Measurements, quantum discord, and parity in spin-1 systems

Abstract

We consider the evaluation of the quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlations in a system formed by a spin-1 and a complementary spin system. A characterization of general projective measurements in such system in terms of spin averages is thereby introduced, which allows one to easily visualize their deviation from standard spin measurements. It is shown that the measurement optimizing these measures corresponds in general to a nonspin measurement. The important case of states that commute with the total ${S}_{z}$ spin-parity is discussed in detail, and the general stationary measurements for such states (parity preserving measurements) are identified. Numerical and analytical results for the quantum discord, the geometric discord, and the one way information deficit in the relevant case of a mixture of two aligned spin-1 states are also presented.

QUANTUM DISCORD AND RELATED MEASURES OF QUANTUM CORRELATIONS IN FINITE XY CHAINS

N. Canosa, L. Ciliberti, R. Rossignoli

We examine the quantum correlations of spin pairs in the ground state of finite XY chains in a transverse field, by evaluating the quantum discord as well as other related entropic measures of quantum correlations. A brief review of the latter, based on generalized entropic forms, is also included. It is shown that parity effects are of crucial importance for describing the behavior of these measures below the critical field. It is also shown that these measures reach full range in the immediate vicinity of the factorizing field, where they become independent of separation and coupling range. Analytical and numerical results for the quantum discord, the geometric discord and other measures in spin chains with nearest neighbor coupling and in fully connected spin arrays are also provided.

Analytical progress on symmetric geometric discord: Measurement-based upper bounds

Adam Miranowicz, Paweł Horodecki, Ravindra W. Chhajlany +2 more

Quantum correlations may be measured by means of the distance from the state to the subclass of states $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ having well-defined classical properties. In particular, a geometric measure of asymmetric discord [Daki\ifmmode \acute{c}\else \'{c}\fi{} et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 190502 (2010)] was recently defined as the Hilbert-Schmidt distance from a given two-qubit state to the closest classical-quantum (CQ) correlated state. We analyze a geometric measure of symmetric discord defined as the Hilbert-Schmidt distance from a given state to the closest classical-classical (CC) correlated state. The optimal member of $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ is just a specially measured original state for both the CQ and CC discords. This implies that this measure is equal to the quantum deficit of postmeasurement purity. We discuss some general relations between the CC discords and explain why an analytical formula for the CC discord, contrary to the CQ discord, can hardly be found even for a general two-qubit state. Instead of such an exact formula, we find simple analytical-measurement-based upper bounds for the CC discord which, as we show, are tight and faithful in the case of two qubits and may serve as independent indicators of two-party quantum correlations. In particular, we propose an adaptive upper bound, which corresponds to the optimal states induced by single-party measurements: optimal measurement on one of the parties determines an optimal measurement on the other party. We discuss how to refine the adaptive upper bound by nonoptimal single-party measurements and by an iterative procedure which usually rapidly converges to the CC discord. We also raise the question of optimality of the symmetric measurements realizing the CC discord on symmetric states and give a partial answer for the qubit case.

Quantum Discord and Information Deficit in Spin Chains

Norma Canosa, Leonardo Ciliberti, Raúl Rossignoli

We examine the behavior of quantum correlations of spin pairs in a finite anisotropic XY spin chain immersed in a transverse magnetic field, through the analysis of the quantum discord and the conventional and quadratic one-way information deficits. We first provide a brief review of these measures, showing that the last ones can be obtained as particular cases of a generalized information deficit based on general entropic forms. All of these measures coincide with an entanglement entropy in the case of pure states, but can be non-zero in separable mixed states, vanishing just for classically correlated states. It is then shown that their behavior in the exact ground state of the chain exhibits similar features, deviating significantly from that of the pair entanglement below the critical field. In contrast with entanglement, they reach full range in this region, becoming independent of the pair separation and coupling range in the immediate vicinity of the factorizing field. It is also shown, however, that significant differences between the quantum discord and the information deficits arise in the local minimizing measurement that defines them. Both analytical and numerical results are provided.

Quantum discord under two-side projective measurements

Jianwei Xu

The original definition of quantum discord of bipartite states was defined under one-side projective measurements, it describes quantum correlation more extensively than entanglement. Dakic, Vedral, and Brukner [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 190502 (2010)] introduced a geometric measure of quantum discord, and Luo, Fu [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{82}, 034302 (2010)] simplified the expression of it. In this paper we generalize the quantum discord to the case of two-side projective measurements, and also define a geometric measure on it. Further, a simplified expression and a lower bound of this geometric measure are derived and explicit expressions are obtained for some special cases.

Revealing Tripartite Quantum Discord with Tripartite Information Diagram

Wei-Ting Lee, Che-Ming Li

A new measure based on the tripartite information diagram is proposed for identifying quantum discord in tripartite systems. The proposed measure generalizes the mutual information underlying discord from bipartite to tripartite systems, and utilizes both one-particle and two-particle projective measurements to reveal the characteristics of the tripartite quantum discord. The feasibility of the proposed measure is demonstrated by evaluating the tripartite quantum discord for systems with states close to Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger, W, and biseparable states. In addition, the connections between tripartite quantum discord and two other quantum correlations—namely genuine tripartite entanglement and genuine tripartite Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steering—are briefly discussed. The present study considers the case of quantum discord in tripartite systems. However, the proposed framework can be readily extended to general N-partite systems.
