Abstract

Frustration-free (FF) spin chains have a property that their ground state minimizes all individual terms in the chain Hamiltonian. We ask how entangled the ground state of a FF quantum spin-s chain with nearest-neighbor interactions can be for small values of s. While FF spin-1/2 chains are known to have unentangled ground states, the case s=1 remains less explored. We propose the first example of a FF translation-invariant spin-1 chain that has a unique highly entangled ground state and exhibits some signatures of a critical behavior. The ground state can be viewed as the uniform superposition of balanced strings of left and right brackets separated by empty spaces. Entanglement entropy of one half of the chain scales as 1/2 log n+O(1), where n is the number of spins. We prove that the energy gap above the ground state is polynomial in 1/n. The proof relies on a new result concerning statistics of Dyck paths which might be of independent interest.

Deformed Fredkin spin chain with extensive entanglement

Olof Salberger, Takuma Udagawa, Zhao Zhang +3 more

Abstract We introduce a new spin chain which is a deformation of the Fredkin spin chain and has a phase transition between bounded and extensive entanglement entropy scaling. In this chain, spins have a local interaction of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian is frustration-free and its ground state can be described analytically as a weighted superposition of Dyck paths that depends on a deformation parameter t . In the purely spin 1/2 case, whenever t ≠ 1 , the entanglement entropy obeys an area law: it is bounded from above by a constant, when the size of the block n increases. When a local color degree of freedom is introduced and t > 1 the entanglement entropy increases linearly, while for t < 1 an area law is obeyed. The half-chain entanglement entropy is tightly bounded by n log ⁡ s where 2 n is the length of the chain, and s is the number of colors. Our chain fosters a new example for a significant boost to entropy and for the existence of the associated critical rainbow phase where the entanglement entropy scales with volume that discovered by Zhang, Ahmadain and Klich ( Proc. Natl Acad. Sci 2017).

Entanglement and correlation functions of the quantum Motzkin spin-chain

Ramis Movassagh

We present exact results on the exactly solvable spin chain of Bravyi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 207202 (2012)]. This model is a spin one chain and has a Hamiltonian that is local and translationally invariant in the bulk. It has a unique (frustration free) ground state with an energy gap that is polynomially small in the system’s size (2n). The half-chain entanglement entropy of the ground state is 12logn+const.[Bravyi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 207202 (2012)]. Here we first write the Hamiltonian in the standard spin-basis representation. We prove that at zero temperature, the magnetization is along the z-direction, i.e., ⟨sx⟩=⟨sy⟩=0 (everywhere on the chain). We then analytically calculate ⟨sz⟩ and the two-point correlation functions of sz. By analytically diagonalizing the reduced density matrices, we calculate the Schmidt rank, von Neumann, and Rényi entanglement entropies for the following: 1. Any partition of the chain into two pieces (not necessarily in the middle) and 2. L consecutive spins centered in the middle. Further, we identify entanglement Hamiltonians (Eqs. (49) and (59)). We prove a small lemma (Lemma (1)) on the combinatorics of lattice paths using the reflection principle to relate and calculate the Motzkin walk “height” to spin expected values. We also calculate the, closely related (scaled), correlation functions of Brownian excursions. The known features of this model are summarized in a table in Sec. I.

The pair-flip model: a very entangled translationally invariant spin chain

Libor Caha, Daniel Nagaj

Investigating translationally invariant qudit spin chains with a low local dimension, we ask what is the best possible tradeoff between the scaling of the entanglement entropy of a large block and the inverse-polynomial scaling of the spectral gap. Restricting ourselves to Hamiltonians with a "rewriting" interaction, we find the pair-flip model, a family of spin chains with nearest neighbor, translationally invariant, frustration-free interactions, with a very entangled ground state and an inverse-polynomial spectral gap. For a ground state in a particular invariant subspace, the entanglement entropy across a middle cut scales as $\log n$ for qubits (it is equivalent to the XXX model), while for qutrits and higher, it scales as $\sqrt{n}$. Moreover, we conjecture that this particular ground state can be made unique by adding a small translationally-invariant perturbation that favors neighboring letter pairs, adding a small amount of frustration, while retaining the entropy scaling.

Gapped and gapless phases of frustration-free spin-1/2 chains

Sergey B. Bravyi, David Gosset

We consider a family of translation-invariant quantum spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions and derive necessary and sufficient conditions for these systems to be gapped in the thermodynamic limit. More precisely, let $ψ$ be an arbitrary two-qubit state. We consider a chain of $n$ qubits with open boundary conditions and Hamiltonian $H_n(ψ)$ which is defined as the sum of rank-1 projectors onto $ψ$ applied to consecutive pairs of qubits. We show that the spectral gap of $H_n(ψ)$ is upper bounded by $1/(n-1)$ if the eigenvalues of a certain two-by-two matrix simply related to $ψ$ have equal non-zero absolute value. Otherwise, the spectral gap is lower bounded by a positive constant independent of $n$ (depending only on $ψ$). A key ingredient in the proof is a new operator inequality for the ground space projector which expresses a monotonicity under the partial trace. This monotonicity property appears to be very general and might be interesting in its own right. As an extension of our main result, we obtain a complete classification of gapped and gapless phases of frustration-free translation-invariant spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor interactions.

Quantum phase transition from bounded to extensive entanglement entropy in a frustration-free spin chain

Zhao Zhang, Amr A. Ahmadain, Israel Klich

We introduce a continuous family of frustration-free Hamiltonians with exactly solvable ground states. We prove that the {ground state of our model is non-degenerate and exhibits} a novel quantum phase transition from bounded entanglement entropy to a massively entangled state with volume entropy scaling. The ground state may be interpreted as a deformation away from the uniform superposition of colored Motzkin paths, showed by Movassagh and Shor to have a large (square-root) but sub-extensive scaling of entanglement into a state with an extensive entropy.

Finite-size gap, magnetization, and entanglement of deformed Fredkin spin chain

Takuma Udagawa, Hosho Katsura

Abstract We investigate ground- and excited-state properties of the deformed Fredkin spin chain proposed by Salberger, Zhang, Klich, Korepin, and the authors. This model is a one-parameter deformation of the Fredkin spin chain, whose Hamiltonian is 3-local and translationally invariant in the bulk. The model is frustration-free and its unique ground state can be expressed as a weighted superposition of colored Dyck paths. We focus on the case where the deformation parameter t > 1 . By using a variational method, we prove that the finite-size gap decays at least exponentially with increasing the system size. We prove that the magnetization in the ground state is along the z -direction, namely 〈 s x 〉 = 〈 s y 〉 = 0 , and show that the z -component 〈 s z 〉 exhibits a domain-wall structure. We then study the entanglement properties of the chain. In particular, we derive upper and lower bounds for the von Neumann and Rényi entropies, and entanglement spectrum for any bipartition of the chain.
