Abstract

Using a sum rule approach we investigate the dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic trap. The crucial role played by the spin polarizability of the gas is pointed out. We show that the lowest dipole frequency exhibits a characteristic jump at the transition between the stripe and spin-polarized phase. Near the second-order transition between the spin-polarized and the single minimum phase the lowest frequency is vanishingly small for large condensates, reflecting the divergent behavior of the spin polarizability. We compare our results with recent experimental measurements as well as with the predictions of effective mass approximation.

Collective Dipole Oscillations of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate

Jinyi Zhang, Si-Cong Ji, Zhu Chen +9 more

In this Letter, we present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as the oscillation amplitude. The anharmonic properties beyond the effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as the amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at a place with a divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of the spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility--a static physical quantity--can be measured via the dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates the magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from the nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a benchmark for recently developed theoretical approaches.

Anisotropic dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Giovanni Italo Martone, Yun Li, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

By calculating the density response function we identify the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the velocity of sound along the direction of spin-orbit coupling is deeply quenched and vanishes when one approaches the second-order phase transition between the plane-wave and the zero momentum quantum phases. We also point out the emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum for small values of the Raman coupling, providing the onset of the transition to the stripe phase. Our findings point out the occurrence of a strong anisotropy in the dynamic behavior of the gas. A hydrodynamic description accounting for the collective oscillations in both uniform and harmonically trapped gases is also derived.

Revealing Unconventional Properties of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate from Collective Dipole Oscillation

Shuai Chen, Jinyi Zhang, Si-Cong Ji +5 more

Interaction between matter field and gauge field plays a fundamental role in many areas of physics. Recently, a non-abelian gauge field has been successfully synthesized in laboratory for ultracold neutral bosonic atoms, yielding the coupling between the pseudo-spin of an atom and its orbital motion. This new superfluid has many unconventional properties remaining to be explored. Here we study the collective oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. We find that the frequency of dipole oscillation deviates from the harmonic trap frequency and depends on the oscillation amplitude. Such an unharmonic behavior reveals the nonabelain character of the gauge field. We also observe that a magnetization oscillation is induced by the dipole motion, as a manifestation of the absence of the Galilean invariance of this system. We develop a variational wave-function method that well describes the dipole oscillation, except in the regime with two degenerate single-particle energy minima separated by a low barrier. In this regime, since the harmonic trapping potential plays an analogous role as kinetic energy in a real-space double-well potential, macroscopic quantum tunneling in momentum space is observed in the dipole oscillation.

Spin-dipole oscillation and relaxation of coherently coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

A Sartori, Jamir Marino, S. Stringari +1 more

We study the static and the dynamic response of coherently coupled two component Bose–Einstein condensates due to a spin-dipole perturbation. The static dipole susceptibility is determined and is shown to be a key quantity to identify the second order ferromagnetic transition occurring at large inter-species interaction. The dynamics, which is obtained by quenching the spin-dipole perturbation, is very much affected by the system being paramagnetic or ferromagnetic and by the correlation between the motional and the internal degrees of freedom. In the paramagnetic phase the gas exhibits well defined out-of-phase dipole oscillations, whose frequency can be related to the susceptibility of the system using a sum rule approach. In particular in the interaction SU (2) symmetric case, i.e., all the two-body interactions are the same, the external dipole oscillation coincides with the internal Rabi flipping frequency. In the ferromagnetic case, where linear response theory in not applicable, the system shows highly non-linear dynamics. In particular we observe phenomena related to ground state selection: the gas, initially trapped in a domain wall configuration, reaches a final state corresponding to the magnetic ground state plus small density ripples. Interestingly, the time during which the gas is unable to escape from its initial configuration is found to be proportional to the square root of the wall surface tension.

Critical temperature of a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Bose gas in a harmonic trap

Hui Hu, Xia-Ji Liu

We investigate theoretically Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal, trapped Bose gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Analytic results for the critical temperature and condensate fraction are derived based on a semiclassical approximation to the single-particle-energy spectrum and density of states and are compared with exact results obtained by explicitly summing discrete energy levels for a small number of particles. We find a significant decrease of the critical temperature and of the condensate fraction due to finite spin-orbit coupling. For a large coupling strength and a finite number of particles $N$, the critical temperature scales as ${N}^{2/5}$ and ${N}^{2/3}$ in three and two dimensions, respectively, contrasted to the predictions of ${N}^{1/3}$ and ${N}^{1/2}$ in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Finite-size corrections in three dimensions are also discussed.

Ground-state phases and collective modes of supersolid spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Jun-Cheng Liang, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Ju-Kui Xue

Supersolidity, characterized by superfluidity and crystallization, is an exotic state of matter. The spin-orbit- (SO-) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide an ideal paradigm for exploring this quantum state. Here, we present a theoretical analysis of the ground-state phases and collective modes of supersolid SO-coupled BECs in a harmonic trap. The phase diagram of three ground-state phases (i.e., the supersolid phase, plane-wave phase, and zero-momentum phase) is obtained analytically under the condition $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ll}{k}_{0}$ (here, $\ensuremath{\omega}$ is harmonic trap frequency, ${k}_{0}$ is SO-coupling strength), showing the spin polarization, the phase diagram, and the contrast of the supersolid stripes can be effectively manipulated by trapping potential. An efficient scheme to manipulate the supersolid phase is provided. Furthermore, with particular discussion of the supersolid phase, the collective modes in all three phases are obtained with a unified approach, and softening of both dipole and breathing modes with divergence of effective mass at phase transition point is explained analytically and well confirmed by direct numerical simulations. The impact of SO coupling on local currents during the breathing mode is discussed. The anharmonic collective modes are also revealed with the appearance of the flat band in the single-particle dispersion, especially when SO-coupling strength is comparable with trapping potential. Our theoretical method provides a clear physical picture that collective modes of SO-coupled BECs can be regarded as classical harmonic oscillators with an effective mass containing the SO coupling.
