Emergence of Chiral Magnetism in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates with Rashba Coupling

Abstract

Hydrodynamic theory of the spinor BEC condensate with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is presented. A close mathematical analogy of the Rashba-Bose-Einstein condensate model to the recently developed theory of chiral magnetism is found. Hydrodynamic equations for mass density, superfluid velocity, and the local magnetization are derived. The mass current is shown to contain an extra term proportional to the magnetization direction, as a result of the Rashba coupling. Elementary excitations around the two known ground states of the Rashba-Bose-Einstein condensate Hamiltonian, the plane-wave, and the stripe states, are worked out in the hydrodynamic framework, highlighting the cross coupling of spin and superflow velocity excitations due to the Rashba term.

Collective modes of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: A hydrodynamic approach

Wei Zheng, Zhibing Li

We studied the collective modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with spin-orbit coupling. We developed the hydrodynamic equations for spin-orbit coupled BECs and used them to study collective modes in the plane-wave phase and large Rabi coupling regime for both a uniform BEC and a BEC in a harmonic trap. In the homogeneous situation, we obtained energy spectra of elementary excitations and found that the spin-orbit coupling can increase the effective mass of the atoms, which will suppress the sound velocity. The spin-orbit coupling can also change the spin mixing, which will modify the interaction energy, and may lead to an enhancement of sound velocity. The competition between these two effects gives the behavior of sound velocity. In a harmonic trap, we found that the dipole mode and the breathing mode are coupled together in the plane-wave phase, and these two modes have a $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$ phase difference, because the spin-orbit coupling and the interaction are not invariant under spin rotation. However, in the large Rabi coupling regime, the dipole mode and the breathing mode are decoupled due to the symmetry restriction.

Diffused Vorticity and Moment of Inertia of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate

S. Stringari

By developing the hydrodynamic theory of spinor superfluids, we calculate the moment of inertia of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with spin-orbit coupling. We show that the velocity field associated with the rotation of the fluid exhibits diffused vorticity, in contrast to the irrotational behavior characterizing a superfluid. Both Raman-induced and Rashba spin-orbit couplings are considered. In the first case the moment of inertia takes the rigid value at the transition between the plane wave and the single minimum phase, while in the latter case the rigid value is achieved in the limit of isotropic Rashba coupling. A procedure to generate the rigid rotation of the fluid and to measure the moment of inertia is proposed. The quenching of the quantum of circulation h/m, caused by Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling in a toroidal geometry, is also discussed.

Spin-Orbit Coupled Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

An effective spin-orbit coupling can be generated in a cold atom system by engineering atom-light interactions. In this Letter we study spin-1/2 and spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that the condensate wave function will develop nontrivial structures. From numerical simulation we have identified two different phases. In one phase the ground state is a single plane wave, and often we find the system splits into domains and an array of vortices plays the role of a domain wall. In this phase, time-reversal symmetry is broken. In the other phase the condensate wave function is a standing wave, and it forms a spin stripe. The transition between them is driven by interactions between bosons. We also provide an analytical understanding of these results and determine the transition point between the two phases.

Vortex formation in a spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates with static quadrupole magnetic field

Jingjing Jin, Wei Han, Zongmin Ma +1 more

Abstract The ground-state phases of Rashba spin–orbit (SO)-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in a quadrupole magnetic field are studied. The coupling of quadrupole magnetic field and spin induces local nonzero gauge particle current, accompanied by the generation of equal and opposite canonical particle current, and leads to the spontaneous nucleation of quantized vortices. The condensates exhibit a variety of rich density patterns and vortex arrangements resulting from the competition among quadrupole magnetic field, SO coupling, and interatomic interactions. Novel vortex structures, such as static vortex dipole, three-vortex molecule and the structure of a cross-arranged vortices and anti-vortices surrounded by a density annulus are found in the condensates. These structures greatly enrich the ground-state phases of SO-coupled BECs, and help to understand the superfluid behavior of a BEC and the nonlinear behavior of coherent matter waves.

Anisotropic dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Giovanni Italo Martone, Yun Li, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

By calculating the density response function we identify the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the velocity of sound along the direction of spin-orbit coupling is deeply quenched and vanishes when one approaches the second-order phase transition between the plane-wave and the zero momentum quantum phases. We also point out the emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum for small values of the Raman coupling, providing the onset of the transition to the stripe phase. Our findings point out the occurrence of a strong anisotropy in the dynamic behavior of the gas. A hydrodynamic description accounting for the collective oscillations in both uniform and harmonically trapped gases is also derived.
