Nonequilibrium symmetry-protected topological order: Emergence of semilocal Gibbs ensembles

Maurizio Fagotti, Vanja Marić, Lenart Zadnik

A generic nonequilibrium quantum system relaxes locally into a state resembling a thermal one even when isolated from the environment. In one-dimensional systems at finite temperature, ordered phases are generally excluded. Consequently, although symmetry-protected topological order may be present at zero temperature, its emergence at late times is not expected. This paper uncovers a mechanism that allows symmetry-protected topological order to emerge away from equilibrium for arbitrarily long times. It is based on the existence of hidden (semilocal) symmetries associated with operators that represent local observables only in a symmetry-restricted Hilbert space.

QUANTUM DYNAMICS WITH AN ENSEMBLE OF HAMILTONIANS

Armin Rahmani

We review recent progress in the nonequilibrium dynamics of thermally isolated many-body quantum systems, evolving with an ensemble of Hamiltonians as opposed to deterministic evolution with a single time-dependent Hamiltonian. Such questions arise in (i) quantum dynamics of disordered systems, where different realizations of disorder give rise to an ensemble of real-time quantum evolutions, (ii) quantum evolution with noisy Hamiltonians (temporal disorder), which leads to stochastic Schrödinger equations, and, (iii) in the broader context of quantum optimal control, where one needs to analyze an ensemble of permissible protocols in order to find one that optimizes a given figure of merit. The theme of ensemble quantum evolution appears in several emerging new directions in noneqilibrium quantum dynamics of thermally isolated many-body systems, which include many-body localization, noise-driven systems, and shortcuts to adiabaticity.

Ensemble properties in quantum steady-state nonequilibrium theories

Carsten Heide, N. F. Schwabe

Ensemble properties of nonequilibrium theories for quantum steady-state processes, introduced by Caroli et al. and Feuchtwang, are investigated. Starting from an uncoupled state of separate grand-canonical ensembles of two leads and a microcanonical ensemble of an isolated intermediate region, it is shown rigorously how these formalisms lead to the correct coupled state of a joint ensemble whose physical properties cease to depend on the initial occupation number of the intermediate region.
