Numerical Simulations of the Ising model on the Union Jack lattice (JPA paper)

Abstract

This paper reviews the work of Wu and Lin on the Union Jack lattice Ising model. This model is of interest as it one of the few to display re-entrant phase transitions. Specifically we re-examine their result for the general anisotropic sublattice magnetisations, comparing these with the works of Vaks, Larkin and Ovchinnikov, and our own numerical simulations. We discuss the disagreements found in both sublattice predictions including non-zero antiferromagnetic results and a rotational variance. We will then suggest additional conditions and modified formulae that will allow valid results to be produced.

Numerical Simulations of the Ising Model on the Union Jack Lattice

Vincent A. Mellor, Katrina Hibberd

The Ising model is famous model for magnetic substances in Statistical Physics, and has been greatly studied in many forms. It was solved in one-dimension by Ernst Ising in 1925 and in two-dimensions without an external magnetic field by Lars Onsager in 1944. In this thesis we look at the anisotropic Ising model on the Union Jack lattice. This lattice is one of the few exactly solvable models which exhibits a re-entrant phase transition and so is of great interest. Initially we cover the history of the Ising model and some possible applications outside the traditional magnetic substances. Background theory will be presented before briefly discussing the calculations for the one-dimensional and two-dimensional models. After this we will focus on the Union Jack lattice and specifically the work of Wu and Lin in their 1987 paper "Ising model on the Union Jack lattice as a free fermion model." [WL87]. Next we will develop a mean field prediction for the Union Jack lattice after first discussing mean field theory for other lattices. Finally we will present the results of numerical simulations. These simulations will be performed using a Monte Carlo method, specifically the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, to simulate a Markov chain. Initially we calibrate our simulation program using the triangular lattice, before going on to run simulations for Ferromagnetic, Antiferromagnetic and Metamagnetic systems on the Union Jack lattice

Ising model on the union jack lattice as a free fermion model

Fa Yueh Wu, Ken‐Yu Lin

It is shown that the Ising model on the union jack lattice with general anisotropic and staggered interactions is equivalent to a free fermion model, and from this equivalence explicit expressions for its free energy and a sublattice spontaneous magnetisation are obtained.

FREE-FERMION APPROXIMATE SOLUSION OF THE ISING MODEL ON UNION JACK LATTICE

WANG FU-GAO, HU JIA-ZHEN, 上海交通大学应用物理系凝聚态物理研究所,上海200030

In this paper, the Ising model with two-body anisotropic interactions and three-body interactions on union Jack lattice is solved by free-fermion approximation. We have obtained its free energy, spontaneous magnetisation and the equation of critical points. When the interaction coefficients are simplified as in a square lattice Ising model, the same solusion as Onsager's is obtained.

Spontaneous magnetisations of the Ising model on the bathroom tile lattice

R. J. Baxter, T. C. Choy

The authors evaluate the site spontaneous magnetisations on the general 4-8 or bathroom tile lattice using mappings to checkerboard, free-fermion and Union Jack Ising models. Their results verify the conjecture of Lin et al (1987), who proposed their formula from twelfth-order low-temperature series expansions.

Spontaneous magnetization of the three-spin Ising model on the Union Jack lattice

Fa Yueh Wu

The spontaneous magnetization of the Ising model with pure three-spin interactions on a Union Jack lattice is obtained in terms of the magnetic and the ferroelectric orderings of the eight-vertex model. Magnetizations of the two sublattices are found to possess different critical exponents.

Mixed-spin Ising model on the union jack lattice

Adam Lipowski, Tomoya Horiguchi

We show that the mixed-spin Ising model on the union jack lattice with S= 1/2 and S=1 spin operators placed on different sublattices is equivalent to the eight-vertex model. On a two-dimensional manifold in a parameter space, the model corresponds to the symmetric eight-vertex model and thus is solvable. We locate exactly a coexistence surface between two ordered phases of the mixed-spin model. This surface is bounded by a bicritical line with continuously changing exponents.
