Abstract

We show how to control spatial quantum correlations in a multimode, degenerate, type-I optical parametric oscillator below threshold by introducing a spatially inhomogeneous medium, such as a photonic crystal, in the plane perpendicular to light propagation. We obtain the analytical expressions for all of the correlations in terms of the relevant parameters of the problem and study the number of photons, entanglement, squeezing, and twin beams. Considering different regimes and configurations, we show that it is possible to tune the instability thresholds as well as the quantumness of correlations by breaking the translational invariance of the system through a photonic-crystal modulation.

Spatial entanglement in optical parametric oscillators with photonic crystals

de Castro, Maria M., Miguel Ángel García March, Damià Gomila +1 more

The effects of an intracavity photonic crystal in a multimode optical parametric oscillator are studied, with a special focus on quantum fluctuations. The capability to either stimulate or inhibit the spatial instability, lowering or increasing the parametric threshold, allows to control the intensity fluctuations and correlations. A significative quantum noise reduction and an increase of the range of squeezed quadratures are found above threshold where spatial Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement and inseparability are found.

Control of spatial quantum fluctuations using photonic crystals

María Moreno de Castro, Damià Gomila, Roberta Zambrini

Optical parametric oscillators emit light with non-classical correlations between opposite spatial modes (twin beams). We consider these devices in presence of an intracavity photonic crystal, modeled by a spatial modulation of the refractive index. The introduction of photonic crystals allows to control not only the macroscopic transverse profile of the emitted light beam but also its quantum fluctuations. We employ the Q representation to study pump and signal spatial correlations.

Tuning quantum correlations with intracavity photonic crystals

María Moreno de Castro, Miguel Ángel García-March, Damià Gomila +1 more

We show how to tune quantum noise in nonlinear systems by means of periodic spatial modulation. We prove that the introduction of an intracavity photonic crystal in a multimode optical parametric oscillator inhibits and enhances light quantum fluctuations. Furthermore, it leads to a significant noise reduction in field quadratures, robustness of squeezing in a wider angular range, and spatial entanglement. These results have potential benefits for quantum imaging, metrology, and quantum information applications and suggest a control mechanism of fluctuations by spatial modulation of interest also in other nonlinear systems.

Photonic Crystals Acting on Instabilities and Squeezed States in OPOs

Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are known to induce non-classical spatial correlations in the transverse profile of emitted light beams. We show how intracavity photonic crystals modify their stability as well as quantum fluctuations improving squeezed states.

Twin beams, nonlinearity, and walk-off in optical parametric oscillators

Roberta Zambrini, Maxi San Miguel

We study the quantum properties of the spatially tilted macroscopic signal beams in the transverse pattern formed in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator above threshold. We show that walk-off leads to an imbalance in the intensities and fluctuations of these beams when nonlinear multimode interactions are effective. Still, quantum correlations between the two beams are preserved, so that their intensity difference exhibits sub-Poissonian statistics.

Theory of photon statistics and squeezing in quantum interference of a sub-threshold parametric oscillator

Roger Andrews, Edward R. Pike, Sarben Sarkar

A multimode theory describing quantum interference of a subthreshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with a coherent local oscillator (LO) in a homodyne detection scheme is presented. Analytic expressions for the count rates in terms of the correlation time and relative phase difference between the LO and OPO have been derived. The spectrum of squeezing is also derived and the threshold for squeezing obtained in terms of the crystal nonlinearity and LO and OPO beam intensities.
