A new non-Abelian topological superfluid of cold Fermi gases in anisotropic and spin-dependent optical lattices

Abstract

To realize non-Abelian s-wave topological superfluid (TS) of cold Fermi gases, generally a Zeeman magnetic field larger than superfluid pairing gap is necessary. In this paper we find that using an anisotropic and spin-dependent optical lattice (ASDOL) to trap gases, a new non-Abelian TS phase appears, in contrast to an isotropic and spin-independent optical lattice. A characteristic of this new non-Abelian TS is that Zeeman magnetic field can be smaller than the superfluid pairing gap. By self-consistently solving pairing gap equation and considering the competition against normal state and phase separation, this new phase is also stable. Thus an ASDOL supplies a convenient route to realize TS. We also investigate edge states and the effects of a harmonic trap potential.

Topological superfluid of spinless Fermi gases in p-band honeycomb optical lattices with on-site rotation

Beibing Huang, Xiaosen Yang, Shaolong Wan

In this letter, we put forward another way for realizing topological superfluid (TS). In contrast to conventional method, spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic field are not requisite. Introducing an experimentally feasible technique called on-site rotation (OSR) into p -band honeycomb optical lattices for spinless Fermi gases and considering CDW and pairing on the same footing, we investigate the effects of OSR on superfluidity. The results suggest that when OSR is beyond a critical value, where CDW vanishes, the system transits from a normal superfluid (NS) with zero TKNN number to TS labeled by a non-zero TKNN number. In addition, phase transitions between different TSs are also possible.

Topological superfluid phases of attractive Fermi-Hubbard model in narrow-band cold-atom optical lattices

Tudor D. Stanescu, Sumanta Tewari, V. W. Scarola

We investigate the effects of attractive Hubbard interaction on two-component fermionic atoms in narrow two-dimensional (2D) energy bands that exhibit Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the presence of an applied Zeeman field. This narrow-band 2D spin-orbit-coupled attractive Fermi-Hubbard model can potentially be realized in cold-atom systems in optical lattices with artificially engineered Rashba SOC and Zeeman field. Employing a self-consistent mean-field approximation for the pairing potential, we uncover a complex phase diagram featuring various topological superfluid (TS) phases, dependent on the chemical potential and the Zeeman field. We focus on the pairing potential and the corresponding quasiparticle gap characterizing the TS phases, which are notably small for a wide-band model with quadratic dispersion near the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point, as found in earlier work. We identify the parameter regimes that maximize the gap. We find that, while generally the value of the pairing potential increases with the reduction of the fermionic bandwidth, as expected for narrow- or flat-band systems, the magnitude of the topological gap characterizing the TS phases reaches a significantly improved maximum of about $10--12.5%$ of the interaction strength at finite values of the hopping amplitude, Rashba coupling, and Zeeman field. Our work establishes a robust operating regime for experimenting with topological superfluids in cold-atom optical lattices.

Inhomogeneous Topological Superfluidity in One-Dimensional Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fermi Gases

Chun Chen

We theoretically predict an exotic topological superfluid state with a spatially modulated pairing gap in one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases. This inhomogeneous topological superfluidity is induced by applying simultaneously a perpendicular Zeeman magnetic field and an equally weighted Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in one-dimensional optical lattices. Based on the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we confirm that this novel topological phase is a unique condensation of Cooper pairs, which manifests the interplay between the inhomogeneity of a superfluid and its nontrivial topological structure. The properties of the emergent Majorana bound states are investigated in detail by examining the associated Z2 topological number, the eigenenergy and density of states spectra, as well as the wave functions of the localized Majorana end modes. The experimental feasibility of observing this new topological state of matter is also discussed.

Non-Abelian Topological Order in s -Wave Superfluids of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

Masatoshi Sato, Yoshiro Takahashi, Satoshi Fujimoto

It is proposed that in s-wave superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser-field-generated effective spin-orbit interactions, a topological phase with gapless edge states and Majorana fermion quasiparticles obeying non-Abelian statistics is realized in the case with a large Zeeman magnetic field. Our scenario provides a promising approach to the realization of quantum computation based on the manipulation of non-Abelian anyons via an s-wave Feshbach resonance.

Topological phase separation in trapped ultracold fermionic gases

Xiaosen Yang, Shaolong Wan

We investigate the harmonically trapped 2D fermionic systems with a effective spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic s-wave superfluidity under the local density approximation, and find that there is a critical value for Zeeman field. When the Zeeman field larger than the critical value, the topological superfluid phases emerge and coexist with the normal superfluid phase, topological phase separation, in the trapped region. Otherwise, the superfluid phase is topologically trivial.
