Abstract

For a system of two identical fermions and one distinguishable particle interacting via a short-range potential with a large $s$-wave scattering length, the Efimov trimers and Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers exist in different regimes of mass ratio. The Efimov trimers are known to exhibit a discrete scaling invariance, while the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers feature a continuous one. We point out that a third type of trimer, ``crossover trimers,'' exists universally regardless of short-range details of the potential. These crossover trimers have neither discrete nor continuous scaling invariance. We show that the crossover trimers continuously connect the discrete and continuous scaling regimes as the mass ratio and the scattering length are varied. We identify the regions for the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers, Efimov trimers, crossover trimers, and nonuniversal trimers in terms of the mass ratio and the $s$-wave scattering length by investigating the scaling property and universality (i.e., independence on short-range details) of the trimers.

Theoretical Study on Efimov Physics in Ultracold Atoms

晋平 遠藤

The Efimov states are three-body bound states, which appear universally when the s-wave scattering length between the particles is resonantly large.Since the Efimov states and their characteristic discrete scale invariance have recently been observed in ultracold atoms, the Efimov states and their associated few-body phenomena have attracted widening interest both theoretically and experimentally. In this thesis, I theoretically study the Efimov physics and related phenomena, focusing on the following three topics: (i) Universal three-body physics for a mass-imbalanced Fermi system (Chapter 3).For a system of two identical spinless (i.e., spin-polarized) fermions and one distinguishable particle which interact via a short-range potential with a large s-wave scattering length, two classes of universal three-body bound states have been known to appear in different regimes of the mass ratio: the Efimov trimers and the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers, which feature the discrete and continuous scale invariance, respectively.I have found the third class of universal three-body bound states, which I call the "crossover trimers".The crossover trimers show neither the discrete nor continuous scale invariance.I have identified the regions of these three classes of trimers as a function of the mass ratio and the s-wave scattering length, and shown that the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers and the Efimov trimers can continuously transform into each other via the crossover trimers as the mass ratio and the s-wave scattering length are varied.Owing to the presence of the crossover trimers, the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers dissociate into a particle and a dimer when the s-wave scattering length is varied, inducing resonances in the particle-dimer scattering.I have calculated the elastic particle-dimer scattering lengths in arbitrary angular-momentum channels, and shown that the particle-dimer resonances indeed occur. From the resonance positions, I have found accurate values of the critical mass ratios at which the Kartavtsev-Malykh trimers in the higher angular-momentum channels appear. (ii) Universal three-body parameter (Chapter 4).In the Efimov physics, the three-body parameter fixes the short-range three-body phase and hence the scale of the energy spectrum.Until quite recently, it has been widely held that the threebody parameter should depend on the short-range part of the inter-atomic potential, and hence vary almost randomly between different atomic species and hyperfine states. However, mounting evidence in recent experiments suggests otherwise. While some theoretical studies have succeeded in reproducing the universal behavior in the three-body parameter, the underlying physical mechanism has remained unclear and controversial. In this thesis, I elucidate the physical origin of the universal three-body parameter.I propose that a non-adiabatic deformation of the three-body wave function induced by a universal two-body correlation results in a universal three-body repulsion, which prevents three particles from coming close and renders the three-body parameter universal. This mechanism is verified by reproducing the universal three-body repulsion with a simple model wave function. The mechanism found here suggests that the three-body parameter would also be universal for non-van der Waals types of potentials. For various classes of deep two-body potentials, it is shown that the effective range is the relevant length scale to characterize the two-body correlation and sets the three-body parameter.Depending on the shape of the two-body correlation, there

Shallow trimers of two identical fermions and one particle in resonant regimes

Pascal Naidon, Ludovic Pricoupenko, Christiane H. Schmickler

We consider two identical fermions interacting in the p-wave channel. Each fermion also interacts with another particle in the vicinity of an s-wave resonance. We find that in addition to the Kartavtsev-Malykh universal trimer states resulting from the s-wave particle-fermion interaction, the fermion-fermion p-wave interaction induces one or two shallow trimers in a large domain of the control parameters, including a borromean regime where the ground-state trimer exists in the absence of dimer at any mass ratio between the fermions and the particle. A generic picture of the trimer spectrum emerges from this work in terms of the low-energy parameters of the interactions.

Efimov Physics and Connections to Nuclear Physics

Alejandro Kievsky, M. Gattobigio, Luca Girlanda +1 more

Physical systems characterized by a shallow two-body bound or virtual state are governed at large distances by continuous scale invariance, which is broken into discrete scale invariance when three or more particles come into play. This symmetry induces a universal behavior for different systems that is independent of the details of the underlying interaction and rooted in the smallness of the ratio ℓ/ a B ≪ 1, where the length a B is associated with the binding energy of the two-body system [Formula: see text], and ℓ is the natural length given by the interaction range. Efimov physics refers to this universal behavior, which is often hidden by the onset of system-specific nonuniversal effects. In this review, we identify universal properties by providing an explicit link of physical systems to their unitary limit, in which a B → ∞, and we show that nuclear systems belong to this class of universality.

Efimov physics and universal trimers in spin-orbit-coupled ultracold atomic mixtures

Zhe-Yu Shi, Hui Zhai, Xiaoling Cui

We study the two-body and three-body bound states in ultracold atomic mixtures with one of the atoms subjected to an isotropic spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We consider a system of two identical fermions interacting with one SO-coupled atom. It is found that there can exist two types of three-body bound states, Efimov trimers and universal trimers. The Efimov trimers are energetically less favored by the SO coupling, which will finally merge into the atom-dimer threshold as increasing the SO-coupling strength. Nevertheless, these trimers exhibit a discrete scaling law incorporating the SO-coupling effect. On the other hand, the universal trimers are more favored by the SO coupling. They can be induced at negative $s$-wave scattering lengths and with smaller mass ratios than those without SO coupling. These results are obtained by both the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and exact solutions from three-body equations.

Universality in Efimov-associated tetramers in He4

Emiko Hiyama, M. Kamimura

We calculated, using seven realistic $^{4}\mathrm{He}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ potentials in the literature, the Efimov spectra of the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimer and tetramer and analyzed the universality of the systems. The three-(four-)body Schr\"odinger equations were solved fully nonadiabatically with the high-precision calculation method employed in our previous work on the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimer and tetramer [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022502 (2012); Phys. Rev. A 85, 062505 (2012)]. We found the following universality in the four-boson system: (i) The critical scattering lengths at which the tetramer ground and excited states couple to the four-body threshold are independent of the choice of the two-body realistic potentials in spite of the difference in the short-range details and do not contradict the corresponding values observed in the experiments in ultracold alkali-metal atoms when scaled with the van der Waals length ${r}_{\mathrm{vdW}}$, and (ii) the four-body hyperradial potential has a repulsive barrier at the four-body hyperradius ${R}_{4}\ensuremath{\approx}3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{r}_{\mathrm{vdW}}$, which prevents the four particles from getting close together to explore nonuniversal features of the interactions at short distances. This result is an extension of the universality in Efimov trimers that the appearance of the repulsive barrier at the three-body hyperradius ${R}_{3}\ensuremath{\approx}2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{r}_{\mathrm{vdW}}$ makes the critical scattering lengths independent of the short-range details of the interactions as reported in the literature and also in the present work for the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ trimer with the realistic potentials.
