Transverse momentum transfer in atom-light scattering

Abstract

We predict a photon Hall effect in the optical cross section of atomic hydrogen, which is caused by the interference between an electric-quadrupole transition and an electric-dipole transition from the ground state to $3{D}_{3/2}$ and $3{P}_{3/2}$. This induces a magnetotransverse acceleration comparable to a fraction of $g$.

Photon Hall scattering from alkaline-earth-like atoms and alkali-like ions

Bart A. van Tiggelen, David Wilkowski

We investigate the possibility of observing a magneto-transverse scattering of photons from alkaline-earth-like atoms as well as alkali-like ions and provide orders of magnitude. The transverse magneto-scattering is physically induced by the interference between two possible quantum transitions of an outer electron in a S state, one dispersive electric-dipole transition to a P orbital state and a second resonant electric-quadrupole transition to a D orbital state. In contrast with previous mechanisms proposed for such an atomic photonic Hall effect, no real photons are scattered by the electric-dipole allowed transition, which increases the ratio of Hall current to background photons significantly. The main experimental challenge is to overcome the small detection threshold, with only 10−5 photons scattered per atom per second.

Spectroscopy of electric dipole and quadrupole transitions in Ra + 224

Spencer Kofford, Haoran Li, Robert Kwapisz +5 more

We report on spectroscopy of the low-lying electronic transitions in $^{224}\mathrm{Ra}^{+}$. We measured the frequencies of the $^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}P_{1/2}$ cooling transition, the $^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}D_{5/2}$ clock transition, the $^{2}D_{3/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}P_{3/2}$ electric dipole transition, and the $^{2}D_{5/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}P_{3/2}$ cleanout transition. From these measurements we calculate the frequencies of the $^{2}D_{3/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}P_{1/2}$ repump transition, the $^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}D_{3/2}$ electric quadrupole transition, and the $^{2}S_{1/2}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}^{2}P_{3/2}$ electric dipole transition. The ion's low charge-to-mass ratio and convenient wavelengths make ${}^{224}{\mathrm{Ra}}^{+}$ a promising optical clock candidate.

Observation of interference between quadrupole and dipole transitions in low-energy (2-eV) photoionization from a sodium Rydberg state

Gerd Leuchs, Stephen J. Smith, S. N. Dixit +1 more

A measurement of the azimuthal dependence of the angular distribution of photoelectrons from ${13}^{3}$${\mathrm{D}}_{3/2}$-state sodium atoms aligned transversely to the direction of propagation of, and parallel to the direction of linear polarization of, 532-nm ionizing laser radiation, is described. The measured distribution is I(\ensuremath{\varphi})=1+0.026(6)cos\ensuremath{\varphi} where \ensuremath{\varphi}=0 is the direction of the laser beam. This departure from the symmetry I(\ensuremath{\varphi})=const predicted for a pure electric dipole transition is represented theoretically as due to a dipole-quadrupole interference term.
