Abstract

For phase transitions in dissipative quantum impurity models, the existence of a quantum-to-classical correspondence has been discussed extensively. We introduce a variational matrix product state approach involving an optimized boson basis, rendering possible high-accuracy numerical studies across the entire phase diagram. For the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with a power-law bath spectrum ∝ω(s), we confirm classical mean-field behavior for s<1/2, correcting earlier numerical renormalization-group results. We also provide the first results for an XY-symmetric model of a spin coupled to two competing bosonic baths, where we find a rich phase diagram, including both critical and strong-coupling phases for s<1, different from that of classical spin chains. This illustrates that symmetries are decisive for whether or not a quantum-to-classical correspondence exists.

Symmetry and Explicit Marking of the Critical Phase in Two-Bath Spin-Boson Model

Yao Yao, Nengji Zhou, Javier Prior +1 more

The spin-boson model is a paradigm for studying decoherence, relaxation, entanglement and other effects that arise in a quantum system coupled to environmental degrees of freedom. At zero temperature, a localization-delocalization phase transition is known to exist in the sub-Ohmic regime, where the standard density matrix renormalization group algorithm is inadequate due to the divergence in the number of low-frequency modes. This limitation is circumvented in this work by symmetrically optimizing the phonon basis and introducing an order parameter accounting for the U(1) symmetry for a two-bath spin-boson model, by which we are able to determine the classification and criticality of the phase transition explicitly. Compared with variational results, the critical phase is characterized by spontaneous vanishing of boson displacements in both the baths, resulting in an accurate phase diagram with three model parameters.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Bosonic Systems and Application to the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

R. Bulla, Ning-Hua Tong, Matthias Vojta C

We describe the generalization of Wilson's numerical renormalization group method to quantum impurity models with a bosonic bath, providing a general nonperturbative approach to bosonic impurity models which can access exponentially small energies and temperatures. As an application, we consider the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We find clear evidence for a line of continuous quantum phase transitions for sub-Ohmic bath exponents 0<s<1; the line terminates in the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at s=1. Contact is made with results from perturbative renormalization group, and various other applications are outlined.

Two-bath spin-boson model: Phase diagram and critical properties

Benedikt Bruognolo, Andreas Weichselbaum, Cheng Guo +3 more

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators, is a generic model for quantum dissipation, with manifold applications. It has also been studied as a simple example for an impurity quantum phase transition. Here, we present a detailed study of a U(1)-symmetric two-bath spin-boson model, where two different components of an SU(2) spin $\frac{1}{2}$ are coupled to separate dissipative baths. Nontrivial physics arises from the competition of the two dissipation channels, resulting in a variety of phases and quantum phase transitions. We employ a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to determine the properties of both the stable phases and the quantum critical points. In particular, we find a critical intermediate-coupling phase which is bounded by a continuous quantum phase transition which violates the quantum-to-classical correspondence.

Quantum criticality in sub-Ohmic systems with three competing terms: beyond conventional spin-boson physics

Nengji Zhou, Yulong Shen, Zhe Sun

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the spin-boson model with/without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) are systematically investigated through variational calculations using a sub-Ohmic bath with high spectral density. Four cases involving different system-environment interactions are examined, where transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined across varying tunneling strengths. Contrary to prior work, a rich phase diagram is revealed in the tunneling-coupling plane even at the low spectral exponent $s<1/2$, with a novel U(1)-symmetric phase being identified. As coupling increases, a multi-stage QPT sequence arises for the tunneling $0<Δ< Δ^*=0.074(1)$, whereas a single transition occurs beyond this range. Furthermore, an odd-parity phase is found to emerge even under the positive tunneling, exhibiting distinct characteristics relative to the prototype model.

Rich phase diagram of quantum phases in the anisotropic subohmic spin-boson model

Yanzhi Wang, Shu He, Liwei Duan +1 more

We study the anisotropic spin-boson model (SBM) with the subohmic bath by a numerically exact method based on variational matrix product states. A rich phase diagram is found in the anisotropy-coupling strength plane by calculating several observables. There are three distinct quantum phases: a delocalized phase with even parity (phase I), a delocalized phase with odd parity (phase II), and a localized phase with broken ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry (phase III), which intersect at a quantum tricritical point. The competition between those phases gives an overall picture of the phase diagram. For small power of the spectral function of the bosonic bath, the quantum phase transition (QPT) from phase I to III with mean-field critical behavior is present, similar to the isotropic SBM. The phase diagram with three different phases can be found at large power of the spectral function: For the highly anisotropic case, the system experiences the QPTs from phase I to II via first order, and then to phase III via second order with the increase of the coupling strength. For the low anisotropic case, the system only experiences the continuous QPT from phase I to phase III with the non-mean-field critical exponents. Very interestingly, at the moderate anisotropy, the system would display the continuous QPTs for several times but with the same critical exponents. This unusual reentrance to the same localized phase is discovered in light-matter interacting systems. The present study on the anisotropic SBM could open an avenue to the rich quantum criticality.

Variational Study of the Two‐Impurity Spin–Boson Model with a Common Ohmic Bath: Ground‐State Phase Transitions

Nengji Zhou, Yuyu Zhang, Zhiguo Lü +1 more

Abstract By means of a trial wave function, the multi‐D1 ansatz, extensive variational calculations with more than 10 000 parameters are carried out to study quantum phase transitions in the ground states of a two‐impurity system embedded in a common Ohmic bath of bosons. Quantum criticality in both the impurity system and the Ohmic bosonic bath is investigated with relevant transition points and critical exponents determined accurately. With the linear grid of the Ohmic spectral density, numerical calculations herein produce a much better description of the ground states with lower energies than other calculations employing a logarithmic grid with a discretization factor far greater than unity. This offers a possible resolution to the considerable controversy on the critical coupling in the literature. Moreover, the ground‐state phase transition is inferred to be of first order in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic spin–spin coupling, at variance with that in the ferromagnetic regime or in the absence of spin–spin coupling where the transition belongs to the Kosterlitz–Thouless universality class.
