Abstract

We investigate the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and its criticality in quantum phase transition. It is found that the EPR steerability function of the ground state of XY spin chain exhibits nonanalytic feature in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition by showing that its derivative with respect to anisotropy parameter diverges at the critical point. We then verify the universality of the critical phenomena of the EPR steerability function in the system. We also use two-qubit EPR-steering inequality to explore the relation between EPR steering and quantum phase transition.

Scaling of Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steering in spin chains

W. W. Cheng, Jyrki Piilo

Abstract Symmetric quantum properties and correlations have been often used earlier to study quantum phase transitions in many body systems and spin models. However, the use of asymmetric quantum features, such as steering, have attracted smaller amount of attention in this context, so far. We study EPR steering and quantum phase transitions in the Ising model in transverse field and in the anisotropic XY model by using steering robustness and quantum renormalization group method. The key ingredients of the quantum criticality near the critical points, such as finite-size scaling behaviour and critical exponents, are investigated in detail with two commonly used spin models. Our results show that the first derivative of steering robustness between two blocks diverges near the quantum phase transition points for both models, and exhibits a finite-size scaling effect. Moreover, we explore in detail the asymmetric character of EPR steering, by taking into accounts finite-size effects and measurement number, in the reduced block state in the anisotropic XY model. The results imply that one-way EPR steering does not exist in large system under the limit L → ∞ despite the fact that EPR steering for the reduced block state is asymmetric.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering Inequalities and Applications

Ying Yang, Huaixin Cao

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is very important quantum correlation of a composite quantum system. It is an intermediate type of nonlocal correlation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. In this paper, based on introducing definitions and characterizations of EPR steering, some EPR steering inequalities are derived. With these inequalities, the steerability of the maximally entangled state is checked and some conditions for the steerability of the X -states are obtained.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering of quantum phases in a cavity Bose-Einstein condensate with a single impurity

Shao-Peng Jia, Baijun Li, Ya‐Feng Jiao +2 more

We study Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering properties of quantum phases in the generalized Dicke model (GDM) generated by a cavity Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with a single impurity. It is shown that the normal and superradiant phases of the GDM exhibit much rich EPR steerability. In the normal phase, there exist one-way EPR steering from the cavity field (condensed atoms) to condensed atoms (the cavity field). In the superradiant phase, there is either one-way or two-way EPR steering for the cavity field and condensed atoms. It is found that the single impurity can act as a single-atom switch of the EPR steering to control the steering direction of one-way EPR steering and the transition between one-way and two-way EPR steering through switching on or off the impurity-BEC coupling. It is proved that the EPR steering parameters can witness the quantum phase transition (QPT) occurrence through the sudden change of the EPR steering parameters at the critical point of the QPT. Our results open a new way to manipulate macroscopic EPR steering and witness the QPT between the normal phase and the superradiant phase in the GDM through a microscopic impurity atom.

Quantum steerability based on joint measurability

Zhihua Chen, Xiang-Jun Ye, Shao-Ming Fei

Occupying a position between entanglement and Bell nonlocality, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Many criteria have been proposed and experimentally implemented to characterize EPR-steering. Nevertheless, only a few results are available to quantify steerability using analytical results. In this work, we propose a method for quantifying the steerability in two-qubit quantum states in the two-setting EPR-steering scenario, using the connection between joint measurability and steerability. We derive an analytical formula for the steerability of a class of X-states. The sufficient and necessary conditions for two-setting EPR-steering are presented. Based on these results, a class of asymmetric states, namely, one-way steerable states, are obtained.

Experimental Quantification of Asymmetric Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering

Kai Sun, Xiang-Jun Ye, Jin‐Shi Xu +6 more

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering describes the ability of one observer to nonlocally "steer" the other observer's state through local measurements. EPR steering exhibits a unique asymmetric property; i.e., the steerability can differ between observers, which can lead to one-way EPR steering in which only one observer obtains steerability in the steering process. This property is inherently different from the symmetric concepts of entanglement and Bell nonlocality, and it has attracted increasing interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate asymmetric EPR steering for a class of two-qubit states in the case of two measurement settings. We propose a practical method to quantify the steerability. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for EPR steering and clearly demonstrate one-way EPR steering. Our work provides new insight into the fundamental asymmetry of quantum nonlocality and has potential applications in asymmetric quantum information processing.

Experimental observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering via entanglement detection

Huan Yang, Zhiyong Ding, Dong Wang +5 more

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate quantum nonlocality between entanglement and Bell nonlocality, which plays an important role in quantum information processing tasks. In the past few years, the investigations concerning the EPR steering have been demonstrated in a series of experiments. However, these studies rely on the relevant steering inequalities and the choices of measurement settings. Here, we experimentally verify the EPR steering via entanglement detection without using any steering inequality and measurement setting. By constructing two new states from a two-qubit state, we observe the EPR steering by detecting the entanglement of these new states. The results show that the entanglement of the newly constructed states can be regarded as an unusual kind of steering witness for these states. Compared to the results of Xiao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 140404 (2017)], we find that the ability to detect the EPR steering in our scenario is stronger than that of two-setting projective measurements, which can observe more steerable states. Hence, our demonstrations can deepen the understanding of the connection between the EPR steering and entanglement.
