Abstract

A small value of the spin gap in quantum antiferromagnets with strong frustration makes them susceptible to nominally small deviations from the ideal Heisenberg model. One such perturbation, the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, is an important perturbation for the $S=1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet, one of the current candidates for a quantum-disordered ground state. We study the influence of the DM term in a related one-dimensional system, the sawtooth chain, which has valence-bond order in its ground state. Through a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that a relatively weak DM coupling, $0.115J$, is sufficient to destroy the valence-bond order, close the spin gap, and turn the system into a Luttinger liquid with algebraic spin correlations. A similar mechanism may be at work in the kagome antiferromagnet.

Gapless spin liquid in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Chih‐Yuan Lee, Bruce Normand, Ying-Jer Kao

A preponderance of evidence suggests that the ground state of the nearest-neighbor $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is a gapless spin liquid. Many candidate materials for the realization of this model possess in addition a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We study this system by tensor-network methods and deduce that a weak but finite DM interaction is required to destabilize the gapless spin-liquid state. The critical magnitude, ${D}_{c}/J\ensuremath{\simeq}0.012(2)$, lies well below the DM strength proposed in the kagome material herbertsmithite, indicating a need to reassess the apparent spin-liquid behavior reported in this system.

Spontaneous order in the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagomé lattice due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy

Jozef Strečka, Lucia Čanová

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagomé (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping correspondence to the simple spin-1/2 Ising model on Kagomé lattice. It is shown that the disordered spin liquid state, which otherwise occurs in the ground state of this frustrated spin system on assumption that there is a sufficiently strong antiferromagnetic intra-trimer interaction, is eliminated from the ground state by arbitrary but non-zero Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy.

The - antiferromagnet on the square lattice with Dzyaloshinskii - Moriya interaction: an exact diagonalization study

Andreas Voigt, Johannes Richter

We examine the influence of an anisotropic interaction term of Dzyaloshinskii - Moriya (DM) type on the ground state ordering of the - spin- Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. For the DM term we consider several symmetries corresponding to different crystal structures. For the pure - model there are strong indications for a quantum spin liquid in the region of . We find that a DM interaction influences the breakdown of the conventional antiferromagnetic order by (i) shifting the spin-liquid region, (ii) changing the isotropic character of the ground state towards anisotropic correlations and (iii) creating for certain symmetries a net ferromagnetic moment.

Spatially anisotropic kagome antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Vladimir A. Zyuzin, Gregory A. Fiete

We theoretically study the spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction using a renormalization-group analysis in the quasi-one-dimensional limit. We identify the various temperature and energy scales for ordering in the system. For a very weak DM interaction, we find a low-temperature spiral phase with the plane of the spiral selected by the DM interaction. This phase is similar to a previously identified phase in the absence of the DM interaction. However, above a critical DM interaction strength we find a transition to a phase with coexisting antiferromagnetic and dimer order, reminiscent of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic systems with a uniform DM interaction. Our results help shed light on the fate of two-dimensional systems with both strong interactions and significant spin-orbit coupling.

Spinon quantum spin Hall state in the kagome antiferromagnet with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Li-Wei He, Jian-Xin Li

We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on kagome lattice, making use of the variational Monte Carlo technique. An exotic quantum spin state is found to arise from a melting of the $\mathbit{Q}=0$ long-range magnetic order by a topological transition, when a small anisotropic third-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction is turned on. This state is a gapped quantum spin liquid, characterized by a topological order with ground-state degeneracy ${n}_{g}=4$ and topological entanglement entropy $\ensuremath{\gamma}=ln2$, suggesting it is an Abelian topological phase. Furthermore, the Chern numbers of the spin-up (-down) spinon occupied bands of this state are ${C}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, respectively. From this perspective, this state is also a time-reversal symmetric (total Chern number ${C}_{\text{total}}=0$) topological insulator with spinons as the chiral edge states, which carry opposite spin and move in the opposite direction. It is analogous to the quantum spin Hall state but the spin current is carried by deconfined spinons in a quantum spin liquid, and so is dubbed as the spinon quantum spin Hall state.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensionality in a kagome magnet: A simple route to complexity

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, Kun Yang +3 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum $\text{spin-}1/2$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with first- $({J}_{1}<0)$, second- $({J}_{2}<0)$, and third-neighbor interactions $({J}_{d}>0)$ by means of analytical low-energy field theory and numerical density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies. The results offer a consistent picture of the ${J}_{d}\text{-dominant}$ regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic interchain interactions ${J}_{1,2}$. When either ${J}_{1}$ or ${J}_{2}$ is much stronger than the other one, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1, and cuboc2. These cuboc states host noncoplanar long-ranged magnetic order and possess finite scalar spin chirality. However, in the compensated regime ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{\simeq}{J}_{2}$, a valence bond crystal phase emerges between the two cuboc phases. We find excellent agreement between an analytical theory based on coupled spin chains and unbiased DMRG calculations, including at a very detailed level of comparison of the structure of the valence bond crystal state. To our knowledge, this is the first such comprehensive understanding of a highly frustrated two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet. We find no evidence of either the one-dimensional gapless spin liquid or the chiral spin liquids, which were previously suggested by parton mean-field theories.
