Abstract

We study, by means of exact-diagonalization techniques, the ground state of a few-fermion system with strong short-range repulsive interactions trapped by a harmonic potential in one spatial dimension. Even when the ground-state density profile displays, at strong coupling, very well pronounced Wigner oscillations with a $4{k}_{\mathrm{F}}$ periodicity, the pair-correlation function does not show any signature of Wigner-molecule-type correlations. For the sake of comparison, we present also numerical results for few-electron systems with Coulomb interactions, demonstrating that their ground state at strong coupling is, on the contrary, a Wigner molecule.

Wigner crystal versus fermionization for one-dimensional Hubbard models with and without long-range interactions

Zhihao Xu, Linhu Li, Gao Xianlong +1 more

The ground state properties of the Hubbard model with or without long-range interactions in the regime with strongly repulsive on-site interactions are investigated by means of the exact diagonalization method. We show that the appearance of N-crests in the density profile of a trapped N-fermion system is a natural result of 'fermionization' between antiparallel-spin fermions in the strongly repulsive limit and cannot be taken as the only signature of the Wigner crystal phase, as the static structure factor does not show any signature of crystallization. In contrast, both the density distribution and the static structure factor of the Hubbard model with strong long-range interactions display clear signatures of the Wigner crystal phase. Our results indicate the important role of long-range interaction in the formation of the Wigner crystal phase.

Ground-state properties of few dipolar bosons in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap

F. Deuretzbacher, Jonas C. Cremon, S. M. Reimann

We study the ground state of few bosons with repulsive dipole-dipole interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap by means of the exact diagonalization method. Up to three interaction regimes are found, depending on the strength of the dipolar interaction and the ratio of transverse to axial oscillator lengths: a regime where the dipolar Bose gas resembles a system of weakly $\ensuremath{\delta}$-interacting bosons, a second regime where the bosons are fermionized, and a third regime where the bosons form a Wigner crystal. In the first two regimes, the dipole-dipole potential can be replaced by a $\ensuremath{\delta}$ potential. In the crystalline state, the overlap between the localized wave packets is strongly reduced and all the properties of the boson system equal those of its fermionic counterpart. The transition from the Tonks-Girardeau gas to the solidlike state is accompanied by a rapid increase of the interaction energy and a considerable change of the momentum distribution, which we trace back to the different short-range correlations in the two interaction regimes.

Wigner crystal induced by dipole-dipole interaction in one-dimensional optical lattices

Zhihao Xu, Shu Chen

We demonstrate that the static structure factor, momentum distribution, and density distribution provide clear signatures of the emergence of Wigner crystal for the fermionic dipolar gas with strongly repulsive dipole-dipole interactions trapped in one-dimensional optical lattices. Our numerical evidences are based on the exact diagonalization of the microscopic effective lattice Hamiltonian of few particles interacting with long-range interactions. As a comparison, we also study the system with only nearest-neighbor interactions, which displays quite different behavior from the dipolar system in the regime of strong repulsion.

Exactly Solvable System of One-Dimensional Trapped Bosons with Short- and Long-Range Interactions

Mathieu Beau, S. M. Pittman, G. E. Astrakharchik +1 more

We introduce a model of trapped bosons with contact interactions as well as Coulomb repulsion or gravitational attraction in one spatial dimension. We find the exact ground-state energy and many-body wave function. The density profile and the pair-correlation function are sampled using Monte Carlo method and show a rich variety of regimes with crossovers between them. Strong attraction leads to a trapped McGuire quantum soliton. Weak repulsion results in an incompressible Laughlin-like fluid with flat density, well reproduced by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with long-range interactions. Stronger repulsion induces Friedel oscillations and the eventual formation of a Wigner crystal.

Emergence of Wigner molecules in one-dimensional systems of repulsive fermions under harmonic confinement

Saeed H. Abedinpour, Marco Polini, Gao Xianlong +1 more

A Bethe-ansatz spin-density functional approach is developed to evaluate the ground-state density profile in a system of repulsively interacting spin-$1∕2$ fermions inside a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic well. The approach allows for the formation of antiferromagnetic quasiorder with increasing coupling strength and reproduces with high accuracy the exact solution that is available for the two-fermion system.

Few strongly interacting ultracold fermions in one-dimensional traps of different shapes

Daniel Pęcak, Tomasz Sowiński

The ground-state properties of a few spin-1/2 fermions with different masses and interacting via short-range contact forces are studied within an exact diagonalization approach. It is shown that, depending on the shape of the external confinement, different scenarios of the spatial separation between components manifested by specific shapes of the density profiles can be obtained in the strong interaction limit. We find that the ground-state of the system undergoes a specific transition between orderings when the confinement is changed adiabatically from a uniform box to a harmonic oscillator shape. We study the properties of this transition in the framework of the finite-size scaling method adopted to few-body systems.
