Abstract

We measure the momentum distribution of a two-dimensional trapped Bose gas and observe the increase of the range of coherence around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. We quantitatively compare our observed profiles to both a Hartree-Fock mean-field theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the normal phase, the momentum distribution is observed to sharpen well before the phase transition. This behavior is partially captured in a mean-field approach, in contrast to the physics of the BKT transition.

Observation of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in a Two-Dimensional Bose Gas via Matter-Wave Interferometry

Shinichi Sunami, Vijay Pal Singh, D. Garrick +6 more

We probe local phase fluctuations of trapped two-dimensional Bose gases using matter-wave interferometry. This enables us to measure the phase correlation function, which changes from an algebraic to an exponential decay when the system crosses the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. We determine the temperature dependence of the BKT exponent η and find the critical value η_{c}=0.17(3) for our trapped system. Furthermore, we measure the local vortex density as a function of the local phase-space density, which shows a scale-invariant behavior across the transition. Our experimental investigation is supported by Monte Carlo simulations and provides a comprehensive understanding of the BKT transition in a trapped system.

Quasicondensation and coherence in the quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gas

R. N. Bisset, Matthew J. Davis, Tapio Simula +1 more

We simulate a trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas using a classical field method. To interpret our results we identify the uniform Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature ${T}_{\text{BKT}}$ as where the system phase-space density satisfies a critical value. We observe that density fluctuations are suppressed in the system well above ${T}_{\text{BKT}}$ when a quasicondensate forms as the first occurrence of degeneracy. At lower temperatures, but still above ${T}_{\text{BKT}}$, we observe the development of appreciable coherence as a prominent finite-size effect, which manifests as bimodality in the momentum distribution of the system. At ${T}_{\text{BKT}}$ algebraic decay of off-diagonal correlations occurs near the trap center with an exponent of 0.25, as expected for the uniform system. Our results characterize the low-temperature phase diagram for a trapped quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas and are consistent with observations made in recent experiments.

Connecting Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and BEC Phase Transitions by Tuning Interactions in a Trapped Gas

Richard J. Fletcher, Martin Robert-De-Saint-Vincent, Jay Man +4 more

We study the critical point for the emergence of coherence in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose gas with tunable interactions. Over a wide range of interaction strengths we find excellent agreement with the classical-field predictions for the critical point of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superfluid transition. This allows us to quantitatively show, without any free parameters, that the interaction-driven BKT transition smoothly converges onto the purely quantum-statistical Bose-Einstein condensation transition in the limit of vanishing interactions.

Observation of the universal jump across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two-dimensional Bose gases

Jiho Noh, Jeongwon Lee, Jongchul Mun

The physics in two-dimensional (2D) systems is very different from what we observe in three-dimensional (3D) systems. Thermal fluctuations in 2D systems are enhanced, and they prevent the conventional Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at non-zero temperatures by destroying the long-range order. However, a phase transition to a superfluid phase is still expected to occur in a 2D system along with an emergence of a quasi-long-range order, explained by the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) mechanism. Within the BKT mechanism, a universal jump of the superfluid density in a 2D Bosonic system was theoretically predicted by Nelson and Kosterlitz, and was first observed in 2D \textsuperscript{4}He films by Bishop and Reppy. Recent experiments in trapped ultracold 2D Bose gas systems have shown signatures of the BKT transition, and its superfluidity. However, the universal jump in the superfluid density was not observed in these systems. Here we report the first observation of the universal jump in the superfluid density using an optically trapped ultracold 2D Bose gas. The measured superfluid phase space density at the BKT transition agrees well with the predicted value within our measurement uncertainty. Additionally, we measure the phase fluctuations in our density profiles to show that the BKT transition occurs first, followed by the BEC transition.

Quantitative test of the mean-field description of a trapped two-dimensional Bose gas

R. N. Bisset, P. B. Blakie

We investigate the accuracy of two mean-field theories of the trapped two-dimensional Bose gas at predicting transition region properties by comparison to nonperturbative classical field calculations. To make these comparisons we examine the density profiles and the predictions for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless superfluid transition temperature over a parameter range in which the degree of thermal activation in the tightly trapped direction varies considerably. These results present an important test of these mean-field theories and provide a characterization of their typical accuracy.

Effect of disorder close to the superfluid transition in a two-dimensional Bose gas

Baptiste Allard, Thomas Plisson, Markus Holzmann +4 more

We experimentally study the effect of disorder on trapped quasi-two-dimensional (2D) ${}^{87}$Rb clouds in the vicinity of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition. The disorder correlation length is of the order of the Bose gas characteristic length scales (thermal de Broglie wavelength, healing length) and disorder thus modifies the physics at a microscopic level. We analyze the coherence properties of the cloud through measurements of the momentum distributions for two disorder strengths as a function of its degeneracy. For moderate disorder, the emergence of coherence remains steep but is shifted to a lower entropy. In contrast, for strong disorder, the growth of coherence is hindered. Our study is an experimental realization of the dirty boson problem in a well controlled atomic system suitable for quantitative analysis.
