Renormalization-group exponents for superconducting phases in two-leg ladders

Abstract

In previous studies, we proposed a scaling ansatz for electron-electron interactions under renormalization group transformation. With the inclusion of phonon-mediated interactions, we show that the scaling ansatz, characterized by the divergent logarithmic length ${l}_{d}$ and a set of renormalization-group exponents, also works rather well. The superconducting phases in a doped two-leg ladder are studied and classified by these renormalization-group exponents as demonstration. Finally, nontrivial constraints among the exponents are derived and explained.

Phonons in Hubbard ladders studied within the framework of the one-loop renormalization group

Alexander Seidel, Hsiu‐Hau Lin, D. H. Lee

We study the effects of phonons in $N$-leg Hubbard ladders within the framework of a one-loop renormalization group. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate that the role of phonons changes qualitatively even in the simplest two-leg ladder, as compared-to the single-chain system where phonons always dominate. Our numerical results suggest that in the spin-gapped phase of the two-leg ladder, the opening of the spin gap by electron-electron interaction also drives the electron-phonon interaction to strong coupling, but in a subdominant fashion. Therefore, even though the inclusion of phonons does not alter the phase, their subdominant relevance strongly renormalizes some physical properties below the energy scale of the spin gap. This might shine some light on recent experiments showing an anomalous isotope effect in high-temperature superconductors.

Phase diagram of the Holstein-Hubbard two-leg ladder using a functional renormalization-group method

Ka-Ming Tam, Shan-Wen Tsai, David K Campbell +1 more

Using a functional renormalization-group method, we obtain the phase diagram of the two-leg ladder system within the Holstein-Hubbard model, which includes both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Our renormalization-group technique allows us to analyze the problem for both weak and strong electron-phonon couplings. We show that, in contrast to results from conventional weak-coupling studies, electron-phonon interactions can dominate electron-electron interactions, and retardation effects play an important role on the phase diagram.

Enhanced pairing in the checkerboard Hubbard ladder

George Karakonstantakis, Erez Berg, Steven R. White +1 more

We study signatures of superconductivity in a two-leg ``checkerboard'' Hubbard ladder model, defined as a one-dimensional (period 2) array of square plaquettes with an intraplaquette hopping $t$ and interplaquette hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The highest pairing scale (characterized by the spin gap or the pair binding energy, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit) is found for doping levels close to half-filling, $U\ensuremath{\approx}6t$ and ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t\ensuremath{\approx}0.6$. Other forms of modulated hopping parameters, with periods of either one or three lattice constants, are also found to enhance pairing relative to the uniform two-leg ladder, although to a lesser degree. A calculation of the phase stiffness of the ladder reveals that in the regime with the strongest pairing, the energy scale associated with phase ordering is comparable to the pairing scale.

Absence of Luther-Emery superconducting phase in the three-band model for cuprate ladders

Jeong-Pil Song, S. Mazumdar, Rudolf Torsten Clay

Correlated-electron theories of superconductivity in layered cuprates often start from the premise of a gapped spin-liquid phase proximate to the superconducting state. This assumption is justified based on analytical and numerical demonstrations of a superconducting Luther-Emery phase in the doped 2-leg one-band Hubbard ladder, and the perceived analogy between coupled ladders and the two-dimensional ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ layer. We demonstrate from accurate density matrix renormalization group studies the absence of the superconducting Luther-Emery phase in the doped 2-leg three-band ladder consisting of both copper and oxygen, even as the spin gap is large in the undoped three-band ladder. For realistic oxygen-oxygen hopping and Hubbard repulsion on the oxygen atoms, density-density rather than pairing correlations are dominant at long range. This result is equally valid whether or not the oxygens outside the ladder proper, over and above the rung and leg oxygens, are included in the computation. These results demonstrate the critical importance of oxygen orbitals, and raise disturbing questions about the applicability of many of the existing correlated-electron theories of superconductivity.

Magnetic-field-induced criticality in superconducting two-leg ladders

T. Vekua

We study magnetic-field-induced critical singularities in the superconducting phase of the hole-doped Hubbard model of repulsively interacting electrons, defined on a two-leg ladder. We argue that, provided the low-energy spin excitations in doped ladders carry electric charge, the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities, such as the specific-heat coefficient and magnetic susceptibility, will show logarithmic singularities in the quantum critical regime. This behavior is in drastic contrast to the magnetic-field-induced criticality in undoped Mott insulator ladders, which is governed by the zero-scale-factor universality with its hallmark square-root singularities.

Dimensional crossover in half-filled and lightly dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann

We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below ${E}_{c},$ the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band $(N+1)/2$ for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale ${E}_{c},$ all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above ${E}_{c}$ of the same type as in $N/2$ half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$
