Collapse-revival dynamics and atom-field entanglement in the nonresonant Dicke model

Abstract

We consider the dynamics of atomic and field coherent states in the nonresonant Dicke model. At weak coupling an initial product state evolves into a superposition of multiple field coherent states that are correlated with the atomic configuration. This process is accompanied by the buildup and decay of atom-field entanglement and leads to the periodic collapse and revival of Rabi oscillations. We provide a perturbative derivation of the underlying dynamical mechanism that complements the rotating wave approximation at resonance. The identification of two different time scales explains how the dynamical signatures depend on the sign of detuning between the atomic and field frequency and predicts the generation of either atomic or field cat states in the two opposite cases. We finally discuss the restrictions that the buildup of atom-field entanglement during the collapse of Rabi oscillations impose on the validity of semiclassical approximations that neglect entanglement.

Collective effects in the collapse-revival phenomenon and squeezing in the Dicke model

Guy Z. Ramon, Constantin Brif, A. Mann

Resonant interaction of a collection of two-level atoms with a single-mode coherent cavity field is considered in the framework of the Dicke model. We focus on the role of collective atomic effects in the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of the Rabi oscillations. It is shown that the behavior of the system strongly depends on the initial atomic state. In the case of the initial half-excited Dicke state we account for a number of interesting phenomena. The correlations between the atoms result in a suppression of the revival amplitude, and the revival time is halved, compared to the uncorrelated fully excited and ground states. The phenomenon of squeezing of the radiation field in the atom-field interaction is also discussed. For the initial fully excited and ground atomic states, the field is squeezed on the short-time scale, and squeezing can be enhanced by increasing the number of atoms. Some empirical formulas are found which describe the behavior of the system in excellent agreement with numerical results. For the half-excited Dicke state, the field can be strongly squeezed on the long-time scale in the case of two atoms. This kind of squeezing is enhanced by increasing the intensity of the initial coherent field and is of the same nature as revival-time squeezing in the Jaynes-Cummings model. The appearance of this long-time squeezing can be explained using the factorization approximation for semiclassical atomic states.

Collapse and revival of the Doppler-Rabi oscillations of a moving atom in a cavity

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ

Collapse and revival of the Doppler-Rabi oscillations of a two-level atom moving in a cavity electromagnetic field are analyzed. The coupled atom-field dynamics are predicted accurately by numerical calculation and approximately by using the stationary phase approximation combined with the Poisson summation formula. The collapse and revival patterns are shown to be qualitatively different in the cases of moving atom and atom at rest. In particular, quantum revivals of Doppler-Rabi oscillations occur with a period determined by the Doppler shift of the atomic transition frequency. This regime of Doppler-Rabi oscillations requires that the Rabi frequency and the Doppler shift satisfy the condition Ω R ≪ Ω D . Under the inverse relation, the collapse- revival phenomenon generally does not occur. It is shown that even a small amount of atom-cavity detuning eliminates collapse-revival behavior. The analysis is performed for both coherent and thermal cavity fields.

Collapse–revival of squeezing of two atoms in dissipative cavities

Hong‐Mei Zou, Mao-Fa Fang

Based on the time-convolutionless master-equation approach, we investigate the squeezing dynamics of two atoms in dissipative cavities. We find that the atomic squeezing is related to initial atomic states, atom–cavity couplings, non-Markovian effects and resonant frequencies of an atom and its cavity. The results show that a collapse–revival phenomenon will occur in the atomic squeezing and this process is accompanied by the buildup and decay of entanglement between two atoms. Enhancing the atom–cavity coupling can increase the frequency of the collapse–revival of the atomic squeezing. The stronger the non-Markovian effect is, the more obvious the collapse–revival phenomenon is. In particular, if the atom–cavity coupling or the non-Markovian effect is very strong, the atomic squeezing will tend to a stably periodic oscillation in a long time. The oscillatory frequency of the atomic squeezing is dependent on the resonant frequency of the atom and its cavity.

Schrödinger-cat states in the resonant Jaynes-Cummings model: Collapse and revival of oscillations of the photon-number distribution

Vladimír Bužek, H. M. Moya-Cessa, P. L. Knight +1 more

The Jaynes-Cummings model of optical resonance describes the simplest fully quantized interaction between two quantum systems of different nature: a two-level atom (fermionic system) and a quantized field mode (bosonic system). This interaction leads to extreme quantum entanglement of the atom and field. However, the model also predicts that, at precisely half of the revival time, the atom and field become asymptotically disentangled. This disentanglement becomes more exact as the coherent-state amplitude increases. In this paper we investigate the nature of the pure-field-state superposition generated at such times. We show that this superposition is of distinguishable states of the field with the same amplitude but opposite phase. Interference between these components leads to nonclassical oscillations in photon-number distributions and squeezing in quadratures of the field. The Schr\"odinger-cat states of the field are highly transient, and depend very sensitively on the interaction time, the initial intensity of the field, and the atom-field detuning.

A Comparison of Quantum and Semiclassical Rabi Models Near Multiphoton Resonances in the Presence of Parametric Modulation

Marcos V. S. de Paula, Marco A. Damasceno Faustino, Alexandre V. Dodonov

We compare the semiclassical and quantum predictions for the unitary dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a single-mode electromagnetic field under parametric modulation of the atomic parameters in the regime of multiphoton atom–field resonances. We derive approximate analytic solutions for the semiclassical Rabi model when the atomic transition frequency and the atom–field coupling strength undergo harmonic external modulations. These solutions are compared to the predictions of the quantum Rabi model, which we solve numerically for an initial coherent state with a large average photon number (on the order of 104), in the regime of three-photon resonance. We show that, for short enough times and sufficiently intense coherent states, the semiclassical dynamics agrees quite well with the quantum dynamics, although it inevitably fails at longer times due to the absence of collapse–revival behavior. Furthermore, we describe how the field state evolves throughout the interaction, presenting numerical results for the average photon number, entropies (related to atom–field entanglement), and other quantities characterizing the photon number statistics of the electromagnetic field.

Non-conditioned generation of Schrödinger cat states in a cavity

P. P. Munhoz, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We investigate the dynamics of a two-level atom in a cavity filled with a nonlinear medium. We show that the atom-field detuning δ and the nonlinear parameter χ(3) may be combined to yield a periodic dynamics, allowing the generation of almost exact superpositions of coherent states (Schrödinger cats). By analysing the atomic inversion and the field purity, we verify that any initial atom-field state is recovered at each revival time, and that a coherent field interacting with an excited atom evolves to a superposition of coherent states at each collapse time. We show that a mixed field state (statistical mixture of two coherent states) evolves towards an almost pure field state as well (Schrödinger cat). We discuss the validity of these results by using the field fidelity and the Wigner function.
