Abstract

We obtain analytical expressions for the large- and small-radius polarons on the one-dimensional lattice in the TBA approximation. The equations of motion for this model are treated classically for the oscillator subsystem, while a quantum description is used for the electron. The electron-phonon interaction is considered in the linear Su--Schrieffer--Heeger approximation. Good agreement between analytical formulae and accurate numerical simulation is obtained. The dynamics of polaron formation from different initial conditions is considered. Some features of the wave function evolution, governed by the finite lattice length, are elucidated.

Quantum Problem of Polaron Localization and Justification of the Su—Schrieffer—Heeger Approximation

Vladimir Nikolaevich Likhachev, George A Vinogradov

We consider a polaron localized on a trap in a one-dimensional lattice with a harmonic potential of nearest-neighbor interaction. We study the lattice oscillations in the framework of quantum mechanics and regard the polaron energy as a functional of the wave function. We take the electron—phonon interaction into account in the framework of the linear Su—Schrieffer—Heeger approximation. We show that the results do not differ from the adiabatic consideration if the lattice oscillations are described classically. For the polaron ground state, we obtain approximate analytic expressions that agree well with the results of numerical simulation.

Lattice polaron formation: Effects of nonscreened electron-phonon interaction

Holger Fehske, Jan Loos, Gerhard Wellein

We explore the quasiparticle properties of lattice polarons on the basis of a quite general electron-phonon Hamiltonian with a long-range displacement-type interaction. To treat the dynamical quantum phonons without significant loss of accuracy we adapt an exact Lanczos diagonalization method and compute various static and dynamical quantities, such as the electron-lattice correlation function, the polaron band dispersion, the effective polaron mass, the kinetic energy, the single-particle spectral function, and the optical conductivity, on finite one-dimensional lattices for a wide range of model parameters. We compare the results with those obtained for the standard Holstein model with short-range electron-phonon interaction only.

Polaron on a Lattice with a Trap in the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger Approximation

Vladimir Nikolaevich Likhachev, George A Vinogradov

Abstract The wave function and energy of the ground state of a lattice described by the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger Hamiltonian with a trap were found using three different methods. In the first of these methods, the energy of the ground state was calculated by numerical minimization of the energy functional. In the second, an auxiliary Hamiltonian was constructed, the diagonalization of which determined the energy of the ground state and the wave functions. And in the third, the wave function is completely restored analytically from the asymptotics of the wave function. All the three approaches produced results that agreed with an accuracy of 10–15.

Electron-phonon interaction, localization, and polaron formation in one-dimensional systems

Georgios Kopidakis, C. M. Soukoulis, Eleftherios N. Economou

We present results for the time evolution of a one-dimensional system consisting of an electron, described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian and a harmonic latttice, coupled by a deformation-type potential. We solve numerically the nonlinear system of equations of motion for this model in order to study the effects of varying the electronic effective mass for several initial conditions and coupling strengths. Different types of localized and extended states are formed with features that are absent from the traditional polaronic states and depend very strongly on the initial electronic configuration and effective mass in a very often unexpected manner. We find that, in general, an increase of the initial electronic energy decreases the ability of the system to form localized states. However, a large effective mass favors localized polaron formation for initially localized electrons, but this is not always the case for initially extended electronic states. In the latter case, increasing the effective mass of an electron initially close to the bottom of the band makes localization more difficult, while for an initially highly excited electron, localized polaron formation is possible only when the electronic effective mass and the atomic masses of the lattice become of the same order. Finally, for a small parameter range, we find an impressive recurrence, a periodic and a complete exchange between the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom of a small part of the initial electronic energy.

Polarons and slow quantum phonons

Andreas Alvermann, Holger Fehske, S. A. Trugman

We describe the formation and properties of Holstein polarons in the entire parameter regime. Our presentation focuses on the polaron mass and radius, which we obtain with an improved numerical technique. It is based on the combination of variational exact diagonalization with an improved construction of phonon states, providing results even for the strong coupling adiabatic regime. In particular we can describe the formation of large and heavy adiabatic polarons. A comparison of the polaron mass for the one- and three-dimensional situation explains how the different properties in the static oscillator limit determine the behavior in the adiabatic regime. The transport properties of large and small polarons are characterized by the $f$-sum rule and the optical conductivity. Our calculations are approximation free and have negligible numerical error. This allows us to give a conclusive and impartial description of polaron formation. We finally discuss the implications of our results for situations beyond the Holstein model.

Holstein light quantum polarons on the one-dimensional lattice

O. S. Barišić

The polaron formation is investigated in the intermediate regime of the Holstein model by using an exact diagonalization technique for the one-dimensional infinite lattice. The numerical results for the electron and phonon propagators are compared to the nonadiabatic weak- and strong-coupling perturbation theories, as well as with the harmonic adiabatic approximation. A qualitative explanation of the crossover regime between the self-trapped and free-particle-like behaviors, not well understood previously, is proposed. It is shown that a fine balance of nonadiabatic and adiabatic contributions determines the motion of small polarons, making them light. A comprehensive analysis of spatially and temporally resolved low-frequency lattice correlations that characterize the translationally invariant polaron states is derived. Various behaviors of the polaronic deformation field, ranging from classical adiabatic for strong couplings to quantum nonadiabatic for weak couplings, are discussed.
