Abstract

Utilizing large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate an unconventional two-component classical plasma in two dimensions which controls the behavior of the norms and overlaps of the quantum-mechanical wave functions of Ising-type quantum Hall states. The plasma differs fundamentally from that which is associated with the two-dimensional $XY$ model and Abelian fractional quantum Hall states. We find that this unconventional plasma undergoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition from an insulator to a metal. The parameter values corresponding to Ising-type quantum Hall states lie on the metallic side of this transition. This result verifies the required properties of the unconventional plasma used to demonstrate that Ising-type quantum Hall states possess quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics.

Freezing of unconventional two-dimensional plasmas

This thesis presents four research papers in the field of condensed-matter theory. In all four papers, large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate phases and phase transitions in two-component models of superconductors and superfluids with multiple broken symmetries. In Article I, a U(1) × U(1) lattice London superconductor with two different types of intercomponent interactions is investigated with focus on understanding the phases and the phase transitions of the model. Particularly, this model exhibits two different paired phases where proliferation of composite topological defects plays an important role.In Article II and III, a two-dimensional unconventional two-component Coulomb plasma with two distinct Coulomb interactions is investigated. The plasma relates to inner products of Ising-type quantum Hall states as well as to rotating two-component Bose- Einstein condensates with an intercomponent Andreev-Bashkin drag interaction. We investigate the phases and phase transitions of this plasma. Depending on the strength of the attractive intercomponent interaction, the plasma can undergo a Berezinskii- Kosterlitz-Thouless charge-unbinding transition. It can also undergo a two-dimensional melting transition when there is a strong intracomponent repulsion for one of the components. For the parameter values corresponding to the Ising-type quantum Hall states, the plasma is in a screening phase. This can be used to demonstrate that Ising-type quantum Hall states possess quasiparticles with exotic properties. In Article IV, the noncompact CP1 model is investigated. This model is proposed as a critical field theory of the continuous quantum phase transition between the N´eel state and the paramagnetic valence bond solid state in a quantum antiferromagnet. The model exhibits a direct transition line between a fully ordered phase with broken SU(2) symmetry and a fully disordered phase. By going to larger systems, we find that the bicritical point, which terminates the direct transition line, has been overestimated in earlier works. This may have important consequences for the determination of the character of the phase transition along the direct transition line.

Plasma analogy and non-Abelian statistics for Ising-type quantum Hall states

Parsa Bonderson, Victor Gurarie, Chetan Nayak

We study the non-Abelian statistics of quasiparticles in the Ising-type quantum Hall states which are likely candidates to explain the observed Hall conductivity plateaus in the second Landau level, most notably the one at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$. We complete the program started in V. Gurarie and C. Nayak, [Nucl. Phys. B 506, 685 (1997)]. and show that the degenerate four-quasihole and six-quasihole wave functions of the Moore-Read Pfaffian state are orthogonal with equal constant norms in the basis given by conformal blocks in a $c=1+\frac{1}{2}$ conformal field theory. As a consequence, this proves that the non-Abelian statistics of the excitations in this state are given by the explicit analytic continuation of these wave functions. Our proof is based on a plasma analogy derived from the Coulomb gas construction of Ising model correlation functions involving both order and (at most two) disorder operators. We show how this computation also determines the non-Abelian statistics of collections of more than six quasiholes and give an explicit expression for the corresponding conformal block-derived wave functions for an arbitrary number of quasiholes. Our method also applies to the anti-Pfaffian wave function and to Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy states constructed over the Moore-Read and anti-Pfaffian states.

Unconventional metal-insulator transition in two dimensions

Manuela Capello, Federico Becca, Seiji Yunoki +1 more

We show, by using a correlated Jastrow wave function and a mapping onto a classical model, that the two-dimensional Mott transition in a simple half-filled one-band model can be unconventional and very similar to the binding-unbinding Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of vortices and antivortices, here identified by empty and doubly occupied sites. Within this framework, electrons strongly interact with collective plasmon excitations that induce anomalous critical properties on both sides of the transition. In particular, the insulating phase is characterized by a singular power-law behavior in the photoemission spectrum, which can be continuously connected to the fully projected insulating state relevant to strongly correlated low-energy models.

Abelian and non-Abelian states in ν=2/3 bilayer fractional quantum Hall systems

Michael R. Peterson, Yang-Le Wu, Meng Cheng +3 more

There are several possible theoretically allowed non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that could potentially be realized in one- and two-component FQH systems at total filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=n+2/3$, for integer $n$. Some of these states even possess quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics that are powerful enough for universal topological quantum computation, and are thus of particular interest. Here we initiate a systematic numerical study, using both exact diagonalization and variational Monte Carlo, to investigate the phase diagram of FQH systems at total filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=n+2/3$, including in particular the possibility of the non-Abelian ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state. In $\ensuremath{\nu}=2/3$ bilayers we determine the phase diagram as a function of interlayer tunneling and repulsion, finding only three competing Abelian states, without the ${Z}_{4}$ state. On the other hand, in single-component systems at $\ensuremath{\nu}=8/3$, we find that the ${Z}_{4}$ parafermion state has significantly higher overlap with the exact ground state than the Laughlin state, together with a larger gap, suggesting that the experimentally observed $\ensuremath{\nu}=8/3$ state may be non-Abelian. Our results from the two complementary numerical techniques agree well with each other qualitatively.

Anyon Condensation and Continuous Topological Phase Transitions in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall States

Maissam Barkeshli, Xiao-Gang Wen

We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall states at the same filling fraction in two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state, while the other side is the non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have implications for experiments on two-component systems at ν=2/3 and single-component systems at ν=8/3.
