Abstract

The generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) has brought the idea of the existence of a minimum measurable length in quantum physics. Depending on this GUP, the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian at the Planck scale is modified. In this paper, we construct the kernel for this GUP-corrected Hamiltonian for a free particle by applying the Hamiltonian path integral approach and checking the validity conditions for this kernel thoroughly. Interestingly, the probabilistic interpretation of this kernel induces a momentum upper bound in the theory which is comparable with GUP-induced maximum momentum uncertainty.

Quantum gravitational decoherence from Generalized Uncertainty Principle with stochastic deformation parameter.

Several theories of quantum gravity propose the existence of a minimal measurable length and maximum measurable momentum near the Planck scale. When integrated into the framework of quantum mechanics, such restrictions lead to the generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which is commonly referred to as the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). The GUP has been applied to a plethora of physical models in order to provide further insights on our understanding of the Universe, both in the macroscopic and the microscopic regime. Nevertheless, the corrections related to GUP are expected to be extremely small, which thus renders experimental verification a difficult task. Therefore, phenomenological approaches on a qualitative level are typically addressed with the aim of enhancing our possibility of detecting these tiny effects. Motivated by a recent work on a universal decoherence mechanism stemming from the standard formulation of GUP, we extend the ideas contained therein by considering a more general form of GUP which includes linear and quadratic momentum terms to examine its implications. To achieve such a picture, we equip the deformation parameter appearing in front of all momentum terms with a stochastic nature, so that the effective decoherence mechanism emerges by taking the average over fluctuations. We find that, despite the apparently small differences among the two generalizations of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, the consequences at the level of the universal decoherence mechanism they entail is significant, as they predict decoherence times that are completely uncorrelated and distinct.

Particle in a Box with Generalized Uncertainty Principle

in ordinary quantum mechanics for the position uncertainty since the minimum value for the uncertainty can be tend to zero. Different theories of quantum gravity, such as string theory, loop quantum gravity, and black hole physics, confirm a minimal observable length. Kempf et al have formulated The minimal length is a fundamental length for position measurement, although there is no lower bound a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) by modifying the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to include an appearance of the length in quantum mechanics. In this study, we have found out the influence of the GUP on the particle for its confinement in a 1D potential box and calculated energy eigenvalues. The modified Schrödinger equation for the particle is factorized to be of second order to obtain the eigenvalues in a handy way. The obtained energy levels are modified from the usual result with GUP parameter dependency. The modification in the energy spectrum due to the GUP characterized by the presence of the minimal length has been also explored graphically.

Minimal length effect on the broadening of free wave packets and its physical implications

Carlos Villalpando, Sujoy K. Modak

We study the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) modified time evolution for the width of wave packets for a scalar potential. The free particle case is solved exactly where the wave-packet broadening is modified by a coupling between the GUP parameter and higher-order moments in the probability distribution in momentum space. We consider two popular forms of deformations widely used in the literature---one of which modifies the commutator with a quadratic term in momentum, while the other modifies it with terms both linear and quadratic in momentum. Unlike the standard case, satisfying Heisenberg uncertainty, here the GUP modified broadening rates, for both deformations, not only depend on the initial size (in both position and momentum space) of the wave packet but also on the initial probability distribution and momentum of the particle. The new rates of wave-packet broadening, for both situations, are modified by a handful of new terms---such as the skewness and kurtosis coefficients, as well as the (constant) momentum of the particle. Comparisons with the standard Heisenberg uncertainty principle--based results show potentially measurable differences in the rates of free wave-packet broadening for physical systems such as the ${C}_{60}$ and ${C}_{176}$ molecules, and more so for large organic molecular wave packets. In doing so, we open a path to scan the GUP parameter space by several orders of magnitude inside the best existing upper bounds for both forms of GUP.

Generalized uncertainty principle and point interaction

DaeKil Park, Eylee Jung

The nonrelativistic quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) is examined when the potential is a one-dimensional $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function. It is shown that unlike usual quantum mechanics, the Schr\"odinger and Feynman's path-integral approaches are inequivalent at the first order of the GUP parameter.

Generalized uncertainty principle and its implications on geometric phases in quantum mechanics

Giuseppe Gaetano Luciano, Luciano Petruzziello

Abstract We study the implications of the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with a minimal measurable length on some quantum mechanical interferometry phenomena, such as the Aharonov–Bohm, Aharonov–Casher, COW and Sagnac effects. By resorting to a modified Schrödinger equation, we evaluate the lowest-order correction to the phase shift of the interference pattern within two different GUP frameworks: the first one is characterized by the redefinition of the physical momentum only, and the other is a Lorentz covariant GUP which also predicts non-commutativity of spacetime. The obtained results allow us to fix upper bounds on the GUP deformation parameters which may be tested through future high-precision interferometry experiments.

A framework for nonrelativistic isotropic models based on generalized uncertainty principles

André Herkenhoff Gomes

Abstract The existence of a fundamental length scale in nature is a common prediction of distinct quantum gravity models. Discovery of such would profoundly change current knowledge of quantum phenomena and modifications to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle may be expected. Despite the attention given to this possibility in the past decades, there has been no common framework for a systematic investigation of so-called generalized uncertainty principles (GUP). In this work we provide such a framework in the context of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Our approach is based on very few assumptions: there is a fundamental length scale, space isotropy, invariance under parity and time reversal transformations, and symmetricity of the position and momentum operators. We show that simple dimensional analysis allows building a common framework for isotropic models based on GUP (we call those iGUP models). We discuss some popular GUP models in this context after elaborating on relevant theoretical aspects of the framework. At last, we translate current bounds on three often investigated GUP models into bounds on parameters of such common iGUP framework.
