Abstract

We consider a spin-1/2 tube (a three-leg ladder with periodic boundary conditions) with a Hamiltonian given by two projection operators-one on the triangles and the other on the square plaquettes on the side of the tube-that can be written in terms of Heisenberg and four-spin ring exchange interactions. We identify 3 phases: (i) for strongly antiferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, an exact ground state with a gapped spectrum can be given as an alternation of spin and chirality singlet bonds between nearest triangles; (ii) for ferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, we recover the phase of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg chain; (iii) between these two phases, a gapless incommensurate phase exists. We construct an exact ground state with two deconfined domain walls and a gapless excitation spectrum at the quantum phase transition point between the incommensurate and dimerized phases.

Gapped state in three-leg $S=1/2$ Heisenberg tube

Satoshi Nishimoto, Mitsuhiro Arikawa

We study the ground state of three-leg $S=1/2$ Heisenberg tube using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The dimerization order-parameter and spin-excitation gap are calculated in a wide range of leg exchange interactions. We confirm that a gapped state with the dimerization order is realized even when the leg exchange interactions are ferromagnetic. Furthermore, the topological configuration of spin-singlet pairs in the ordered state is determined from the results of the Berry phase of each spin coupling as well as the structure factor of singlet-singlet correlation functions. We find that there exist three kinds of configurations of the valence-bond states depending on the ratio of leg and rung exchange interactions.

Quantum phases of a frustrated four-leg spin tube

Marcelo Arlego, W. Brenig, Yousef Rahnavard +3 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg tube. Using a variety of complementary techniques, namely, density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, Schwinger boson mean-field theory, quantum Monte Carlo, and series expansion, we explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange. In contrast to unfrustrated four-leg tubes, we uncover a rich phase diagram. Apart from the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the limit of decoupled legs, this comprises several gapped ground states, namely, a plaquette, an incommensurate, and an antiferromagnetic quasispin-2 chain phase. The transitions between these phases are analyzed in terms of total energy and static structure factor calculations and are found to be of (weak) first order. Despite the absence of long-range order in the quantum case, remarkable similarities to the classical phase diagram are uncovered, with the exception of the icommensurate regime, which is strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations. In the limit of large leg exchange, the tube exhibits a deconfinement crossover from gapped magnon-like excitations to spinons.

Dimerization transition of three-leg Heisenberg tube

Satoshi Nishimoto, Mitsuhiro Arikawa

We study the ground-state properties of three-leg S = 1/2 Heisenberg tube with antiferromagnetic interleg couplings J ⊥ (> 0). The spin gap, dimerization-order parameter, and Berry phase are calculated with the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that the system is spontaneously dimerized and all the spin excitations are gapped whether intraleg couplings J || are antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic. Also, the phase diagram is divided into three regimes according to topological configuration of the spin-singlet pairs: (i) Haldane-gap-like regime for J ⊥ / J || < 0, (ii) intraleg-singlet regime 0 < J ⊥ J || ≤ 5, and (iii) intrarung-singlet regime for J ⊥ J || ≥ 5.

Ground states of spin- 1 2 triangular antiferromagnets in a magnetic field

Ru Chen, Hyejin Ju, Hong‐Chen Jiang +2 more

We use a combination of numerical density matrix renormalization group calculations and several analytical approaches to comprehensively study a simplified model for a spatially anisotropic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet: the three-leg triangular spin tube (TST). The model is described by three Heisenberg chains, with exchange constant $J$, coupled antiferromagnetically with exchange constant ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ along the diagonals of the ladder system, with periodic boundary conditions in the shorter direction. Here, we determine the full phase diagram of this model as a function of both spatial anisotropy (between the isotropic and decoupled chain limits) and magnetic field. We find a rich phase diagram, which is remarkably dominated by quantum states: the phase corresponding to the classical ground state appears only in an exceedingly small region. Among the dominant phases generated by quantum effects are commensurate and incommensurate coplanar quasiordered states, which appear in the vicinity of the isotropic region for most fields, and in the high-field region for most anisotropies. The coplanar states, while not classical ground states, can at least be understood semiclassically. Even more strikingly, the largest region of phase space is occupied by a spin density wave phase, which has incommensurate collinear correlations along the field. This phase has no semiclassical analog, and may be ascribed to enhanced one-dimensional fluctuations due to frustration. Cutting across the phase diagram is a magnetization plateau, with a gap to all excitations and ``up-up-down'' spin order, with a quantized magnetization equal to $\frac{1}{3}$ of the saturation value. In the TST, this plateau extends almost but not quite to the decoupled chains limit. Most of the above features are expected to carry over to the two-dimensional system, which we also discuss. At low field, a dimerized phase appears, which is particular to the one-dimensional nature of the TST, and which can be understood from quantum Berry phase arguments.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 12 frustrated three-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder

Xiaoqun Wang, Ningsheng Zhu, Changfeng Chen

Using the density matrix renormalization group method we have studied the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 frustrated three-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder, and identified two phases corresponding to the spin-3/2 chain and the standard spin ladder. Varying the diagonal coupling ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ leads to a quantum phase transition from one ground state to the other, but does not alter the gapless nature of the excitation spectra. On the phase boundary, the degenerate ground states form a chiral spin liquid with a central charge $c=2.$ The critical value of ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ is insensitive to the number of legs in the ladder, suggesting that a quantum phase transition may occur at ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}=0.6$ for the isotropic spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice.

Singlet quantum phases of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with ferromagnetic (F) exchange in legs and alternating F-AF exchange in rungs

Monalisa Chatterjee, Manoranjan Kumar, Z. G. Soos

Abstract Ladders with 2 N spins-1/2 and singlet ( S = 0) ground states are studied numerically using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. The curvatures E ″ ( s ) of states with the lowest energy E ( s ) at spin s = S / N ≤ 1 are obtained in the thermodynamic limit. All states have E ″ ( s ) > 0 in two phases, one with strong F exchange J F in rungs, the other with strong F exchange J L in legs. The Dimer phase with frustrated F exchanges has one or more states with E ″ ( s ) < 0. All three phases have finite gaps to the lowest triplet state. The ladder at J F → ∞ is adiabatically connected to the spin-1 Heisenberg AF chain, and at J L → ∞ to the J 1 − J 2 model.
