Phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field

Abstract

Ground-state phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field has three distinct phases: topological, charge-condensed, and vortex-condensed states. To study it we consider an implicit local order parameter characterizing the transition between the topological and charge-condensed phases, and sample it using continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations. The corresponding second-order transition line is obtained by finite-size scaling analysis of this order parameter. Symmetry breaking between charges and vortices along the first-order transition line is also observed, and our numerical result shows that the end point of the first-order transition line is located at ${h}_{x}^{(c)}={h}_{z}^{(c)}=0.418(2)$.

Low-energy effective theory of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field

Julien Vidal, Sébastien Dusuel, Kai Phillip Schmidt

We determine analytically the phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field which displays three distinct regions. Our study relies on two high-order perturbative expansions in the strong- and weak-field limits, as well as a large-spin analysis. Calculations in the topological phase establish a quasiparticle picture for the anyonic excitations. We obtain two second-order transition lines that merge with a first-order line, giving rise to a multicritical point as recently suggested by numerical simulations. We compute the values of the corresponding critical fields and exponents that drive the closure of the gap. We also give the one-particle dispersions of the anyonic quasiparticles inside the topological phase.

Topological multicritical point in the phase diagram of the toric code model and three-dimensional lattice gauge Higgs model

I. S. Tupitsyn, Alexei Kitaev, Nikolay V. Prokof'ev +1 more

We construct a mapping between the two-dimensional toric code model in external magnetic fields, ${h}_{z}$ and ${h}_{x}$, and the three-dimensional classical Ising system with plaquette interactions, which is equivalent to the three-dimensional ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge Higgs model with anisotropy between the imaginary time and spatial directions. The isotropic limit of the latter model was studied using Monte Carlo simulations on large (up to ${60}^{3}$) lattices in order to determine the stability of the topological phase against generic magnetic field perturbations and to resolve fine details of the phase diagram. We find that the topological phase is bounded by second-order transition lines, which merge into a first-order line at what appears to be a multicritical point arising from the competition between the Higgs and confinement transitions in the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge system. An effective field theory for this type of multicritical point (if one actually exists) is not known. Our results have potential applications to frustrated magnets, quantum computation, lattice gauge models in particle physics, and critical phenomena.

Ising order parameter and topological phase transitions: Toric code in a uniform magnetic field

Mohammad Hossein Zarei

A quantum Ising model in a transverse field is of the simplest quantum many-body systems used for studying universal properties of quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, it is well known that such phase transitions can be mapped to topological phase transitions in toric code models. Therefore, one can expect that well-known properties of the transverse Ising model are used for characterizing topological phase transitions in toric code models. In this paper, we consider the magnetization of the Ising model and show, while it is a local order parameter, it is mapped to a nonlocal order parameter on the topological side. Consequently, we introduce a string order parameter for topological phase transitions in toric code models defined on different lattices with different dimensions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Since such a string order parameter is dual of the Ising order parameter with well-known properties, it leads to a topological (nonlocal) characterization of phase transition in the toric code model in uniform field. Our results show that although topological phase transitions do not follow a symmetry-breaking mechanism, it might still be possible to use concepts of symmetry-breaking phase transitions for topological ones by finding suitable mappings.

Quantum robustness of the toric code in a parallel field on the honeycomb and triangular lattice

Viktor Kott, Matthias Mühlhauser, Jan Alexander Koziol +1 more

We investigate the quantum robustness of the topological order in the toric code on the honeycomb lattice in the presence of a uniform parallel field. For a field in z z -direction, the low-energy physics is in the flux-free sector and can be mapped to the transverse-field Ising model on the honeycomb lattice. One finds a second-order quantum phase transition in the 3D Ising ^\star ⋆ universality class for both signs of the field. The same is true for a postive field in x x -direction where an analogue mapping in the charge-free sector yields a ferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice and the phase transition is still 3D Ising ^\star ⋆ . In contrast, for negative x x -field, the charge-free sector is mapped to the highly frustrated antiferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice which is known to host a quantum phase transition in the 3D XY ^\star ⋆ universality class. Further, the charge-free sector does not always contain the low-energy physics for negative x x -fields and a first-order phase transition to the polarized phase in the charge-full sector takes place at larger negative field values. We quantify the location of this transition by comparing quantum Monte Carlo simulations and high-field series expansions. The full extension of the topological phase in the presence of x x - and z z -fields is determined by perturbative linked-cluster expansions using a full graph decomposition. Extrapolating the high-order series of the charge and the flux gap allows to estimate critical exponents of the gap closing. This analysis indicates that the topological order breaks down by critical lines of 3D Ising ^\star ⋆ and 3D XY ^\star ⋆ type with interesting potential multi-critical crossing points. All findings for the toric code on the honeycomb lattice can be transferred exactly to the toric code on the triangular lattice.

Breakdown of a perturbed $\boldsymbol{\mathbbm{Z}}_N$ topological phase

Marc Daniel Schulz, Sébastien Dusuel, Román Orús +2 more

We studied the robustness of a generalized Kitaev's toric code with degrees of freedom in the presence of local perturbations. For N = 2, this model reduces to the conventional toric code in a uniform magnetic field. A quantitative analysis was performed for the perturbed toric code by applying a combination of high-order series expansions and variational techniques. We found strong evidence for first- and second-order phase transitions between topologically ordered and polarized phases. Most interestingly, our results also indicate the existence of topological multi-critical points in the phase diagram.

String order parameters for symmetry fractionalization in an enriched toric code

José Garre-Rubio, Mohsin Iqbal, David T. Stephen

We study a simple model of symmetry-enriched topological order obtained by decorating a toric code model with lower-dimensional symmetry-protected topological states. We show that the symmetry fractionalization in this model can be characterized by string order parameters, and that these signatures are robust under the effects of external fields and interactions, up to the phase transition point. This extends the recent proposal of Garre-Rubio and Iblisdir [New J. Phys. 21, 113016 (2019)] beyond the setting of fixed-point tensor network states, and solidifies string order parameters as a useful tool to characterize and detect symmetry fractionalization. In addition to this, we observe how the condensation of an anyon that fractionalizes a symmetry forces that symmetry to spontaneously break, and we give a proof of this in the framework of projected entangled pair states. This phenomenon leads to a notable change in the phase diagram of the toric code in parallel magnetic fields
