Abstract

We study ultracold bosons in three dimensions with an anisotropic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We first carry out the exact summation of ladder diagrams for the two-boson $t$ matrix at zero energy. Then, with the $t$ matrix as the effective interaction, we find the ground-state phase diagrams of bosons in mean field as a function of the spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropy, and the scattering lengths between particles in the same and in different pseudospin states. The resulting phase diagrams have much richer structures than those obtained using mean-field couplings, exhibiting three different phases: a plane-wave condensate, a striped condensate, and an unstable phase. The differences between the present approach using the $t$ matrix compared to using mean-field couplings is significant for large scattering lengths, large spin-orbit-coupling strength, or small anisotropy.

Ground State of Bose–Fermi Mixture with Spin–Orbit Coupling

Ryohei Sakamoto, Yosuke Ono, Emiko Arahata +1 more

We study a mixture of Bose and Fermi gases with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin–orbit coupling. The phase diagram of bosons with the same coupling was already studied in a mean-field approximation and shown to have three kinds of ground states. In the present study, the ground state of the spin–orbit coupled Bose–Fermi mixture is investigated in the same approach to analyze effects of introducing fermions to the bosonic system. The result shows that even a small amount of fermions could drastically change the phase diagram of the bosons.

Finite-temperature phases of two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosons

Eiji Kawasaki, Markus Holzmann

We determine the finite-temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional bosons with two hyperfine (pseudospin) states coupled via a Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction using classical field Monte Carlo calculations. For anisotropic spin-orbit coupling, we find a transition to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless superfluid phase with quasi-long-range order. We show that the spin order of the quasicondensate is driven by the anisotropy of the interparticle interaction, favoring either a homogeneous plane-wave state or stripe phase with broken translational symmetry. Both phases show characteristic behavior in the algebraically decaying spin-density correlation function. For a fully isotropic interparticle interaction, our calculations indicate a fractionalized quasicondensate where the mean-field degeneracy of the plane-wave and stripe phase remains robust against critical fluctuations. In the case of fully isotropic spin-orbit coupling, the circular degeneracy of the single-particle ground state destroys the algebraic ordered phase in the thermodynamic limit, but a crossover remains for finite-size systems.

Spotlighting phase separation in Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in two dimensions

S. Bhuvaneswari, K. Nithyanandan, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the system of spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) with Rabi coupling in quasi-two dimensions characterized by unequal Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings. The ground state properties and the phase diagram of the system are studied within the mean-field approximation at T = 0. The energy-momentum dispersion relation corresponding to the single-particle ground state exhibits an infinitely degenerate Rashba ring, whose degeneracy is destroyed by the Rabi coupling, leading to a single-point lowest energy. The effect of Rabi coupling and interaction in the system show up three different phases, namely stripe, plane wave and zero momentum phase. At a particular parametric condition, the system admits a critical point separating all three different phases, known as the tri-critical point. For further insight, the momentum distribution, the energy and the longitudinal/transverse spin polarization corresponding to the quantum phases are comprehensively discussed.

Stability of Ultracold Atomic Bose Condensates with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling against Quantum and Thermal Fluctuations

Tomoki Ozawa, Gordon Baym

We study the stability of Bose condensates with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in three dimensions against quantum and thermal fluctuations. The ground state depletion of the plane-wave condensate due to quantum fluctuations is, as we show, finite, and therefore the condensate is stable. We also calculate the corresponding shift of the ground state energy. Although the system cannot condense in the absence of interparticle interactions, by estimating the number of excited particles we show that interactions stabilize the condensate even at nonzero temperature. Unlike in the usual Bose gas, the normal phase is not kinematically forbidden at any temperature; calculating the free energy of the normal phase at finite temperature, and comparing with the free energy of the condensed state, we infer that generally the system is condensed at zero temperature, and undergoes a transition to normal at nonzero temperature.

Ground state phases in Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Thangarasu Sriraman, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the role of coupling parameters on the ground state phases of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus coupling strength with Rabi mixing using quasi-one-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. By considering weak repulsive inter- and intra-species interactions between the condensate atoms, we investigate the contribution of spin-orbit and Rabi coupling parameters on the phases. We find that for a finite Rabi coupling strength, the system undergoes a phase transition from double plane-wave phase to stripe wave phase at a critical spin-orbit coupling strength.

SPIN-ORBIT-COUPLED BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

Yun Li, Giovanni Italo Martone, S. Stringari

The recent realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling represents an outstanding achievement in the physics of ultracold quantum gases. In this review we explore the properties of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strengths. This system presents a rich phase diagram, which exhibits a tricritical point separating a zero-momentum phase, a spin-polarized plane-wave phase, and a stripe phase. In the stripe phase translational invariance is spontaneously broken, in analogy with supersolids. Spin-orbit coupling also strongly affects the dynamics of the system. In particular, the excitation spectrum exhibits intriguing features, including the suppression of the sound velocity, the emergence of a roton minimum in the plane-wave phase, and the appearance of a double gapless band structure in the stripe phase. Finally, we discuss a combined procedure to make the stripes visible and stable, thus allowing for a direct experimental detection.
