Universal relations for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact interactions

Abstract

We present universal relations for a two-dimensional Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions. The derivation of these relations is made possible by obtaining the explicit form of a generalized function---selector---in the momentum representation. The selector implements the short-distance boundary condition between two fermions in a straightforward manner and leads to simple derivations of the universal relations, in the spirit of Tan's original method for the three-dimensional gas.

Universal properties of Fermi gases in arbitrary dimensions

Manuel Valiente, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner, Klaus Mølmer

We consider spin-$1/2$ Fermi gases in arbitrary, integer, or noninteger spatial dimensions, interacting via a Dirac $\ensuremath{\delta}$ potential. We first generalize the method of Tan's distributions and implement short-range boundary conditions to arbitrary dimension and we obtain a set of universal relations for the Fermi gas. Three-dimensional scattering under very general conditions of transversal confinement is described by an effectively reduced-dimensional scattering length, which we show depends on the three-dimensional scattering length in a universal way. Our formula for noninteger dimensions interpolates between the known results in integer dimensions 1, 2, and 3. Without any need to solve the associated multichannel scattering problem, we find that confinement-induced resonances occur in all dimensions different from $D=2$, while reduced-dimensional contacts, related to the tails of the momentum distributions, are connected to the three-dimensional contact by a correction factor of purely geometric origin.

Universal relations for a spin-polarized Fermi gas in two dimensions

Shi-Guo Peng

Abstract We derive the full set of universal relations for spin-polarized Fermi gases with p -wave interaction in two dimensions, simply using the short-range asymptotic behavior of fermion-pair wave functions. For p -wave interactions, an additional contact related to the effective range needs to be introduced, besides the one related to the scattering volume. Since the subleading tail ( k −4 ) of the large-momentum distribution cannot fully be captured by the contacts defined by the adiabatic relations, an extra term resulted from the center-of-mass motions of the pairs gives rise to an additional divergence in the kinetic energy of the system, besides those related to the contacts defined. We show in Tan’s energy theorem that if only two-body correlations are taken into account, all these divergences are reasonably removed, leading to a finite internal energy of the system. In addition, we find that all the other universal relations, such as the high-frequency behavior of the radio-frequency response, short-range behavior of the pair correlation function, generalized virial theorem, and pressure relation, remain unaffected by the center-of-mass motions of the pairs, and are fully governed by the contacts defined by the adiabatic relations. Our results confirm the feasibility of generalizing the contact theory for higher-partial-wave scatterings, and could readily be confirmed in current experiments with ultracold 40 K and 6 Li atoms.

Strongly interacting p -wave Fermi gas in two dimensions: Universal relations and breathing mode

Yi‐Cai Zhang, Shizhong Zhang

The contact is an important concept that characterizes the universal properties of a strongly interacting quantum gas. It appears in both thermodynamic (energy, pressure, etc.) and dynamic quantities (radio-frequency and Bragg spectroscopies, etc.) of the system. Very recently, the concept of contact was extended to higher partial waves; in particular, the $p$-wave contacts have been experimentally probed in recent experiments. So far, discussions on $p$-wave contacts have been limited to three dimensions. In this paper, we generalize the $p$-wave contacts to two dimensions and derive a series of universal relations, including the adiabatic relations, high-momentum distribution, virial theorem, and pressure relation. At the high-temperature and low-density limit, we calculate the $p$-wave contacts explicitly using virial expansion. A formula which directly connects the shift of the breathing-mode frequency and the $p$-wave contacts is given in a harmonically trapped system. Finally, we also derive the relationships between interaction parameters in three- and two-dimensional Fermi gases and discuss possible experimental realization of a two-dimensional Fermi gas with $p$-wave interactions.

Universal relations for the strongly-interacting Fermi gas

Eric Braaten, Lucas Platter

Shina Tan has derived some universal relations that hold for any state of a system consisting of fermions with two spin states that have a large scattering length. These relations involve an intensive quantity called the contact that measures the number of pairs of atoms that are very close together. We show how these relations can be derived in the framework of quantum field theory using standard renormalization methods and the operator product expansion. They allow the contact density to be identified as the expectation value of a local operator constructed out of quantum fields.

Comparative study of one-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions from the viewpoint of universal relations for correlation functions

Yuta Sekino, Shina Tan, Yusuke Nishida

One-dimensional spinless Bose and Fermi gases with contact interactions have the close interrelation via Girardeau's Bose-Fermi mapping, leading to the correspondences in their energy spectra and thermodynamics. However, correlation functions are in general not identical between these systems. We derive in both systems the exact universal relations for correlation functions, which hold for any energy eigenstate and any statistical ensemble of the eigenstates with or without a trapping potential. These relations include the large-momentum behaviors of static structure factors and of momentum distributions as well as energy relations, which connect the sums of kinetic and interaction energies to the momentum distributions. The relations involve two- and three-body contacts, which are the integrals of local pair and triad correlations, respectively. We clarify how the relations for bosons and fermions differ and are connected with each other. In particular, we find that the three-body contact makes no contribution to the bosonic energy relation, but it plays a crucial role in the fermionic one. In addition, we compute the exact momentum distribution for any number of fermions in the unitary limit.

Universal relations for a strongly interacting Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

Eric Braaten, Daekyoung Kang, Lucas Platter

A set of universal relations between various properties of any few-body or many-body system consisting of fermions with two spin states and a large but finite scattering length have been derived by Shina Tan. We derive generalizations of the Tan relations for a two-channel model for fermions near a Feshbach resonance that includes a molecular state whose detuning energy controls the scattering length. We use quantum field theory methods, including renormalization and the operator product expansion, to derive these relations. They reduce to the Tan relations as the scattering length is made increasingly large.
