Geometric analysis of entangled qubit pairs

A. Ramšak

Published Oct 26, 2011• 3 citations

Abstract

Two entangled electron spins, or qubits, are analyzed in terms of ordinary three-dimensional space geometric properties, as are the angles between their angular momenta. This formulation allows concurrence, a measure of quantum entanglement, to be expressed as expectation values of trigonometric functions of the azimuthal angle between the two angular momenta.

Spin–spin correlations of entangled qubit pairs in the Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics

A. Ramšak

A general entangled qubit pair is analyzed in the de Broglie-Bohm formalism corresponding to two spin-1/2 quantum rotors. Several spin-spin correlators of Bohm's hidden variables are analyzed numerically and a detailed comparison with results obtained by standard quantum mechanics is outlined. In addition to various expectation values the Bohm interpretation allows also a study of the corresponding probability distributions, which enables a novel understanding of entangled qubit dynamics. In particular, it is shown how the angular momenta of two qubits in this formalism can be viewed geometrically and characterized by their relative angles. For perfectly entangled pairs, for example, a compelling picture is given, where the qubits exhibit a unison precession making a constant angle between their angular momenta. It is also demonstrated that the properties of standard quantum mechanical spin-spin correlators responsible for the violation of Bell's inequalities are identical to their counterparts emerging from the probability distributions obtained by the Bohmian approach.

Geometrical view of quantum entanglement

A. Ramšak

Although a precise description of microscopic physical problems requires a full quantum-mechanical treatment, physical quantities are generally discussed in terms of classical variables. One exception is quantum entanglement which apparently has no classical counterpart. We demonstrate here how quantum entanglement may be within the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics visualized in geometrical terms, giving new insight into this mysterious phenomenon and a language to describe it. On the basis of our analysis of the dynamics of a pair of qubits, quantum entanglement is linked to concurrent motion of angular momenta in the Bohmian space of hidden variables and to the average angle between these momenta.

Entanglement of three-qubit geometry

Dorje C. Brody, Anna C T Gustavsson, Lane P. Hughston

Geometric quantum mechanics aims to express the physical properties of quantum systems in terms of geometrical features preferentially selected in the space of pure states. Geometric characterisations are given here for systems of one, two, and three spin-½ particles, drawing attention to the classification of quantum states into entanglement types.

Entanglement of electron pairs extracted from a many-body system

A. Ramšak, Jernej Mravlje, T. Rejec +1 more

Entanglement of spins is analyzed for two electrons extracted from a mixed many-electron state by projecting onto the two-electron subspace. The concurrence formulae are expressed in a compact form for states with a well-defined square of the total spin projection. As an example, the thermal entanglement for a qubit pair with an anisotropic Heisenberg and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is given analytically. Remarkably, the concurrence of a pair of electrons with antiparallel spins and in a delocalised orbital state is given by the scalar product of the state with its spin-flipped state and not with the time-reversed state.

Geometric measure of entanglement for pure states and mean value of spin

Andrzej Frydryszak, V. M. Tkachuk

We derive an explicit expression for geometric measure of entanglement for spin and other quantum system. A relation of entanglement in pure state with the mean value of spin is given, thus, at the experimental level the local measurement of spin may allow to find the value of entanglement. The obtained form of the measure is applied to the explicit characterization of bipartite entanglement for $n$-qubit systems in the Werner state, Dicke state, GHZ state and trigonometric states. In particular for Werner-like states the rule of sums is found and it is shown that deviations from the symmetricity of such states diminishes the amount of entanglement. For Dicke states the maximal value of bipartite entanglement is achieved when number of excitations is half of the total number of qubits in these states. For trigonometric states the bipartite entanglement is maximal and does not depend on the number of qubits. We also consider entanglement of discrete-continuous systems on the example of entanglement of spin with continuous variables of electron. The relation of entanglement with the mean value of spin is very useful for calculation of entanglement. With the help of this relation we find in explicit form the entanglement of the one spin with the rest in a spin chain during the evolution determined by the Ising Hamiltonian.

Geometry and Entanglement of Two-Qubit States in the Quantum Probabilistic Representation

Julio A. López-Saldívar, Octavio Castaños, Eduardo Nahmad-Achar +3 more

A new geometric representation of qubit and qutrit states based on probability simplexes is used to describe the separability and entanglement properties of density matrices of two qubits. The Peres-Horodecki positive partial transpose (ppt) -criterion and the concurrence inequalities are formulated as the conditions that the introduced probability distributions must satisfy to present entanglement. A four-level system, where one or two states are inaccessible, is considered as an example of applying the elaborated probability approach in an explicit form. The areas of three Triadas of Malevich's squares for entangled states of two qubits are defined through the qutrit state, and the critical values of the sum of their areas are calculated. We always find an interval for the sum of the square areas, which provides the possibility for an experimental checkup of the entanglement of the system in terms of the probabilities.
