Fidelity for kicked atoms with gravity near a quantum resonance

Abstract

Kicked atoms under a constant Stark or gravity field are investigated for experimental setups with cold and ultracold atoms. The parametric stability of the quantum dynamics is studied using the fidelity. In the case of a quantum resonance, it is shown that the behavior of the fidelity depends on arithmetic properties of the gravity parameter. Close to a quantum resonance, the long-time asymptotics of the fidelity is studied by means of a pseudoclassical approximation introduced by Fishman et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 110, 911 (2003)]. The long-time decay of fidelity arises from the tunneling out of pseudoclassical stable islands, and a simple ansatz is proposed which satisfactorily reproduces the main features observed in numerical simulations.

Stable Quantum Resonances in Atom Optics

Shmuel Fishman, Italo Guarneri, Laura Rebuzzini

A theory for stabilization of quantum resonances by a mechanism similar to one leading to classical resonances in nonlinear systems is presented. It explains recent surprising experimental results, obtained for cold cesium atoms when driven in the presence of gravity, and leads to further predictions. The theory makes use of invariance properties of the system allowing for separation into independent kicked rotor problems. The analysis relies on a fictitious classical limit where the small parameter is not Planck's constant, but rather the detuning from the frequency that is resonant in the absence of gravity.

Quantum resonances and decoherence for -kicked atoms

Sandro Wimberger, Italo Guarneri, Shmuel Fishman

The quantum resonances occurring with δ-kicked atoms when the kicking period is an integer multiple of the half-Talbot time are analysed in detail. Exact results about the momentum distribution at exact resonance are established, both in the case of totally coherent dynamics and in the case when decoherence is induced by spontaneous emission. A description of the dynamics when the kicking period is close to, but not exactly at resonance, is derived by means of a quasi-classical approximation where the detuning from exact resonance plays the role of the Planck constant. In this way scaling laws describing the shape of the resonant peaks are obtained. Such analytical results are supported by extensive numerical simulations, and explain some recent surprising experimental observations.

Quantum Accelerator Modes Near Higher-Order Resonances

Italo Guarneri, Laura Rebuzzini

Quantum accelerator modes have been experimentally observed, and theoretically explained, in the dynamics of kicked cold atoms in the presence of gravity, when the kicking period is close to a half-integer multiple of the Talbot time. We generalize the theory to the case when the kicking period is sufficiently close to any rational multiple of the Talbot time, and thus predict new rich families of experimentally observable quantum accelerator modes.

Saturation of fidelity in the atom-optics kicked rotor

Sandro Wimberger, Andreas Buchleitner

We show that the quantum fidelity is accessible to cold atom experiments for a large class of evolutions in periodical potentials, properly taking into account the experimental initial conditions of the atomic ensemble. We prove analytically that, at the fundamental quantum resonances of the atom-optics kicked rotor, the fidelity saturates at a constant, time-independent value after a small number of kicks. The latter saturation arises from the bulk of the atomic ensemble, whilst for the resonantly accelerated atoms the fidelity is predicted to decay slowly according to a power law.

Fidelity of the near-resonant quantum kicked rotor

B Probst, R. Dubertrand, S Wimberger

We present a perturbative result for the temporal evolution of the fidelity of the quantum kicked rotor, i.e. the overlap of the same initial state evolved with two slightly different kicking strengths, for kicking periods close to a principal quantum resonance. Based on a pendulum approximation, we describe the fidelity for rotational orbits in the pseudo-classical phase space of a corresponding classical map. Our results are compared to numerical simulations indicating the range of applicability of our analytical approximation.
