Abstract

We investigate the long-term dynamics of spin textures prepared by cooling unmagnetized spinor gases of $F=1$ ${}^{87}$Rb to quantum degeneracy, observing domain coarsening and a strong dependence of the equilibration dynamics on the quadratic Zeeman shift $q$. For small values of $|q|$, the textures arrive at a configuration independent of the initial spin-state composition, characterized by large length-scale spin domains and the establishment of easy-axis (negative $q$) or easy-plane (positive $q$) magnetic anisotropy. For larger $|q|$, equilibration is delayed as the spin-state composition of the degenerate spinor gas remains close to its initial value. These observations support the mean-field equilibrium phase diagram predicted for a ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and also illustrate that equilibration is achieved under a narrow range of experimental settings, making the $F=1$ ${}^{87}$Rb gas more suitable for studies of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics.

Periodic spin textures in a degenerate F=1 Rb87 spinor Bose gas

Mukund Vengalattore, Jennie Guzman, Sabrina R. Leslie +2 more

We report on the spin textures produced by cooling unmagnetized $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ $F=1$ spinor gases into the regime of quantum degeneracy. At low temperatures, magnetized textures form that break translational symmetry and display short-range periodic magnetic order characterized by one- or two-dimensional spatial modulations with wavelengths much smaller than the extent of the quasi-two-dimensional degenerate gas. Spin textures produced upon cooling spin mixtures with a nonzero initial magnetic quadrupole moment also show ferromagnetic order that, at low temperature, coexists with the spatially modulated structure.

Condensing Magnons in a Degenerate Ferromagnetic Spinor Bose Gas

Fang Fang, Ryan Olf, Shun Wu +2 more

We observe the quasicondensation of magnon excitations within an F=1 ^{87}Rb spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas. Magnons are pumped into a ferromagnetically ordered gas, allowed to equilibrate to a nondegenerate distribution, and then cooled evaporatively at near-constant net longitudinal magnetization, whereupon they condense. The critical magnon number, spatial distribution, and momentum distribution indicate that magnons condense in a potential that is uniform within the volume of the ferromagnetic condensate. The macroscopic transverse magnetization produced by the degenerate magnon gas remains inhomogeneous within the ∼10 s equilibration time accessed in our experiment, and includes signatures of Mermin-Ho spin textures that appear as phase singularities in the magnon quasicondensate wave function.

Investigating non-equilibrium phenomena in spinor antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

Anshuman Vinit

This thesis discusses non-equilibrium phenomena in antiferromagnetic spinor quantum gases. We investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the quench dynamics of antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in the vicinity of a zero temperature quantum phase transition. A microwave dressing field was used as a novel tool to access the polar to antiferrmagnetic quantum phase transition at the quadratic Zeeman shift, q=0. By performing instantaneous quenches across the phase transition,a dynamical instability was induced in the atomic cloud. This lead to pair formation and rapid amplification of spin +/-1 atoms through spin-mixing collisions. The spatial ordering kinetics in the vicinity of the phase transition was quantified by performing the local spin measurement. The coarsening dynamics was observed for the instability for q < 0, as it nucleated small domains that grew to the axial size of the cloud. Rich nonequilibrium behavior was observed in the form of growth and decay of both nematic and magnetic spin waves, following the quench. The spatiotemporal evolution was characterized through two particle correlations between atoms in each pair of spin states, which revealed dramatic differences between the dynamics of the spin correlations and those of the spin populations. \nFinally, we demonstrate the remarkable influence of linear Zeeman term on non-equilibrium dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that contrary to prior understanding magnetic field gradient actually suppresses the tendency of spin 0 state to separate into spin +/-1 state. This reconciles the Bogoliubov discrepancies and leads to a dramatic sharpening of the transition point, resulting in a resolution at the 1 Hz level. Our results point to the use of dynamics, rather than equilibrium quantities for high precision measurements of phase transitions in quantum gases.

Explorations of Magnetic Phases in F = 1 87Rb Spinor Condensates

Jennie Guzman

Spinor Bose Einstein condensates have widely been sought after as perfect emulators of condensed matter phenomena, providing widely tunable and highly controlled systems. Utilizing a novel spin sensitive phase contrast imaging technique, the vector magnetization is measured in-situ with high spatial and temporal resolution and applied to a number of experiments. Using optically trapped F = 1 87Rb spinor condensates, the equilibrium phase diagram of a spin-1 Bose gas is quantitatively explored by observing the evolution of unmagnetized spin textures and their thermal equilibrium properties. Spin domain coarsening and a strong dependence of the spin configuration on the quadratic Zeeman shift is observed, supporting the predicted mean-field equilibrium phase diagram for small values of the quadratic shift. Additionally, spinor Bose gases are demonstrated to be an effective tool in calibrating and characterizing experimental imaging systems. Sinusoidal test patterns of varying pitch are created and used to extract the modulation transfer function and quantify optical aberrations which are of immense importance in systems which claim to have high spatial resolution. Lastly we realize an optical kagome geometry in a two-dimensional optical superlattice with a scalar Bose gases. The optical superlattice can be tuned between various geometries, including kagome, one-dimensional stripe, and decorated triangular lattice. Using atom optics we characterize the various geometries and demonstrate the versatility of this optical superlattice. The kagome geometry presents a new experimental arena for studies of geometrically frustrated systems.

Emergence and scaling of spin turbulence in quenched antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Seji Kang, Sang Won Seo, Joon Hyun Kim +1 more

We investigate the phase-transition dynamics of a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate from the easy-axis polar phase to the easy-plane polar phase, which is initiated by suddenly changing the sign of the quadratic Zeeman energy $q$. We observe the emergence and decay of spin turbulence and the formation of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in the quenched condensate. The characteristic time and length scales of the turbulence generation dynamics are proportional to ${|q|}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}$ as inherited from the dynamic instability of the initial state. In the evolution of the spin turbulence, spin-wave excitations develop from large to small length scales, suggesting a direct energy cascade, and the spin population for the axial polar domains exhibit a nonexponential decay. The final equilibrated condensate contains HQVs, and the number is found to increase and saturate with increasing $|q|$. Our results demonstrate the time-space scaling properties of the phase-transition dynamics near the critical point and the peculiarities of the spin-turbulence state of the antiferromagnetic spinor condensate.

Ferromagnetic phase transition in spinor Bose gases

Qiang Gu

The achievement in cooling alkali atomic gases, such as $^{87}$Rb, $^{23}$Na and $^{7}$Li, to quantum degeneracy opens up a way to study magnetism in spinor bosons, because these constituent atoms usually have a hyperfine spin degree of freedom. This article reviews several basic problems related to the ferromagnetic phase transition in spinor atomic Bose gases from a theoretical perspective. After a brief discussion on various possible origins of the ferromagnetic interaction, the phase diagram of the ferromagnetically coupled spinor bosons is investigated. It is found that the ferromagnetic transition occurs always above Bose-Einstein condensation and the Bose condensate is fully polarized. The low-lying collective excitations of the spinor condensate, including spin and density modes, are discussed. The spectrum of the density mode is of the Bogliubov form and the spin wave spectrum has a $k^2$-formed dispersion relation at long wavelengths. The spin-wave stiffness coefficient contains contribut
