A staggered fermion chain with supersymmetry on open intervals

Abstract

A strongly interacting fermion chain with supersymmetry on the lattice and open boundary conditions is analysed. The local coupling constants of the model are staggered, and the properties of the ground states as a function of the staggering parameter are examined. In particular, a connection between certain ground-state components and solutions of nonlinear recursion relations associated with the Painlevé VI equation is conjectured. Moreover, various local occupation probabilities in the ground state have the so-called scale-free property, and allow for an exact resummation in the limit of infinite-system size.

Ground-state properties of a supersymmetric fermion chain

Paul Fendley, Christian Hagendorf

We analyze the ground state of a strongly interacting fermion chain with a supersymmetry. We conjecture a number of exact results, such as a hidden duality between weak and strong couplings. By exploiting a scale-free property of the perturbative expansions, we find exact expressions for the order parameters, yielding the critical exponents. We show that the ground state of this fermion chain and another model in the same universality class, the XYZ chain along a line of couplings, are both written in terms of the same polynomials. We demonstrate this explicitly for up to N = 24 sites and provide consistency checks for large N . These polynomials satisfy a recursion relation related to the Painlevé VI differential equation and, using a scale-free property of these polynomials, we derive a simple and exact formula for their limit.

Exact Ground State and Finite-Size Scaling in a Supersymmetric Lattice Model

Matteo Beccaria A, Gian Fabrizio De Angelis

We study a model of strongly correlated fermions in one dimension with extended N = 2 supersymmetry. The model is related to the spin S = 1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain at anisotropy Delta = -1/2 with a real magnetic field on the boundary. We exploit the combinatorial properties of the ground state to determine its exact wave function on finite lattices with up to 30 sites. We compute several correlation functions of the fermionic and spin fields. We discuss the continuum limit by constructing lattice observables with well defined finite-size scaling behavior. For the fermionic model with periodic boundary conditions we give the emptiness formation probability in closed form.

Open spin chains with dynamic lattice supersymmetry

Christian Hagendorf, Jean Liénardy

Abstract The quantum spin 1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropy parameter Δ = − 1 / 2 possesses a dynamic supersymmetry on the lattice. This supersymmetry and a generalisation to higher spin are investigated in the case of open spin chains. A family of non-diagonal boundary interactions that are compatible with the lattice supersymmetry and depend on several parameters is constructed. The cohomology of the corresponding supercharges is explicitly computed as a function of the parameters and the length of the chain. This cohomology is shown to be non-trivial for certain specific values of the parameters that lead to diagonal boundary interactions. For spin 1/2, they were previously studied by Fendley and Yang. The non-trivial cohomology implies that the spin-chain ground states are supersymmetry singlets. Special scalar products involving an arbitrary number of these supersymmetry singlets for chains of different lengths are exactly computed. In the case of spin 1/2, the scalar products are used to determine the logarithmic bipartite fidelity. Its scaling limit is shown to match the predictions of conformal field theory.

Exact and simple results for the XYZ and strongly interacting fermion chains

Paul Fendley, Christian Hagendorf

We conjecture exact and simple formulas for some physical quantities in two quantum chains. A classic result of this type is Onsager, Kaufman and Yang's formula for the spontaneous magnetization in the Ising model, subsequently generalized to the chiral Potts models. We conjecture that analogous results occur in the XYZ chain when the couplings obey J x J y + J y J z + J x J z = 0, and in a related fermion chain with strong interactions and supersymmetry. We find exact formulas for the magnetization and gap in the former, and the staggered density in the latter, by exploiting the fact that certain quantities are independent of finite-size effects.

Non-local spacetime supersymmetry on the lattice

Xiao Yang, Paul Fendley

We show that several well-known one-dimensional quantum systems possess a hidden non-local supersymmetry. The simplest example is the open XXZ spin chain with Δ = −1/2. We use the supersymmetry to place lower bounds on the ground-state energy with various boundary conditions. For an odd number of sites in the periodic chain, and with a particular boundary magnetic field in the open chain, we can derive the ground-state energy exactly. The supersymmetry thus explains why it is possible to solve the Bethe equations for the ground state in these cases. We also show that a similar spacetime supersymmetry holds for the t–J model at its integrable ferromagnetic point, where the spacetime supersymmetry and the Hamiltonian it yields coexist with a global u (1|2) graded Lie algebra symmetry. Possible generalizations to other algebras are discussed.

Interacting Kitaev chain with N=1 supersymmetry

Urei Miura, Kenji Shimomura, Keisuke Totsuka

Lattice models with supersymmetry are known to exhibit a variety of remarkable properties that do not exist in the relativistic models. In this paper, we introduce an interacting generalization of the Kitaev chain of Majorana fermions with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and investigate its low-energy properties, paying particular attention to the ground-state degeneracy and low-lying fermionic excitations. First, we establish the existence of a phase with spontaneously broken supersymmetry and a phase transition out of it with the help of variational arguments and the exact ground state. We then develop, based on the superfield formalism, a simple mean-field theory, in which the order parameters detect supersymmetry breaking, to understand the ground-state phases and low-lying Nambu-Goldstone fermions. At the solvable point (frustration-free point), the exact ground state of an open chain exhibits large degeneracy of the order of the system size, which is attributed to the existence of a zero-energy domain wall (dubbed kink or skink) separating the topological and trivial states of Majorana fermions. Our results may shed new light on the intriguing ground-state properties of supersymmetric lattice models.
