Global superfluid phase diagram of a three-component fermion mixture with magnetic ordering

Abstract

We investigate a three-component fermion mixture in the presence of weak attractive interactions. We use a combination of the equation of motion and the Gaussian variational mean-field approaches, which both allow for simultaneous superfluid and magnetic ordering in an unbiased way, and capture the interplay between the two order parameters. This interplay significantly modifies the phase diagram, especially the superfluid-normal phase boundaries. In the close vicinity of the critical temperature and for small chemical potential imbalances, strong particle-hole symmetry breaking leads to a phase diagram similar to the one predicted by Cherng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 130406 (2007)], however, the overall phase diagram is markedly different: additional chemical potential-driven first- and second-order transitions and triple points emerge as well as more exotic second-order multicritical points, and bicritical lines with $\text{O}(2,2)$ symmetry. We identify the terms which are necessary to capture this complex phase diagram in a Ginzburg-Landau approach, and determine the corresponding coefficients.

Phase diagram of two-component mean-field Bose mixtures

Oskar Stachowiak, Paweł Jakubczyk

Abstract We revisit the structure of the phase diagram of the two-component mean-field Bose mixture at finite temperatures, considering both the cases of attractive and repulsive interspecies interactions. In particular, we analyze the evolution of the phase diagram upon driving the system towards collapse and point out its distinctive features in this limit. We provide analytical insights into the global structure of the phase diagram and the properties of the phase transitions between the normal phase and the phases involving Bose–Einstein condensates. Inter alia we analytically demonstrate that for sufficiently weak interspecies interactions a 12 the system generically exhibits a line of quadruple points but has no triple nor tricritical points in the phase diagram spanned by the chemical potentials µ 1, µ 2 and temperature T. In contrast, for sufficiently large, positive values of a 12, the system displays both triple and tricritical points but no quadruple points. As pointed out in recent studies, in addition to the phase transitions involving condensation, the mixture may be driven through a liquid–gas type transition, and we clarify the conditions for its occurrence. We finally discuss the impact of interaction- and mass-imbalance on the phase diagram of the mixture.

Magnetism and domain formation in SU(3)-symmetric multi-species Fermi mixtures

Abstract. We study the phase diagram of an SU(3)-symmetric mixture of three-component ultracold fermions with attractive interactions in an optical lattice, including the additional effect on the mixture of an effective three-body constraint induced by three-body losses. We address the properties of the system in D ≥ 2 by using dynamical mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo techniques. The phase diagram of the model shows a strong interplay between magnetism and superfluidity. In the absence of the three-body constraint (no losses), the system undergoes a phase transition from a color superfluid phase to a trionic phase, which shows additional particle density modulations at half-filling. Away from the particle-hole symmetric point the color superfluid phase is always spontaneously magnetized, leading to the formation of different color superfluid domains in systems where the total number of particles of each species is conserved. This can be seen as the SU(3) symmetric realization of a more general tendency to phase-separation in three-component Fermi mixtures. The three-body constraint strongly disfavors the trionic phase, stabilizing a (fully magnetized) color superfluid also at strong coupling. With increasing temperature we observe a transition to a non-magnetized SU(3) Fermi liquid phase.ar X iv

Superfluidity and Magnetism in Multicomponent Ultracold Fermions

R. W. Cherng, Gil Refael, Eugene Demler

We study the interplay between superfluidity and magnetism in a multicomponent gas of ultracold fermions. Ward-Takahashi identities constrain possible mean-field states describing order parameters for both pairing and magnetization. The structure of global phase diagrams arises from competition among these states as functions of anisotropies in chemical potential, density, or interactions. They exhibit first and second order phase transition as well as multicritical points, metastability regions, and phase separation. We comment on experimental signatures in ultracold atoms.

Critical entropies and magnetic-phase-diagram analysis of ultracold three-component fermionic mixtures in optical lattices

Andrii Sotnikov

We study theoretically many-body equilibrium magnetic phases and corresponding thermodynamic characteristics of ultracold three-component fermionic mixtures in optical lattices described by the SU(3)-symmetric single-band Hubbard model. Our analysis is based on the generalization of the exact diagonalization solver for multicomponent mixtures that is used in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory. It allows us to obtain a finite-temperature phase diagram with the corresponding transition lines to magnetically ordered phases at filling one particle per site (1/3 band filling) in simple cubic lattice geometry. Based on the developed theoretical approach, we also attain the necessary accuracy to study the entropy dependence in the vicinity of magnetically ordered phases that allows us to make important predictions for ongoing and future experiments aiming to approach and study long-range-order phases in ultracold atomic mixtures.

Magnetic phases and transitions of the two-species Bose-Hubbard model

Stephen Powell

A model of two-species bosons moving on the sites of a lattice is studied at nonzero temperature, focusing on magnetic order and superfluid-insulator transitions. First, Landau theory is used to find the general structure of the phase diagram and in particular to demonstrate the presence of first-order transitions and hysteresis in the vicinity of a multicritical point. Second, an explicit thermodynamic phase diagram is calculated using an approach based on a field-theoretical description of the Bose-Hubbard model, which incorporates the crucial effects of particle-number fluctuations. The maximum transition temperature to a magnetically ordered Mott insulator is found to be limited by the presence of the superfluid phase.
