Abstract

We present a compelling response of a low-dimensional strongly correlated system to an external perturbation. Using the time-dependent Lanczos method we investigate a nonequilibrium evolution of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, driven by a transient laser pulse. When the system is close to the phase boundary, by tuning the laser frequency and strength, a sustainable charge order enhancement is found that is absent in the Mott insulating phase. We analyze the conditions and investigate possible mechanisms of emerging charge order enhancement. Feasible experimental realizations are proposed.

Photoinduced spin-order destructions in one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Hantao Lu, Shigetoshi Sota, Hiroaki Matsueda +2 more

By employing the time-dependent Lanczos method, the nonequilibrium process of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model under the irradiation of a transient laser pulse is investigated. We show that in the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase, the antiferromagnetic spin correlations are impaired by the photoinduced charge carriers. Near the phase boundary between the SDW and charge-density-wave (CDW) phases, a local enhancement of charge (spin) order that is absent in the original SDW (CDW) phase can be realized with proper laser frequency and strength. The possibility of restoration of spin orders from the CDW phase by optical means is discussed.

New Pathway to Impact Ionization in a Photoexcited One-Dimensional Ionic Hubbard Model

Zhenyu Cheng, Li Yang, Xiang Hu +3 more

Using the time-dependent Lanczos method, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the half-filled one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model, deep within the Mott insulating regime, under the influence of a transient laser pulse. In equilibrium, increasing the staggered potential in the Mott regime reduces the Mott gap and broadens the Hubbard bands, creating favorable conditions for impact ionization. After laser excitation, impact ionization is observed, with its occurrence depending on both the staggered potential and the laser pump frequency. By analyzing the time evolution of the kinetic, ionic, and Coulomb interaction energies, we identify a novel mechanism for impact ionization, in which excess ionic potential energy is converted into additional double occupancy-distinct from the conventional mechanism where excess kinetic energy drives this process. We further reveal that impact ionization arises from interference between excited states driven by photon excitations of the same order. These results present a new pathway for realizing impact ionization in strongly correlated electron systems.

Photoinduced enhancement of bond order in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Can Shao, Hantao Lu, Hong‐Gang Luo +1 more

We investigate the real-time dynamics of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime, when driven by a transient laser pulse. Starting from a wide regime displaying a charge-density wave in equilibrium, a robust photoinduced in-gap state appears in the optical conductivity, depending on the parameters of the pulse. Here, by tuning its conditions, we maximize the overlap of the time-evolving wave function with excited states displaying the elusive bond-ordered wave of this model. Finally, we make a clear connection between the emergence of this order and the formation of the aforementioned in-gap state, suggesting the potential observation of purely electronic (i.e., not associated with a Peierls instability) bond-ordered waves in experiments involving molecular crystals.

Photoinduced in-gap excitations in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Hantao Lu, Can Shao, J. Bonča +2 more

We investigate the time evolution of optical conductivity in the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model driven by a transient laser pulse, by using the time-dependent Lanczos method. Photoinduced in-gap excitations exhibit a qualitatively different structure in the spin-density wave (SDW) in comparison to the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. In the SDW, the origin of a low-energy in-gap excitation is attributed to the even-odd parity of the photoexcited states, while in the CDW an in-gap state is due to confined photogenerated carriers. The signature of the in-gap excitations can be identified as a characteristic oscillation in the time evolution of physical quantities.

Photoexcitation of the one-dimensional extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter-filling

Yupeng Li, Yu-Chang 羽畅 Liu 刘, Yu-Zhuo 玉卓 Zhao 赵 +2 more

Abstract Utilizing the time-dependent Lanczos method, we investigate the photoexcitation dynamics of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling. In equilibrium, it is well established that introducing the nearest-neighbour interaction V into the 1D Peierls–Hubbard model can lead to the formation of Mott–Hubbard excitons, which exhibit a characteristic frequency in the optical conductivity that is lower than the Mott gap. Ultrafast photoexcitation of this model gives rise to a transient metallic state for V < 2, characterized by several features, including a zero-frequency Drude peak in the post-pump optical conductivity, an increase in the density of charge carriers, and enhanced electron hopping between dimers. In contrast, when V ≥ 2, this metallic state is no longer observed, as photoinduced carriers bind to form excitons, thereby inhibiting metallic behavior. These results highlight a parallel between the optical excitation of the 1D extended Peierls–Hubbard model at quarter filling and that of the 1D extended Hubbard model at half filling, suggesting a universal mechanism governing their photoinduced responses.

Analysis of time-resolved single-particle spectrum on the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Can Shao, Takami Tohyama, Hong‐Gang Luo +1 more

We investigate the short-time evolution of the half filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime, driven by a transient laser pump. Combining twisted boundary conditions with the time-dependent Lanczos technique, we obtain snapshots of the single-particle spectral function with high momentum resolution. The analysis of the oscillations of the spectral function shows that its characteristic frequencies are consistent with the magnitudes of the optical gap. Furthermore, we examine the time-evolving spectral structure in the charge-density-wave phase in detail and find that one of the bands in the single-particle spectrum originates from the photoinduced bond-order background.
