Dark soliton in a disorder potential

Abstract

We consider a dark soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a weak disorder potential. Deformation of the soliton shape is analyzed within the Bogoliubov approach and by employing an expansion in eigenstates of the P\"oschl-Teller Hamiltonian. Comparison of the results with the numerical simulations indicates that the linear response analysis reveals a good agreement even if the strength of disorder is of the order of the chemical potential of the system. In the second part of the paper we concentrate on the quantum nature of the dark soliton and demonstrate that the soliton may reveal Anderson localization in the presence of disorder. The Anderson-localized soliton may decay due to quasiparticle excitations induced by the disorder. However, we show that the corresponding lifetime is much longer than the condensate lifetime in a typical experiment.

Breakdown of Anderson localization of interacting quantum bright solitons in a disorder potential

Marcin Płodzień, Krzysztof Sacha

The center of mass of a bright soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate may reveal Anderson localization in the presence of a weak disorder potential. We analyze the effects of interactions between two bright solitons on the Anderson localization phenomenon. Perturbation calculus shows that even very weak interactions modify localization properties of the system eigenstates. For stronger interactions (i.e., when the solitons are close to each other), the localization is totally broken. It implies that in order to experimentally observe the Anderson localization effects, a single bright soliton has to be prepared and excitation of soliton trains must be avoided.

Statics and dynamics of atomic dark-bright solitons in the presence of impurities

Vassos Achilleos, P. G. Kevrekidis, Vassilis M. Rothos +1 more

Adopting a mean-field description for a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, we study the statics and dynamics of dark-bright solitons in the presence of localized impurities. We use adiabatic perturbation theory to derive an equation of motion for the dark-bright soliton center. We show that, counterintuitively, an attractive (repulsive) delta-like impurity, acting solely on the bright-soliton component, induces an effective localized barrier (well) in the effective potential felt by the soliton; this way, dark-bright solitons are reflected from (transmitted through) attractive (repulsive) impurities. Our analytical results for the small-amplitude oscillations of solitons are found to be in good agreement with results obtained via a Bogoliubov--de Gennes analysis and direct numerical simulations.

Dark-dark-soliton dynamics in two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Ivan Morera, Antonio Muñoz Mateo, A. Polls +1 more

We study the one-dimensional dynamics of dark-dark solitons in the miscible regime of two density-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates having repulsive interparticle interactions within each condensate ($g>0$). By using an adiabatic perturbation theory in the parameter ${g}_{12}/g$, we show that, contrary to the case of two solitons in scalar condensates, the interactions between solitons are attractive when the interparticle interactions between condensates are repulsive ${g}_{12}>0$. As a result, the relative motion of dark solitons with equal chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ is well approximated by harmonic oscillations of angular frequency ${w}_{r}=(\ensuremath{\mu}/\ensuremath{\hbar})\sqrt{(8/15){g}_{12}/g}$. We also show that, in finite systems, the resonance of this anomalous excitation mode with the spin-density mode of lowest energy gives rise to alternating dynamical instability and stability fringes as a function of the perturbative parameter. In the presence of harmonic trapping (with angular frequency $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$) the solitons are driven by the superposition of two harmonic motions at a frequency given by ${w}^{2}={(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}/\sqrt{2})}^{2}+{w}_{r}^{2}$. When ${g}_{12}<0$, these two oscillators compete to give rise to an overall effective potential that can be either single well or double well through a pitchfork bifurcation. All our theoretical results are compared with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the dynamics and the Bogoliubov equations for the linear stability. A good agreement is found between them.

Bogoliubov Quasiparticles Carried by Dark Solitonic Excitations in Nonuniform Bose-Einstein Condensates

Tao Hong, Yuzhu Wang, Yunsheng Huo

We consider the noncondensate part of the Bose gas in presence of dark solitons. We get a stationary equation of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and find that these Bogoliubov quasiparticles are confined by a dark soliton and carried to propagate with it. This model of the compound structure of the soliton and Bogoliubov quasiparticles provides more precise description of localized sound excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Propagation of a Dark Soliton in a Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensate

Nicolas Bilas, Nicolas Pavloff

We consider the propagation of a dark soliton in a quasi-1D Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of a random potential. This configuration involves nonlinear effects and disorder, and we argue that, contrarily to the study of stationary transmission coefficients through a nonlinear disordered slab, it is a well-defined problem. It is found that a dark soliton decays algebraically, over a characteristic length which is independent of its initial velocity, and much larger than both the healing length and the 1D scattering length of the system. We also determine the characteristic decay time.

Dynamics of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Guoxiang Huang, Jacob Szeftel, Shanhua Zhu

We develop a systematic analytical approach to consider the dynamics of linear and nonlinear excitations in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive atom-atom interactions. We show that, for a condensate strongly confined in two transverse directions, the ground state of the system involves the high-order eigenmodes of the transverse confining potential in the transverse directions and effective high-order Thomas-Fermi wave functions in the axial direction. The linear excitations of the system have a Bogoliubov-type spectrum with the excitation frequency varying slowly along the axial direction. We find that, in a weak nonlinear approximation, the amplitude of a nonlinear excitation is governed by a variable coefficient Korteweg--de Vries equation with additional terms contributed from the transverse structure and the inhomogeneity in the axial direction of the condensate, which results in varying amplitude, width, and velocity for dark solitons. Because of the inhomogeneity the dark solitons undergo deformation and emit radiations when traveling along the axial direction. We finally demonstrate that a dark soliton will disintegrate into several ones plus a residual wave train when passing over a steplike potential.
