Abstract

We study the relation between the eigenfrequencies of the Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates and the eigenvalues of the Jacobian stability matrix in a variational approach that maps the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to a system of equations of motion for the variational parameters. We do this for Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive contact interaction in an external trap and for a simple model of a self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive $1/r$ interaction. The stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and Bogoliubov excitations are calculated using a finite-difference scheme. The Bogoliubov spectra of the ground and excited state of the self-trapped monopolar condensate exhibit a Rydberg-like structure, which can be explained by means of a quantum-defect theory. On the variational side, we treat the problem using an ansatz of time-dependent coupled Gaussian functions combined with spherical harmonics. We first apply this ansatz to a condensate in an external trap without long-range interaction and calculate the excitation spectrum with the help of the time-dependent variational principle. Comparing with the full-numerical results, we find good agreement for the eigenfrequencies of the lowest excitation modes with arbitrary angular momenta. The variational method is then applied to calculate the excitations of the self-trapped monopolar condensates and the eigenfrequencies of the excitation modes are compared.

A nonlinear dynamics approach to Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates

Manuel Kreibich, Holger Cartarius, Jörg Main +1 more

We assume the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a superposition of Gaussian wave packets, with time-dependent complex width parameters, insert it into the mean-field energy functional corresponding to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and apply the time-dependent variational principle. In this way the GPE is mapped onto a system of coupled equations of motion for the complex width parameters, which can be analyzed using the methods of nonlinear dynamics. We perform a stability analysis of the fixed points of the nonlinear system, and demonstrate that the eigenvalues of the Jacobian reproduce the low-lying quantum mechanical Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of a condensate in an axisymmetric trap.

A variational approach to Bogoliubov excitations and dynamics of dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

Manuel Kreibich, Jörg Main, Günter Wunner

We investigate the stability properties and the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates with axial symmetry, especially with dipolar long-range interaction, using both simulations on grids and variational calculations. We present an extended variational ansatz which is applicable for axial symmetry and show that this ansatz can reproduce the lowest eigenfrequencies of the Bogoliubov spectrum, and also the corresponding eigenfunctions. Our variational ansatz is capable of describing the roton instability of pancake-shaped dipolar condensates for arbitrary angular momenta. After investigating the linear regime we apply the ansatz to determine the dynamics and show how the angular collapse is correctly described within the variational framework.

Low Energy Excitations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate: A Time-Dependent Variational Analysis

Víctor M. Pérez‐García, Humberto Michinel, J. I. Cirac +2 more

We solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation by a variational ansatz to calculate the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap. The trial wave function is a Gaussian which allows an essentially analytical treatment of the problem. Our results reproduce numerical calculations over the whole range from small to large particle numbers, and agree exactly with the Stringari results in the strong interaction limit. Excellent agreement is obtained with the recent JILA experiment and predictions for the negative scattering length case are also made.

Analytical calculations on Landau damping of collective modes in anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates

Xiaodong Ma, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We develop an analytical approach for calculating the Landau damping of collective modes in the Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by an anisotropic harmonic potential. Based on a variational ground-state wave function obtained by solving the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation beyond Thomas-Fermi approximation, we solve the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations describing thermal excited quasiparticles and provide divergence-free analytical solutions for the Bogoliubov amplitudes and coupling matrix elements that characterize the interaction between the collective modes and the quasiparticles. With these analytical results we evaluate the Landau damping rates of several collective modes for various anisotropic parameters of the trapping potential in terms of the formulas derived from a time-dependent mean-field theory. In addition, we discuss the dependence of the damping rates on temperature, particle number, trapping frequency, and anisotropic parameter of the system, and compare our theoretical results with experimental and numerical data reported in literature.

Variational methods with coupled Gaussian functions for Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interactions. I. General concept

Stefan Rau, Jörg Main, Günter Wunner

The variational method of coupled Gaussian functions is applied to Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interactions. The time dependence of the condensate is described by dynamical equations for the variational parameters. We present the method and analytically derive the dynamical equations from the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The stability of the solutions is investigated using methods of nonlinear dynamics. The concept presented in this article will be applied to Bose-Einstein condensates with monopolar $1/r$ and dipolar $1/{r}^{3}$ interaction in the subsequent article [S. Rau et al., Phys. Rev. A 82, 023611 (2010)], where we will present a wealth of phenomena obtained using the ansatz with coupled Gaussian functions.

Dynamics of the condensate

C. J. Pethick, H. Smith

The time-dependent behaviour of Bose–Einstein condensed clouds, such as collective modes and the expansion of a cloud when released from a trap, is an important source of information about the physical nature of the condensate. In addition, the spectrum of elementary excitations of the condensate is an essential ingredient in calculations of thermodynamic properties. In this chapter we treat the dynamics of a condensate at zero temperature starting from a time-dependent generalization of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation used in Chapter 6 to describe static properties. From this equation one may derive equations very similar to those of classical hydrodynamics, which we shall use to calculate properties of collective modes. We begin in Sec. 7.1 by describing the time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation and deriving the hydrodynamic equations. We then use the hydrodynamic equations to determine the excitation spectrum of a homogeneous Bose gas (Sec. 7.2). Subsequently, we consider modes in trapped clouds (Sec. 7.3) within the hydrodynamic approach, and also describe the method of collective coordinates and the related variational method. In Sec. 7.4 we consider surface modes of oscillation, which resemble gravity waves on a liquid surface. The variational approach is used in Sec. 7.5 to treat the free expansion of a condensate upon release from a trap. Finally, in Sec. 7.6 we discuss solitons, which are exact one-dimensional solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. General formulation In the previous chapter we saw that the equilibrium structure of the condensate is described by a time-independent Schrödinger equation with a nonlinear contribution to the potential to take into account interactions between particles.
