Abstract

The quantum average energy decay and the purity decay are studied for a system particle as a function of the number of constituents of a discrete bath model. The system particle is subjected to two distinct physical situations: the harmonic oscillator (HO) and the Morse potential. The environment (bath) is composed by a {\it finite} number N of uncoupled HOs, characterizing the structured bath, which in the limit $N\to\infty$ is assumed to have an ohmic, sub-ohmic or super-ohmic spectral density. For very low values of N the mean energy and purity remain constant in time but starts to decay for intermediate values (10

Decoherence and dissipation in a molecular system coupled to an environment: An application of semiclassical hybrid dynamics

Christoph-Marian Goletz, Frank Großmann

Applying the recently developed semiclassical hybrid dynamics [Grossmann, J. Chem. Phys. 125, 014111 (2006)], we study the decay of interference patterns in the reduced density as well as of the purity in a Morse oscillator test system due to the interaction with a finite harmonic bath at zero temperature. In the case that the bath mimics a continuous Ohmic spectral density, in addition to the quantum classical transition induced by the interaction with the environment, we corroborate the existence of a blueshift due to the bath coupling, predicted by Pollak [Phys. Rev. A 33, 4244 (1986)]. Furthermore, the decoherence dynamics of cat states is confirmed to be faster than that of single coherent states and we show that for a resonant bath the dissipation leads to an increase in the decoherence rate as compared to the low frequency bath.

Survival of coherence for open quantum systems in thermal baths

Filippo Giraldi, Francesco Petruccione

The loss of coherence in a general open quantum system interacting with a bosonic environment is analyzed. The reservoir is initially in a thermal state. The reduced dynamics is described by a non-Markovian time-local master equation. We consider spectral densities that are sub- or super-Ohmic at low frequencies and arbitrarily shaped at high frequencies. In the super-Ohmic regime, for noninteger frequency powers larger than 2, long time survival of coherence appears. In the latter regime, at vanishing temperature, the asymptotic amount of surviving coherence is stabilized to its initial value, up to a phase factor, by properly increasing the bandwidth and decreasing the low-frequency profile of the spectral density. For noninteger positive frequency powers less than 2, stretched exponential-like decoherence is found over long times. The relaxations to the asymptotic configurations become arbitrarily slow by approaching the frequency power 2 of the super-Ohmic regime. The same dependence on temperature, spectral density, and scale frequency appears for purity and concurrence of two qubits and coherence of a qubit.

Decoherence in regular systems

Marko Žnidarič, Tomaž Prosen

We consider unitary evolution of finite bipartite quantum systems and study time dependence of purity for initial cat states -- coherent superpositions of Gaussian wave-packets. We derive explicit formula for purity in systems with nonzero time averaged coupling, a typical situation for systems where an uncoupled part of the Hamiltonian is Liouville integrable. Previous analytical studies have been limited to harmonic oscillator systems but with our theory we are able to derive analytical results for general integrable systems. Two regimes are clearly identified, at short times purity decays due to decoherence whereas at longer times it decays because of relaxation.

Modeling the dynamics of quantum systems coupled to large-dimensional baths using effective energy states

Loïse Attal, Cyril Falvo, F. Calvo +1 more

The quantum dynamics of a low-dimensional system in contact with a large but finite harmonic bath is theoretically investigated by coarse-graining the bath into a reduced set of effective energy states. In this model, the couplings between the system and the bath are obtained from statistically averaging over the discrete, degenerate effective states. Our model is aimed at intermediate bath sizes in which non-Markovian processes and energy transfer between the bath and the main system are important. The method is applied to a model system of a Morse oscillator coupled to 40 harmonic modes. The results are found to be in excellent agreement with the direct quantum dynamics simulations presented in the work of Bouakline et al. [J. Phys. Chem. A 116, 11118-11127 (2012)], but at a much lower computational cost. Extension to larger baths is discussed in comparison to the time-convolutionless method. We also extend this study to the case of a microcanonical bath with finite initial internal energies. The computational efficiency and convergence properties of the effective bath states model with respect to relevant parameters are also discussed.

Multiconfigurational system-bath dynamics using Gaussian wave packets: Energy relaxation and decoherence induced by a finite-dimensional bath

Irène Burghardt, Mathias Nest, Graham A. Worth

The quantum dynamics of an anharmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of up to 60 harmonic oscillators is investigated by a new multiconfigurational hybrid method for wave packet propagation. The method, originally proposed in [Burghardt, Meyer, and Cederbaum, J. Chem. Phys. 111, 2927 (1999)], represents a variant of the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method including a moving basis of Gaussian functions. Energy relaxation and quantum decoherence induced by the zero-temperature oscillator bath are shown to be accurately described by the new method. Decoherence rates for a bath with a discretized ohmic spectral density are found to be consistent with golden-rule predictions for T=0.
