Classical dynamics of quantum entanglement

Abstract

We analyze numerically the dynamical generation of quantum entanglement in a system of two interacting particles, started in a coherent separable state, for decreasing values of ℏ. As ℏ→0 the entanglement entropy, computed at any finite time, converges to a finite nonzero value. The limit law that rules the time dependence of entropy is well reproduced by purely classical computations. Its general features can be explained by simple classical arguments, which expose the different ways entanglement is generated in systems that are classically chaotic or regular.

Entanglement Dynamics and Classical Complexity

Jiaozi Wang, Barbara Dietz, Dario Rosa +1 more

We study the dynamical generation of entanglement for a two-body interacting system, starting from a separable coherent state. We show analytically that in the quasiclassical regime the entanglement growth rate can be simply computed by means of the underlying classical dynamics. Furthermore, this rate is given by the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, which characterizes the dynamical complexity of classical motion. Our results, illustrated by numerical simulations on a model of coupled rotators, establish in the quasiclassical regime a link between the generation of entanglement, a purely quantum phenomenon, and classical complexity.

Dynamical entanglement as a signature of chaos in the semiclassical limit

M. Lombardi, A. Matzkin

The relationship between classically chaotic dynamics and the entanglement properties of the corresponding quantum system is examined in the semiclassical limit. Numerical results are computed for a modified kicked top, keeping the classical dynamics constant while investigating the entanglement for several versions of the corresponding quantum system characterized by a different value of the effective Planck constant ℏ eff. Our findings indicate that as ℏ eff → 0, the apparent signatures of classical chaos in the entanglement properties, such as characteristic oscillations in the time-dependence of the linear entropy, can also be obtained in the regular regime. These results suggest that entanglement is not a universal marker of chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system.

Entanglement dynamics via semiclassical propagators in systems of two spins

A. D. Ribeiro, R. M. Angelo

We analyze the dynamical generation of entanglement in systems of two interacting spins initially prepared in a product of spin coherent states. For arbitrary time-independent Hamiltonians, we derive a semiclassical expression for the purity of the reduced density matrix as a function of time. The final formula, subsidiary to the linear entropy, shows that the short-time dynamics of entanglement depends exclusively on the stability of trajectories governed by the underlying classical Hamiltonian. In addition, this semiclassical measure is shown to reproduce the general properties of its quantum counterpart and give the expected result in the large spin limit. The accuracy of the semiclassical formula is further illustrated in a problem of phase exchange for two particles of spin $j$.

Entanglement spreading and oscillation

Mitsuhiro Nishida, Masahiro Nozaki A, Yuji Y. Sugimoto +1 more

Abstract We study dynamics of quantum entanglement in smooth global quenches with a finite rate, by computing the time evolution of entanglement entropy in 1 + 1 dimensional free scalar theory with time-dependent masses which start from a nonzero value at early time and either crosses or approaches zero. The time-dependence is chosen so that the quantum dynamics is exactly solvable. If the quenches asymptotically approach a critical point at late time, the early-time and late-time entropies are proportional to the time and subsystem size respectively. Their proportionality coefficients are determined by scales: in a fast limit, an initial correlation length; in a slow limit, an effective scale defined when adiabaticity breaks down. If the quenches cross a critical point, the time evolution of entropy is characterized by the scales: the initial correlation length in the fast limit and the effective correlation length in the slow limit. The entropy oscillates, and the entanglement oscillation comes from a coherence between right-moving and left-moving waves if we measure the entropy after time characterized by the quench rate. The periodicity of the late-time oscillation is consistent with the periodicity of the oscillation of zero modes which are zero-momentum value of two point functions of a fundamental field and its conjugate momentum.

Scattering-induced dynamical entanglement and the quantum-classical correspondence

M. Lombardi, A. Matzkin

The generation of entanglement produced by a local potential interaction in a bipartite system is investigated. The degree of entanglement is contrasted with the underlying classical dynamics for a Rydberg molecule (a charged particle colliding on a kicked top). Entanglement is seen to depend on the structure of classical phase-space rather than on the global dynamical regime. As a consequence, regular classical dynamics can in certain circumstances be associated with higher entanglement generation than chaotic dynamics. In addition, quantum effects also come into play: for example, partial revivals, which are expected to persist in the semiclassical limit, affect the long-time behaviour of the reduced linear entropy. These results suggest that entanglement may not be a pertinent universal signature of chaos.

Long-time entanglement in the Quantum Walk

Gonzalo Abal, R. Donangelo, Hugo Fort

Abstract. The coin-position entanglement generated by the evolution operator of a discrete–time quantum walk is quantified, using the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator (entropy of entanglement). In the case of a single walker, the entropy of entanglement converges, in the long time limit, to a well defined value which depends on the initial state. Exact expressions are obtained for local and non-local initial conditions. We also discuss the asymptotic bi-partite entanglement generated by non-separable coin operations for two coherent quantum walkers. In this case, the entropy of entanglement is observed to increase logarithmically with time. 1.
