$. On the basis of a Ginzburg-Landau type analysis, we discuss aspects of competing spin structures in the presence of magnetic order and of the enhanced transverse susceptibility.

Magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ model in the presence of longitudinal, transverse and transverse staggered magnetic fields: effect of inhomogeneity property

Hamid Arian Zad, Moones Sabeti, Azam Zoshki

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin=1/2 chain under both homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic fields are theoretically studied at finite low temperature. To this end, we rigorously study the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the model in the vicinity of three different magnetic fields including longitudinal, transverse and transverse staggered magnetic fields. The thermodynamic parameters of the model are investigated under two conditions separately: I) when the model is putted in the presence of homogeneous magnetic fields; II) when a finite inhomogeneity is considered for all applied magnetic fields in the Hamiltonian. We show that at low temperature, independent of the chain size, the magnetization curve versus longitudinal field has some plateaus, which convert to their counterpart quasi-plateaus when the transverse magnetic field increases. Moreover, the influence of the transverse and staggered transverse magnetic fields, and their corresponding inhomogeneities on the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat is reported in detail. We find that the inhomogeneity has a substantial effect on the thermodynamic parameters of the model under consideration.

Anisotropic antiferromagnetic spin chains in a transverse field: Reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization

Yasuhiro Hieida, Kouichi Okunishi, Yasuhiro Akutsu

We investigate one-dimensional $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ antiferromagnetic quantum-spin chains with easy-axis anisotropies in a transverse field. We calculate both the uniform magnetization and the staggered magnetization, using a variant of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that the staggered magnetizations exhibit reentrant behavior as functions of the transverse field, where the competition between the classical N\'eel order and the quantum fluctuations plays an important role. We also discuss the critical behavior associated with the staggered magnetizations.

Heisenberg spin-1 chain in a staggered magnetic field: A density-matrix-renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Xi Dai, Shaojin Qin +2 more

Using the density-matrix-renormalization-group technique, we calculate numerically the low-energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of the ${R}_{2}{\mathrm{BaNiO}}_{5} (R\ensuremath{\ne}Y)$ family below the N\'eel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth (R) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experimental data. The correlation functions for this model are also calculated. The transverse correlations display the anticipated exponential decay with shorter correlation length, while the longitudinal correlations show explicitly the induced staggered magnetization.

Low-energy properties of anisotropic two-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg models in staggered magnetic fields

Bin Xi, Shijie Hu, Jize Zhao +3 more

We present a systematic study of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in staggered magnetic fields in two dimensions. To mimic real materials, we consider a system of coupled, antiferromagnetic chains, whose interchain interaction can be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic. When the staggered field is commensurate with the magnetic interactions, an energy gap opens immediately and follows a power law as a function of the applied field, similar to the situation in one dimension. When the field competes with the interactions, a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs from a gapless, magnetically ordered phase at low fields to a gapped, disordered regime. We use a continuous-time Monte Carlo method to compute the staggered moment of the ordered phases and the spin gap of the disordered phases. We deduce the phase diagrams as functions of the anisotropy ratio and the applied field, and calculate the scaling behavior of the models in both quantities. We show that in the competitive case, the staggered field acts to maintain a regime of quasi-1D behavior around the QPT, and we discuss as a consequence the nature of the crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to 2D physics.

Repulsively bound magnon excitations of a spin- 1 2 XXZ chain in a staggered transverse field

Catalin-Mihai Halati, Zhe Wang, T. Lorenz +2 more

We study the excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain with antiferromagnetic Ising anisotropy across a magnetic quantum phase transition induced by the application of a site-dependent transverse magnetic field. Motivated by the chain antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{BaCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, we consider a situation where the transverse magnetic field has a strong uniform component and a weaker staggered part. To determine the nature of the excitations giving rise to the spin dynamical structure factor, we use a combination of analytical approaches and the numerically exact time-dependent matrix product state method. We identify below the quantum phase transition high-energy many-body two-magnon and three-magnon repulsively bound states which are clearly visible due to the staggered component of the magnetic field. At high magnetic fields and low temperature, single magnons dominate the dynamics. Our theory results are in very good agreement with terahertz spectroscopy experimental results.

Field-induced gap in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Changfeng Chen +2 more

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.
