Low-Temperature Properties of the Fermionic Mixtures with Mass Imbalance in Optical Lattice

Abstract

We study the attractive Hubbard model with mass imbalance to clarify low temperature properties of the fermionic mixtures in the optical lattice. By combining dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we discuss the competition between the superfluid and density wave states at half filling. By calculating the energy and the order parameter for each state, we clarify that the coexisting (supersolid) state, where the density wave and superfluid states are degenerate, is realized in the system. We then determine the phase diagram at finite temperatures.

Superfluid gap formation in a fermionic optical lattice with spin imbalanced populations

Akihisa Koga, Philipp Werner

We investigate the attractive Hubbard model in infinite spatial dimensions at quarter filling. By combining dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the Nambu formalism, we directly deal with the superfluid phase in the population imbalanced system. We discuss the low energy properties in the polarized superfluid state and the pseudogap behavior in the vicinity of the critical temperature.

Competing superfluid and density-wave ground-states of fermionic mixtures with mass imbalance in optical lattices

Tung-Lam Dao, Antoine Georges, Massimo Capone

We study the effect of mass imbalance on the phase diagram of a two-component fermionic mixture with attractive interactions in optical lattices. Using static and dynamical mean-field theories, we show that the pure superfluid phase is stable for all couplings when the mass imbalance is smaller than a limiting value. For larger imbalance, phase separation between a superfluid and a charge-density wave takes place when the coupling exceeds a critical strength. The harmonic trap induces a spatial segregation of the two phases, with a rapid variation of the density at the boundary.

Dynamical structure factor of a fermionic supersolid on an optical lattice

Ettore Vitali, Patrick Kelly, Annette Lopez +2 more

Interfacing unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations with state-of-the-art analytic continuation techniques, we obtain exact numerical results for dynamical density and spin correlations in the attractive Hubbard model, describing a spin-balanced two-dimensional cold Fermi gas on an optical lattice. We focus on half-filling, where on average one fermion occupies each lattice site, and the system displays an intriguing supersolid phase: a superfluid with a checkerboard density modulation. The coexistence of $\text{U}(1)$ broken symmetry and the density modulations makes this regime very challenging and interesting for the calculation of dynamical properties. We compare our unbiased results with state-of-the-art generalized random phase approximation calculations: both approaches agree on a well-defined low-energy Nambu-Goldstone collective mode in the density correlations, while the higher energy structures appear to differ significantly. We also observe an interesting high-energy spin mode. We argue that our results provide a robust benchmark for generalized random phase approximation techniques, which are widely considered to be the method of choice for dynamical correlations in Fermi gases. Also, our calculations yield new physical insight into the high-energy behavior of the dynamical structure factor of the attractive Hubbard model, which is a well known prototype lattice model for superconductors and is a fertile field to target the observation of collective modes in strongly correlated systems.

Phases and collective modes of a hardcore Bose-Fermi mixture in an optical lattice

Subhasis Sinha, K. Sengupta

We obtain the phase diagram of a Bose-Fermi mixture of hardcore spinless bosons and spin-polarized fermions with nearest-neighbor intraspecies interaction and on-site interspecies repulsion in an optical lattice at half filling using a slave-boson mean-field theory. We show that such a system can have four possible phases which are (a) supersolid bosons coexisting with fermions in the Mott state, (b) Mott state of bosons coexisting with fermions in a metallic or charge-density wave state, (c) a metallic fermionic state coexisting with superfluid phase of bosons, and (d) Mott insulating state of fermions and bosons. We chart out the phase diagram of the system and provide analytical expressions for the phase boundaries within mean-field theory. We demonstrate that the transitions between these phases are generically first order with the exception of that between the supersolid and the Mott states which, within mean-field theory, is a continuous quantum phase transition. We also obtain the low-energy collective excitations of the system in these phases. Finally, we study the particle-hole excitations in the Mott insulating phase and use it to determine the dynamical critical exponent $z$ for the supersolid-Mott insulator transition. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Mixtures of fermionic atoms with mass imbalance in optical lattices

Pavol Farkašovský

Abstract We study ground-state properties of ultracold fermionic mixtures with strong mass imbalance in one and two-dimensional optical lattices through large scale numerical simulations of the attractive Falicov-Kimball model in harmonic confining potentials. In the one-dimensional case, we observe a formation of insulating atomic-density-wave domains at low particle fillings and a coexistence of insulating and metallic domains at intermediate and large particle fillings. Moreover, we show how the formation of metallic regions is reflected in the momentum distribution of the light atoms. In two dimensions, we find a rich spectrum of density-wave patterns including the homogeneous distributions, the axial striped distributions, the labyrinthine phases as well as the segregated phases.

Mean-field phase diagram of the Bose-Fermi Hubbard model

Marin Bukov, Lode Pollet

We analyze the ground-state properties of mixtures consisting of scalar bosons and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions using a mean-field treatment of the local boson-fermion interaction on a simple cubic lattice. In the deep superfluid limit of the boson sector and the BCS regime of the fermion sector, we derive BCS-type equations to determine the phase diagram of the system. We find a competition between a charge density wave and a superconducting phase. In the opposite limit, we study the Mott-insulator-to-superfluid transition of the boson sector in the presence of a staggered density-induced alternating potential provided by the fermions, and determine the mean-field transition line. In the two-superfluids phase of the mixture, we restrict to nearest-neighbor-induced interactions between the fermions and consider the extended Hubbard model. We perform a mean-field analysis of the critical temperature for the formation of boson-assisted $s$-, extended ${s}^{\ensuremath{-}}$-, $d$-, and $p$-wave pairs at fermionic half-filling. We compare our results with a recent dynamical mean-field study [P. Anders et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 206401 (2012)].
