Abstract

We show the spin-orbital coupling induced by an artificial light-induced gauge field can fully restore superfluidity suppressed by population imbalance in a two-dimensional (2D) Fermi gas, leading to unconventional superfluid states either with topological Majorana fermion excitations or showing a novel mixture of triplet pairing with spin-up (down) components respectively in the $p_{x}\pm ip_{y}$ pairing channels. We self-consistently calculate the zero temperature phase diagram at the BCS\ side of Feshbach resonance and show that the phase transitions between different superfluid states can be revealed through measurement of the in-situ density profile of the 2D atomic cloud in a weak global trap.

Topological superfluid in a two-dimensional polarized Fermi gas with spin–orbit coupling and adiabatic rotation

Lei Qiao, Cheng Chi

We study the properties of superfluid in a two-dimensional (2D) polarized Fermi gas with spin–orbit coupling and adiabatic rotation which are trapped in a harmonic potential. Due to the competition between polarization, spin–orbit coupling, and adiabatic rotation, the Fermi gas exhibits many intriguing phenomena. By using the Bardeen–Cooper– Schrieffer (BCS) mean-field method with local density approximation, we investigate the dependence of order parameter solution on the spin–orbit coupling strength and the rotation velocity. The energy spectra with different rotation velocities are studied in detail. Besides, the conditions for the zero-energy Majorana fermions in topological superfluid phase to be observed are obtained. By investigating distributions of number density, we find that the rotation has opposite effect on the distribution of number density with different spins, which leads to the enhancement of the polarization of Fermi gas. Here, we focus on the region of BCS pairing and ignore the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov state.

Topologically non-trivial superfluid phases and Majorana fermions from Kohn-Luttinger effect

M. S. Mar’enko, Jay Deep Sau, Sumanta Tewari

Spin-triplet p-wave superfluids of single-species (or spin-polarized) fermionic atoms is a topological superfluid. In 2D such a superfluid supports zero-energy topological Majorana fermion excitations in order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. In 3D these superfluids support topologically protected Dirac points in the bulk spectrum and flat surface Majorana arcs. Despite the promise, creating a spin-triplet p-wave single-species fermionic superfluid either from direct p-wave Feshbach resonance or indirectly from the recently proposed artificial spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings can be technologically challenging. Here we show that such topological superfluids can be far more simply created by using the Kohn-Luttinger effect applied to two species of spin-polarized fermions with a density imbalance. We discuss how the topological Majorana excitations of the resulting superfluids can be identified using recently-developed experimental techniques.

Spin-orbit coupling induced unconventional pairings in a one-dimensional lattice

J.-Q. Liang, Xiaofan Zhou, Pak Hong Chui +5 more

Pairings are the heart for exploring novel superfluid physics of degenerate fermi gases. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), some exotic pairings, including the triplet $p$-wave pairing, have been predicted, which paves a new way to search topological superfluids and associated Majorana fermions. In this work, we reveal unconventional pairings induced by SOC in a one-dimensional optical lattice, using the exact density-matrix renormalization group. In the weak SOC, we find the interband Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and intraband Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairings may coexist, when both bands are partially occupied. This interesting coexistence can lead to a new quantum state, called the FFLO-BCS phase, which exhibits a unique three-peak structure in pairing momentum distribution. However, in the intermediate and strong SOCs, the intraband BCS pairing dominates in the whole parameter regime. These results shed great light on the realization of topological superfluids in the spin-orbit coupled lattice.

Phase Diagram of Two-dimensional Polarized Fermi Gas With Spin-Orbit Coupling

Xiaosen Yang, Shaolong Wan

We investigate the ground state of the two-dimensional polarized Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling and construct the phase diagram at zero temperature. We find there exist phase separation when the binding energy is low. As the binding energy increasing, the topological nontrivial superfluid phase coexist with topologically trivial superfluid phase which is topological phase separation. The spin-orbit coupling interaction enhance the triplet pairing and destabilize the phase separation against superfluid phase.

Topological superfluids in two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

Xiaosen Yang, Ho-Kin Tang, Noah F. Q. Yuan +4 more

The realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in ultracold atoms has triggered an intensive exploring of topological superfluids in the degenerate Fermi gases based on mean-field theory, which has not yet been reported in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the topological phase transitions in the system via the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo method. Without prior assumptions, our unbiased real-space calculation shows that spin-orbit coupling can stabilize an unconventional pairing in the weak SOC regime, in which the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing coexists with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing. Furthermore, we use the jumps in the spin polarization at the time-reversal invariant momenta to qualify the topological phase transition, where we find the critical exponent deviated from the mean-field theory. Our results pave the way for the searching of unconventional pairing and topological superfluids with degenerate Fermi gases.

Coexistence of topological and nontopological Fermi-superfluid phases

K. Thompson, Ulrich Zülicke, Joachim Brand

The two-dimensional spin-imbalanced Fermi gas subject to $s$-wave pairing and spin-orbit coupling is considered a promising platform for realizing a topological chiral-$p$-wave superfluid. In the BCS limit of $s$-wave pairing, i.e., when Cooper pairs are only weakly bound, the system enters the topological phase via a second-order transition driven by increasing the Zeeman spin-splitting energy. Stronger attractive two-particle interactions cause the system to undergo the BCS-BEC crossover, in the course of which the topological transition becomes first order. As a result, topological and nontopological superfluids coexist in spatially separated domains in an extended region of phase space spanned by the strength of $s$-wave interactions and the Zeeman energy. Here we investigate this phase-coexistence region theoretically using a zero-temperature mean-field approach. Exact numerical results are presented to illustrate basic physical characteristics of the coexisting phases and to validate an approximate analytical description derived for weak spin-orbit coupling. Besides extending our current understanding of spin-imbalanced superfluid Fermi systems, the present approach also provides a platform for future studies of unconventional Majorana excitations that, according to topology, should be present at the internal interface between coexisting topological and nontopological superfluid parts of the system.
