Infinitely Many Constrained Inequalities for the von Neumann Entropy

Abstract

We exhibit infinitely many new, constrained inequalities for the von Neumann entropy, and show that they are independent of each other and the known inequalities obeyed by the von Neumann entropy (basically strong subadditivity). The new inequalities were proved originally by Makarychevfor the Shannon entropy, using properties of probability distributions. Our approach extends the proof of the inequalities to the quantum domain, and includes their independence for the quantum and also the classical cases.

A simple proof of the strong subadditivity inequality

Michael A. Nielsen, Dnes Petz

Arguably the deepest fact known about the von~Neumann entropy, the strong subadditivity inequality is a potent hammer in the quantum information theorist's toolkit. This short tutorial describes a simple proof of strong subadditivity due to Petz [Rep. on Math. Phys. \textbf{23} (1), 57--65 (1986)]. It assumes only knowledge of elementary linear algebra and quantum mechanics.

The structure of Rényi entropic inequalities

Noah Linden, Milán Mosonyi, Andreas Winter

We investigate the universal inequalities relating the α -Rényi entropies of the marginals of a multi-partite quantum state. This is in analogy to the same question for the Shannon and von Neumann entropies ( α =1), which are known to satisfy several non-trivial inequalities such as strong subadditivity. Somewhat surprisingly, we find for 0< α <1 that the only inequality is non-negativity: in other words, any collection of non-negative numbers assigned to the non-empty subsets of n parties can be arbitrarily well approximated by the α -entropies of the 2 n −1 marginals of a quantum state. For α >1, we show analogously that there are no non-trivial homogeneous (in particular, no linear) inequalities. On the other hand, it is known that there are further, nonlinear and indeed non-homogeneous, inequalities delimiting the α -entropies of a general quantum state. Finally, we also treat the case of Rényi entropies restricted to classical states (i.e. probability distributions), which, in addition to non-negativity, are also subject to monotonicity. For α ≠0,1, we show that this is the only other homogeneous relation.

Remainder terms for some quantum entropy inequalities

Eric A. Carlen, Élliott H. Lieb

We consider three von Neumann entropy inequalities: subadditivity; Pinsker's inequality for relative entropy; and the monotonicity of relative entropy. For these we state conditions for equality, and we prove some new error bounds away from equality, including an improved version of Pinsker's inequality.

Quantum Entropy Prover

Shao‐Lun Huang, Tobias Rippchen, Mario Berta

Information inequalities govern the ultimate limitations in information theory and as such play a pivotal role in characterizing what values the entropy of multipartite states can take. Proving an information inequality, however, quickly becomes arduous when the number of involved parties increases. For classical systems, [Yeung, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory (1997)] proposed a framework to prove Shannon-type inequalities via linear programming. Here, we derive an analogous framework for quantum systems, based on the strong sub-additivity and weak monotonicity inequalities for the von-Neumann entropy. Importantly, this also allows us to handle constrained inequalities, which - in the classical case - served as a crucial tool in proving the existence of non-standard, so-called non-Shannon-type inequalities [Zhang & Yeung, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory (1998)]. Our main contribution is the Python package qITIP, for which we present the theory and demonstrate its capabilities with several illustrative examples.
