Abstract

We propose a ground-state ansatz for the Ohmic spin-boson model that improves upon the variational treatment of Silbey and Harris for biased systems in the scaling limit. In particular, it correctly captures the smooth crossover behavior expected for the ground-state magnetization when moving between the delocalized and localized regimes of the model, a feature that the variational treatment is unable to properly reproduce, while it also provides a lower ground-state energy estimate in the crossover region. We further demonstrate the validity of our intuitive ground-state by showing that it leads to predictions in excellent agreement with those derived from a nonperturbative Bethe-ansatz technique. Finally, recasting our ansatz in the form of a generalized polaron transformation, we are able to explore the dissipative two-state dynamics beyond weak system-environment coupling within an efficient time-local master equation formalism.

Generalized Polaron Ansatz for the Ground State of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model: An Analytic Theory of the Localization Transition

Alex W. Chin, Javier Prior, Susana F. Huelga +1 more

The sub-Ohmic spin-boson model possesses a quantum phase transition at zero temperature between a localized and a delocalized phase, whose properties have so far only been extracted by numerical approaches. Here we present an extension of the Silbey-Harris variational polaron ansatz which allows us to develop an analytical theory which correctly describes a continuous transition with mean-field exponents for 0<s<0.5. The critical properties, couplings, and observables we obtain show excellent agreement with existing numerical results, and we give an intuitive microscopic description of the changing correlations between the system and bath which suppress the spin coherence and drive the transition.

An efficient variational polaron master equation for non-Markovian spin-boson dynamics: Transformed initial states and general observables

Chien-Chang Chen, Hsi-Sheng Goan

We investigate the effects of initial states on the dynamics of a quantum spin-boson model using an efficient variational polaron master equation approach. The transformation of a factorized system-environment initial state into the variational polaron frame introduces inhomogeneous terms in the master equation, essential for accurately describing non-Markovian dynamics beyond the weak coupling regime. To efficiently account for these effects, we formulate the dynamics in an extended auxiliary Liouville space, converting the resulting integro-differential equations into coupled ordinary differential equations. We further introduce a simplified variational polaron technique for computing the time evolution of expectation values of general observables, including those that do not commute with the polaron transformation, overcoming a major limitation of previous approaches and enabling the unified treatment of coherence and population dynamics. The effects of transformed initial states generated from arbitrary factorized initial states are systematically characterized through expectation values and trace-distance analysis, providing insight into the associated bath-relaxation dynamics over a broad range of tunneling amplitudes, temperatures, and coupling strengths. Comparison with the weak-coupling master equation reveals a delay phenomenon associated with multi-bath-quanta processes, pronounced at intermediate coupling strengths and tunneling amplitudes. We further show that coherent superposition initial states induce stronger nonequilibrium effects than localized states, with inhomogeneous terms playing a crucial role in the short-time dynamics. The proposed formalism applies to both undriven and resonantly driven spin-boson models, providing a computationally efficient framework for open quantum-system dynamics with arbitrary factorized initial states and general physical observables.

Entanglement evolution and quantum phase transition of biased s=1/2 spin-boson model

Chunjian Zhao, Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

The ground state and the spectral structure of lower-lying excited states of a dissipative two-level system coupled to a sub-Ohmic bath (s = 1/2) with nonzero bias have been studied using the unitary transformation method. By calculating the ground-state entanglement entropy, the ground-state average of σ(z)(G), and the static susceptibility of the two-level system, we explore the nature of the transition (crossover) between the delocalized and localized state of the two-level system. Furthermore, we calculate the time-dependent expectation (σ(z)(t)) and the time evolution of the entanglement entropy to show that, when the system undergoes a transition (crossover) from the delocalized to the localized state, the time evolution of the two-level system changes from coherent to decoherent dynamics.

A "squeezed polaron" variational wavefunction for the spin boson model

Diego Barberena, Nigel Cooper

The localization transition of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model generates boson bath correlations that are, at low frequencies, analytically inaccessible to standard coherent-state-polaron variational ansatzes. In this paper, we introduce a ``squeezed polaron'' wavefunction incorporating generic Gaussian boson-boson correlations induced by the spin impurity. This gives the correct critical power-law scaling of bath observables near the localization transition together with a systematically improved ground state energy and a more accurate determination of the critical coupling. Our wavefunction captures the correct mean-field nature of the transition in the deep sub-Ohmic region. It also displays non-mean-field critical exponents in the shallow sub-Ohmic regime. Using the squeezed polaron as a starting point, we derive scattering phase shifts for bosons, and show how they encode the emergent energy scale that vanishes at the localization transition.

Beyond the Quantum Regression Theorem in Variational Polaron Master Equations: from Ohmic to Super-Ohmic Environments

Matias Bundgaard-Nielsen, Jake Iles-Smith

While the quantum regression theorem (QRT) is the standard tool for computing multi-time correlation functions in open quantum systems, it relies on system-bath separability and an environment that remains in equilibrium, assumptions that are violated once dynamical correlations develop. Using the projection operator formalism, we derive an extension to the QRT that explicitly incorporates these correlation-induced corrections, enabling us to capture multi-time correlation functions in non-Markovian regimes. We apply this framework to the variational polaron master equation for the spin-boson model in ohmic and super-ohmic regimes, where the polaron transformation mixes system-bath degrees of freedom to produce a non-thermal effective environment. Benchmarking against numerically exact tensor-network simulations, we demonstrate quantitative agreement for single- and two-time observables, including linear-response spectra, even at strong coupling. Our approach broadens the reach of analytic master equations to multi-time observables in strong-coupling and non-Markovian regimes, where environmental memory effects and system-bath correlations are crucial.

Improved Silbey-Harris polaron ansatz for the spin-boson model

Shu He, Liwei Duan, Qing‐Hu Chen

In this paper, the well-known Silbey-Harris (SH) polaron ansatz for the spin-boson model is improved by adding orthogonal displaced Fock states. The obtained results for the ground state in all baths converge very quickly within finite displaced Fock states and corresponding SH results are corrected considerably. Especially for the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model, the converging results are obtained for $0<s<1/2$ in the fourth-order correction and very accurate critical coupling strengths of the quantum phase transition are achieved. Converging magnetization in the biased spin-boson model is also arrived at. Since the present improved SH ansatz can yield very accurate, even almost exact results, it should have wide applications and extensions in various spin-boson model and related fields.
