Abstract

We present a full phase diagram for the one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell--Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in an attractive Hubbard model of 3D-coupled chains in a harmonic trap. We employ real-space dynamical mean-field theory which describes full local quantum fluctuations beyond the usual mean-field and local density approximation. We find strong dimensionality effects on the shell structure undergoing a crossover between distinctive quasi-1D and quasi-3D regimes. We predict an optimal regime for the FFLO state that is considerably extended to intermediate interchain couplings and polarizations, directly realizable with ultracold atomic gases. We find that the 1D-like FFLO feature is vulnerable to thermal fluctuations, while the FFLO state of mixed 1D-3D character can be stabilized at a higher temperature.

Finite-temperature stability and dimensional crossover of exotic superfluidity in lattices

Miikka O. J. Heikkinen, DH Kim, Päivi Törmä

We investigate exotic paired states of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases in anisotropic lattices, tuning the dimension between one and three. We calculate the finite temperature phase diagram of the system using real-space dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that regardless of the intermediate dimensions examined, the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state survives to reach about one third of the BCS critical temperature of the spin-density balanced case. We show how the gapless nature of the state found is reflected in the local spectral function. While the FFLO state is found at a wide range of polarizations at low temperatures across the dimensional crossover, with increasing temperature we find out strongly dimensionality-dependent melting characteristics of shell structures related to harmonic confinement. Moreover, we show that intermediate dimension can help to stabilize an extremely uniform finite temperature FFLO state despite the presence of harmonic confinement.

The influence of the dimensionality of the system on the realization of unconventional Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov pairing in ultra-cold Fermi gases

Andrzej Ptok

The recent development of experimental techniques in ultracold atomic Fermi gases is extremely helpful in the progress of the realization of the unconventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phase in quasi-one dimensional systems (Liao et al 2010 Nature 467 567). Due to a Fermi surface nesting, which is enhanced in 1D, the low-dimensional systems are particularly good candidates to find the FFLO phase stable. We investigate the influence of a dimensional crossover (from one dimension (1D) to two dimensions (2D) or three dimensions (3D)) on the stability of the FFLO state in the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Polarized Fermi Superfluids

Meera M. Parish, Stefan K. Baur, Erich J. Mueller +1 more

We calculate the zero-temperature (T=0) phase diagram of a polarized two-component Fermi gas in an array of weakly coupled parallel one-dimensional (1D) "tubes" produced by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Increasing the lattice strength drives a crossover from three-dimensional (3D) to 1D behavior, stabilizing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) modulated superfluid phase. We argue that the most promising regime for observing the FFLO phase is in the quasi-1D regime, where the atomic motion is largely 1D but there is weak tunneling in the other directions that stabilizes long-range order. In the FFLO phase, we describe a phase transition where the quasiparticle spectrum changes from gapless near the 3D regime to gapped in quasi-1D.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing in one-dimensional optical lattices

Spin-polarized attractive Fermi gases in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices are expected to be remarkably good candidates for the observation of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We model these systems with an attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance. By means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we compute the pairing correlations as well as the static spin and charge structure factors in the whole range from weak to strong coupling. We demonstrate that pairing correlations exhibit quasi-long-range order and oscillations at the wave number expected from the FFLO theory. However, we also show by numerically computing the mixed spin-charge static structure factor that charge and spin degrees of freedom appear to be coupled already for a small imbalance. We discuss the consequences of this coupling for the observation of the FFLO phase, as well as for the stabilization of the quasi-long-range order into long-range order by coupling many identical 1D systems, such as in quasi-1D optical lattices.

FFLO state in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional optical lattices combined with a non-uniform background potential

T. K. Koponen, Tomi Paananen, J.-P. Martikainen +2 more

We study the phase diagram of an imbalanced two-component Fermi gas in optical lattices of 1–3 dimensions (1D–3D), considering the possibilities of the Fulde–Ferrel–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO), Sarma/breached pair, BCS and normal states as well as phase separation, at finite and zero temperatures. In particular, phase diagrams with respect to average chemical potential and the chemical potential difference of the two components are considered, because this gives the essential information about the shell structures of phases that will occur in the presence of an additional (harmonic) confinement. These phase diagrams in 1D, 2D and 3D show in a striking way the effect of Van Hove singularities on the FFLO state. Although we focus on population imbalanced gases, the results are relevant also for the (effective) mass imbalanced case. We demonstrate by LDA calculations that various shell structures such as normal–FFLO–BCS–FFLO–normal, or FFLO–normal, are possible in presence of a background harmonic trap. The phases are reflected in noise correlations: especially in 1D the unpaired atoms leave a clear signature of the FFLO state as a zero-correlation area ('breach') within the Fermi sea. This strong signature occurs both for a 1D lattice as well as for a 1D continuum. We also discuss the effect of Hartree energies and the Gorkov correction on the phase diagrams.

Stable Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing states in two-dimensional and three-dimensional optical lattices

Zi Cai, Yupeng Wang, Congjun Wu

We present the study of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing states in the $p$-orbital bands in both two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. Due to the quasi-one-dimensional band structure which arises from the unidirectional hopping of the orthogonal $p$ orbitals, the pairing phase space is not affected by spin imbalance. Furthermore, interactions build up high-dimensional phase coherence which stabilizes the FFLO states in 2D and 3D optical lattices in a large parameter regime in the phase diagram. These FFLO phases are stable with the imposition of the inhomogeneous trapping potential. Their entropies are comparable to the normal states at finite temperatures.
