Abstract

Rényi and von Neumann entropies quantifying the amount of entanglement in ground states of critical spin chains are known to satisfy a universal law which is given by the conformal field theory (CFT) describing their scaling regime. This law can be generalized to excitations described by primary fields in CFT, as was done by Alcaraz et al in 2011 (see reference [1], of which this work is a completion). An alternative derivation is presented, together with numerical verifications of our results in different models belonging to the c = 1, 1/2 universality classes. Oscillations of the Rényi entropy in excited states are also discussed.

Entanglement of Low-Energy Excitations in Conformal Field Theory

Francisco Castilho Alcaraz, Miguel Ibáñez-Berganza, Germán Sierra

In a quantum critical chain, the scaling regime of the energy and momentum of the ground state and low-lying excitations are described by conformal field theory (CFT). The same holds true for the von Neumann and Rényi entropies of the ground state, which display a universal logarithmic behavior depending on the central charge. In this Letter we generalize this result to those excited states of the chain that correspond to primary fields in CFT. It is shown that the nth Rényi entropy is related to a 2n-point correlator of primary fields. We verify this statement for the critical XX and XXZ chains. This result uncovers a new link between quantum information theory and CFT.

Renyi entanglement entropies of descendant states in critical systems with boundaries: conformal field theory and spin chains

Luca Taddia, Fabio Ortolani, Tamás Pálmai

Abstract We discuss the Renyi entanglement entropies of descendant states in critical one-dimensional systems with boundaries, that map to boundary conformal field theories in the scaling limit. We unify the previous conformal-field-theory approaches to describe primary and descendant states in systems with both open and closed boundaries. We provide universal expressions for the first two descendants in the identity family. We apply our technique to critical systems belonging to different universality classes with non-trivial boundary conditions that preserve conformal invariance, and find excellent agreement with numerical results obtained for finite spin chains. We also demonstrate that entanglement entropies are a powerful tool to resolve degeneracy of higher excited states in critical lattice models.

Numerical calculations on the relative entanglement entropy in critical spin chains

Yuya O Nakagawa, Tomonori Ugajin

Abstract We study the relative entanglement entropy (EE) among various primary excited states in two critical spin chains: the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and the transverse field Ising chain at criticality. For the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain, which corresponds to c = 1 free boson conformal field theory (CFT), we numerically calculate the relative EE by exact diagonalization and find a perfect agreement with the predictions by the CFT. For the transverse field Ising chain at criticality, which corresponds to the c = 1 / 2 Ising CFT, we analytically relate its relative EE to that of the S = 1 / 2 XXZ chain and confirm the relation numerically. We also calculate the ‘sandwiched’ Rényi relative EE and again the numerical results agree well with the analytical predictions. Our results are the first direct confirmation of the CFT predictions on the relative EE of the primary excited states in critical spin chains.

Symmetry-Resolved Entanglement Entropy in Critical Free-Fermion Chains

Nick G. Jones

Abstract The symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropy is the Rényi entanglement entropy of each symmetry sector of a density matrix $$\rho $$ ρ . This experimentally relevant quantity is known to have rich theoretical connections to conformal field theory (CFT). For a family of critical free-fermion chains, we present a rigorous lattice-based derivation of its scaling properties using the theory of Toeplitz determinants. We consider a class of critical quantum chains with a microscopic U(1) symmetry; each chain has a low energy description given byNmassless Dirac fermions. For the density matrix, $$\rho _A$$ ρA , of subsystems ofLneighbouring sites we calculate the leading terms in the largeLasymptotic expansion of the symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropies. This follows from a largeLexpansion of the charged moments of $$\rho _A$$ ρA ; we derive $$\mathrm {tr}(\mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha Q_A} \rho _A^n)~=~a \mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha \langle Q_A\rangle } (\sigma L)^{-x}(1+O(L^{-\mu }))$$ tr(eiαQAρAn)=aeiα⟨QA⟩(σL)-x(1+O(L-μ)) , wherea, xand $$\mu $$ μ are universal and $$\sigma $$ σ depends only on theNFermi momenta. We show that the exponentxcorresponds to the expectation from CFT analysis. The error term $$O(L^{-\mu })$$ O(L-μ) is consistent with but weaker than the field theory prediction $$O(L^{-2\mu })$$ O(L-2μ) . However, using further results and conjectures for the relevant Toeplitz determinant, we find excellent agreement with the expansion over CFT operators.

Supersymmetric spin chains with nonmonotonic dispersion relation: Criticality and entanglement entropy

José A. Carrasco, Federico Finkel, Artemio González-López +1 more

We study the critical behavior and the ground-state entanglement of a large class of su(1|1) supersymmetric spin chains with a general (not necessarily monotonic) dispersion relation. We show that this class includes several relevant models, with both short- and long-range interactions of a simple form. We determine the low temperature behavior of the free energy per spin, and deduce that the models considered have a critical phase in the same universality class as a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge equal to the number of connected components of the Fermi sea. We also study the Rényi entanglement entropy of the ground state, deriving its asymptotic behavior as the block size tends to infinity. In particular, we show that this entropy exhibits the logarithmic growth characteristic of (1+1)-dimensional CFTs and one-dimensional (fermionic) critical lattice models, with a central charge consistent with the low-temperature behavior of the free energy. Our results confirm the widely believed conjecture that the critical behavior of fermionic lattice models is completely determined by the topology of their Fermi surface.
