Quantum renormalization group for ground-state fidelity

Abstract

Ground-state fidelity (GSF) and quantum renormalization group (QRG) theory have proven to be useful tools in the study of quantum critical systems. Here we lay out a general, unified formalism of GSF and QRG; specifically, we propose a method for calculating GSF through QRG, obviating the need for calculating or approximating ground states. This method thus enhances the characterization of quantum criticality as well as scaling analysis of relevant properties with system size. We illustrate the formalism in the one-dimensional Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) and the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ( XXZ ) model. Explicitly, we find the scaling behavior of the GSF for the ITF model in both small- and large-size limits, the corresponding critical exponents, the exact value of the GSF in the thermodynamic limit and a closed form for the GSF for arbitrary size and system parameters. In the case of the XXZ model, we also present an analytic expression for the GSF, which captures well the criticality of the model, hence excluding doubts that GSF might be an insufficient tool for signaling criticality in this model.

Fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions: finite-size scaling for the quantum Ising model in a transverse field

Huan-Qiang Zhou, Jian-Hui Zhao, Bo Li

We analyze the fidelity per lattice site for two different ground states of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field near the critical point. It is found that, in the thermodynamic limit, the fidelity per lattice site is singular, and the derivative of its logarithmic function with respect to the transverse field strength is logarithmically divergent at the critical point. The scaling behavior is confirmed numerically by performing a finite-size scaling analysis for systems of different sizes, consistent with the conformal invariance at the critical point. This allows us to extract the correlation length critical exponent, which turns out to be universal in the sense that the correlation length critical exponent does not depend on either the anisotropic parameter or the transverse field strength.

Quantum Renormalization Group for Ground State Quantum Discord

Javad Vahedi

Using the quantum renormalization group, we have studied a quantum phase transition via studying the ground state quantum discord. Our results show that the characterization of quantum criticality, as well as the scaling analysis of relevant properties with system size for the Ising model in the transverse field based on the quantum renormalization group, have a similar behavior to the concurrence, which was studied in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A 76, 060304(R) (2007)].

Quantum critical scaling of fidelity susceptibility

A. Fabricio Albuquerque, Fabien Alet, Clément Sire +1 more

The behavior of the ground-state fidelity susceptibility in the vicinity of a quantum critical point is investigated. We derive scaling relations describing its singular behavior in the quantum critical regime. Unlike in previous studies, these relations are solely expressed in terms of conventional critical exponents. We also describe in detail a quantum Monte Carlo scheme that allows for the evaluation of the fidelity susceptibility for a large class of many-body systems and apply it in the study of the quantum phase transition for the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice. Finite-size analysis applied to the so-obtained numerical results confirms the validity of our scaling relations. Furthermore, we analyze the properties of a closely related quantity, the ground-state energy's second derivative, which can be numerically evaluated in a particularly efficient way. The usefulness of both quantities as alternative indicators of quantum criticality is examined.

Unified renormalization-group approach to the thermodynamic and ground-state properties of quantum lattice systems

Attilio L. Stella, Carlo Vanderzande, Raf Dekeyser

It is shown that some recently proposed iterative approaches to the ground state of quantum systems can be obtained as zero-temperature limits of free-energy-preserving renormalization transformations, if the perturbative expansion is handled in the appropriate way. Besides giving new insight into the ground-state approaches and their mutual relationships, these results allow us to perform consistent approximate calculations of the free energy at all temperatures and to get global descriptions of the critical properties. Free-energy and specific-heat calculations are reported for $\mathrm{XY}$ and Heisenberg spin-\textonehalf{} chains and for the triangular $\mathrm{XY}$ model. It is also demonstrated how this extension into finite temperatures allows us to compute in a consistent way the $z$ exponent, and to obtain substantial improvement in the numerical values for the ground-state energy density of the transverse Ising model.

Quantum Renormalization of Spin Squeezing in Spin Chains

Leila Balazadeh, G. Najarbashi, Ali Tavana

By employing quantum renormalization group (QRG) method, we investigate quantum phase transitions (QPT) in the Ising transverse field (ITF) model and in the XXZ Heisenberg model, with and without Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interaction, on a periodic chain of N lattice sites. We adopt a new approach called spin squeezing as an indicator of QPT. Spin squeezing, through analytical expression of a spin squeezing parameter, is calculated after each step of QRG. As the scale of the system becomes larger, (after many QRG steps), the ground state (GS) spin squeezing parameters show an abrupt change at a quantum critical point (QCP). Moreover, in all of the studied models, the first derivative of the spin squeezing parameter with respect to the control parameter is discontinuous, which is a signature of QPT. The spin squeezing parameters develop their saturated values after enough QRG iterations. The divergence exponent of the first derivative of the spin squeezing parameter in the near vicinity of the QCP is associated with the critical exponent of the correlation length.
