ac Stark shift and multiphotonlike resonances in low-frequency-driven optical lattices

Abstract

We suggest that Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices subjected to ac forcing with a smooth envelope may provide detailed experimental access to multiphotonlike transitions between ac-Stark-shifted Bloch bands. Such transitions correspond to resonances described theoretically by avoided quasienergy crossings. We show that the width of such anticrossings can be inferred from measurements involving asymmetric pulses. We also introduce a pulse tracking strategy for locating the particular driving amplitudes for which resonances occur. Our numerical calculations refer to a currently existing experimental setup [E. Haller, R. Hart, M. J. Mark, J. G. Danzl, L. Reichs\"ollner, and H.-C. N\"agerl, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 200403 (2010)].

Driven optical lattices as strong-field simulators

Stephan Arlinghaus, Martin Holthaus

We argue that ultracold atoms in strongly shaken optical lattices can be subjected to conditions similar to those experienced by electrons in laser-irradiated crystalline solids, but without introducing secondary polarization effects. As a consequence, one can induce nonperturbative multiphoton-like resonances due to the mutual penetration of ac-Stark-shifted Bloch bands. These phenomena can be detected with a combination of currently available laboratory techniques.

Coherent transport in a Bose-Einstein condensate inside an optical lattice

Maria Luisa Chiofalo, Marco Polini, M. P. Tosi

Experiments on atomic Bose-Einstein condensates inside quasi-one-dimensional optical lattices and related developments in the realization of atom lasers are currently at the frontiers in atomic physics. We give a short review of theoretical progress in evaluating the coherent transport of matter in such configurations, which has been based on an adaptation of the Wannier function representation of quasi-particle states in periodic potentials and on the use of advanced numerical methods for the solution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We present various methods by which the band structure of the elementary excitations of a periodic condensate may be probed and describe in terms of Bloch oscillations the coherent emission of matter pulses from a condensate inside an optical lattice under the force of gravity. A harmonic force can be applied to a condensate inside a magnetic trap by a rapid displacement of the center of the trap and a transition of the condensate from superfluid to dissipative behavior is driven by superposing an optical lattice. Finally, in the superfluid regime the combination of a constant force and a harmonic force in the presence of an optical lattice drives Josephson-type oscillations of the condensate, leading to observable resonances and multimode behavior.

Bloch Oscillations and Mean-Field Effects of Bose-Einstein Condensates in 1D Optical Lattices

O. Morsch, Jörg Helge Müller, Matteo Cristiani +2 more

We have loaded Bose-Einstein condensates into one-dimensional, off-resonant optical lattices and accelerated them by chirping the frequency difference between the two lattice beams. For small values of the lattice well depth, Bloch oscillations were observed. Reducing the potential depth further, Landau-Zener tunneling out of the lowest lattice band, leading to a breakdown of the oscillations, was also studied and used as a probe for the effective potential resulting from mean-field interactions as predicted by Choi and Niu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2022 (1999)]. The effective potential was measured for various condensate densities and trap geometries, yielding good qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations.

Anomalous transitions in two-level systems driven by the ac Stark effect

W. Leo Meerts, Irving Ozier, Jon T. Hougen

An unusual type of nonresonant absorption signal produced by the ac Stark effect has been observed in a two-level avoided-crossing system. The theory for these anomalous transitions has been developed. The nonresonant signals have been shown to be caused by the perturbation by the oscillating field of the dephasing of the two-level system at the avoided crossing. A series of measurements of these anomalous transitions has been carried out using the avoided-crossing molecular-beam electric-resonance technique. In addition, different types of resonant multiphoton transitions have been investigated. Results are reported for the AE-barrier anticrossing with J = 1 in CH3SiH3. The experimental findings are in good agreement with the theory developed. PACS Nos.: 33.20Bx, 33.80Be, 42.50Hz

Bose-Einstein condensates in 1D optical lattices: nonlinearity and Wannier-Stark spectra

E. Arimondo, D. Ciampini, O. Morsch

We present our experimental investigations on the subject of nonlinearity-modified Bloch-oscillations and of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling between two energy bands in a rubidium Bose Einstein condensate in an accelerated periodic potential. Nonlinearity introduces an asymmetry in Landau-Zener tunneling. We also present measurements of resonantly enhanced tunneling between the Wannier-Stark energy levels for Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into an optical lattice.

Detecting Floquet resonances with directed transport of ultracold atoms

Christopher Grossert, Martin Leder, S. Denisov +2 more

Coherent directed quantum transport of ultracold rubidium atoms in an optical realization of a quantum rocking ratchet is investigated experimentally. By changing parameters of the underlying periodic modulations we resolve transport resonances in the mean momentum of a dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. These resonances are attributed to the avoided crossings between Floquet eigenstates which are widely separated on the energy scale. By increasing the amplitude of the drive we observe a theoretically predicted bifurcation of a single-peak resonance into a doublet. Our results prove the feasibility of fine experimental control over nonequlibrium, coherent quantum transport in ac-driven optical lattices
