Abstract

We study dynamical recurrences of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical crystal subject to a periodic external driving force. The recurrence behavior of the condensate is analyzed as a function of time close to nonlinear resonances occurring in the classical counterpart. Our mathematical formalism for the recurrence time scales is presented as delicate recurrences, which take place, for instance, when the lattice is perturbed weakly and robust recurrences, which may manifest themselves for a sufficiently strong external driving force. The analysis not only is valid for a dilute condensate, but also is applicable for the strongly interacting homogeneous condensate provided; the external modulation causes no significant change in the density profile of the condensate. We explain the parametric dependence of the dynamical recurrence times, which can easily be realized in laboratory experiments. In addition, we find good agreement between the obtained analytical results and the numerical calculations.

Cold Atoms in Driven Optical Lattices

M. Ayub

The center of mass dynamics of cold atoms and the Bose-Einstein condensate in one dimensional optical lattice is considered both in the absence and in the presence of external forcing. We discuss three situations for matter waves: first, the cold atoms; second, sufficiently dilute condensate where the dynamics are governed by the single particle wave packet dynamics; third, strong interaction regime, where, inter-atomic interaction can no longer be ignored. The analytical formalism developed for the two regimes, namely, deep optical lattice and shallow optical lattice. Parametric dependencies of energy spectrum and classical period, revival time and super revival are explained for the two regimes. The dynamics of condensate in driven optical lattice crystal are analyzed by studying dynamical stability of the condensate. The stability is determined by the dispersion behavior of the condensate excited in driven optical lattice. The recurrence behavior of the condensate close to the nonlinear resonances is analyzed as a function of time for delicate recurrences which take place for instance when lattice is weakly perturbed and robust recurrences which may manifest themselves for sufficiently strong external driving force. The analysis is not only valid for dilute condensate but also applicable for strongly interacting homogeneous condensate provided, the external modulation causes no significant change in density profile of the condensate. We explain parametric dependence of the dynamical recurrence times which can easily be realized in laboratory experiments. In addition, we find a good agreement between the obtained analytical results and numerical calculations. The stability of condensate is also explored in driven optical lattice numerically.

Dynamical instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with higher-order interactions in an optical potential through a variational approach

Étienne Wamba, Subramaniyan Sabari, Kuppuswamy Porsezian +2 more

We investigate the dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with higher-order interactions immersed in an optical lattice with weak driving harmonic potential. For this, we compute both analytically and numerically a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with higher-order nonlinearity and external potentials generated by magnetic and optical fields. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. Through an effective potential, we obtain the modulational instability condition of BECs and discuss the effect of the higher-order interaction in the dynamics of the condensates in presence of optical potential. We perform direct numerical simulations to support our analytical results, and good agreement is found.

Dynamics of periodically driven matter waves with negative effective mass

Matthew Mitchell, Andrea Di Carli, G. Sinuco-León +3 more

We experimentally study the dynamics of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of cesium atoms in a 1D optical lattice with a periodic driving force. The time evolution is analysed after a quench of the driving strength which leads to an inversion of the dispersion relation in the lattice band and to a redistribution of atoms in the 1st Brillouin zone (BZ). We use the concept of a negative effective mass and the resulting changes to the effective trapping potential and interaction strength to explain the time evolution of wave packets with weak repulsive interaction. In addition, the formation of stable wave packets with a negative effective mass is observed at the center of the BZ, and we interpret these as gap solitons in a periodically driven system.

THEORY OF NONLINEAR MATTER WAVES IN OPTICAL LATTICES

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, V. V. Konotop

We consider several effects of the matter wave dynamics which can be observed in Bose–Einstein condensates embedded into optical lattices. For low-density condensates, we derive approximate evolution equations, the form of which depends on relation among the main spatial scales of the system. Reduction of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation to a lattice model (the tight-binding approximation) is also presented. Within the framework of the obtained models, we consider modulational instability of the condensate, solitary and periodic matter waves, paying special attention to different limits of the solutions, i.e. to smooth movable gap solitons and to strongly localized discrete modes. We also discuss how the Feshbach resonance, a linear force and lattice defects affect the nonlinear matter waves.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Driven Double-well

HE Xiao-yan

The dynamic of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well under a monochromatic external driving force is studied. With the different driving intensity and frequency, the motion of the classical particle can be either regular or chaotic or even both of them. The equation that describes the Bose-Einstein condensates is Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Firstly, the study gets the Gross-Pitaevskii equation′s classical form by a superposition of the single well wave function, then, studies the dynamics of their phase space and the self-trapping behavior of Bose-Einstein condensate under periodic driving force.

Pattern formation in driven condensates

Ivana Vasić, D. Vudragović, Mihaela Carina Raportaru +1 more

The onset of pattern formation in a spatially homogeneous system subjected to external driving is an important topic in various scientific fields. A celebrated classical example is the Faraday instability, where a vertically oscillated fluid surface undergoes a parametric resonance, giving rise to standing waves that self-organize into regular spatial patterns. Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide an ideal quantum-mechanical platform for studying pattern-forming mechanisms due to their exceptional degree of experimental control. As a compressible state of quantum matter, a condensate responds sensitively to external perturbations, including time-periodic modulation of interactions, trapping potentials, or external fields. These features make BECs particularly well suited for exploring driven nonequilibrium phases and pattern formation. In this chapter, we review the remarkable progress achieved in this field over the past two decades. We begin with the first theoretical proposal predicting parametric instabilities and emergent Faraday waves in driven condensates. We then discuss key experimental and theoretical breakthroughs that confirmed these predictions and refined the understanding of the underlying mechanisms. This line of research has culminated in the recent observation of a stabilized square lattice pattern in a periodically driven BEC confined in a two-dimensional geometry. This driven superfluid state with superposed density modulation was shown to exhibit some features of a supersolid state.
